The increasing use of virtual global teams and their implications for global leadership are discussed as are strategies to launch and maintain a successful global virtual team. The seminar ends with a discussion of an increasingly necessary skill in global careers: the management of geographically dispersed global teams. STRATEGY & CORPORATE GROWTH March 7, 2013 The Trillion-Dollar R&D Fix NEW October 9–10, 2013 (two-day seminar) Creating Value Through Mergers & Acquisitions NEW November 14, 2013 Building Competitive Advantage Through Strategy Anne Marie Knott, PhD Professor of Strategy, Olin Business School, Washington University A recent Harvard Business Review article, “The Trillion-Dollar R&D Fix” argues that the problem with innovation today is that firms are flying blindly with respect to their R&D. They don’t know how to measure R&D effectiveness and accordingly resort to rules of thumb when setting their R&D budgets. A new measure, firms’ Research Quotient (RQ), changes that. RQ is a universal, uniform and reliable measure of R&D effectiveness that allows firms to gauge how good they are absolutely (and relative to rivals). It also offers guidance on how to improve RQ, but the most immediate benefit of the measure is that it identifies the optimal R&D budgets for firms. The article shows that if just the top 20 U.S. firms got their budgets right last year, it would have created $1 trillion in market value. This seminar will describe firm RQ, its measurement and its link to optimal R&D and market value and present results from a recent National Science Foundation study to identify the factors underpinning firm RQ.
