a crucial and challenging feature for English language learners learning as a second language Native English speakers frequently utilize phrasal verbs However, they have been discovered to be challenging to master for second language learners Phrasal verbs have also been a cause of frustration for English learners Many students express their dissatisfaction with the challenges they have while utilizing phrasal verbs The topic of how to learn Phrasal Verbs is still hotly debated There is no prescribed or pre-programmed approach for a learner to acquire all of the phrasal verbs, nouns, adjectives, and idioms Because phrasal verbs have figurative meanings, when one of the components that make up the Phrasal Verb changes, the meaning usually changes as well It is difficult for the student to use them correctly As a result, pupils must be encouraged to learn them thoroughly From my vantage point, I see that 12th-grade students at Nguyen Xuan On High School, as well as other Vietnamese students, face significant challenges in learning and practicing Phrasal verbs Due to a lack of professional expertise and adequate learning methods, they frequently become confused when translating and employing Phrasal verbs As a result of the foregoing, I've come up with the concept of conducting an investigation into these issues and offering more approaches to help better the current situation Hopefully, the study, titled "Suggested ways and approaches to stimulate learning phrasal verbs for 12th graders at Nguyen Xuan On High School" may be of some help to people who have struggled with or become bored with learning phrasal verbs in the near future Aim of the study The goal of the Phrasal Verbs experimental study is to determine a basic understanding of Phrasal Verbs and other related topics My graduation paper's specific goals are as follows: - Getting a base on Phrasal Verbs and presenting it - Studied on learning Phrasal verbs of 12th graders at Nguyen Xuan On High School and found out they encountered difficulties in learning Phrasal verbs - Another purpose of this research is to recommend some more effective and acceptable ways for first-year English majors to reduce boredom and increase enthusiasm for Phrasal Verbs - Because it is not their native tongue, the most difficult component of a language for second language learners is grammar Phrasal Verbs are a difficult subject for students to grasp I wish my research paper had been a source of beneficial and practical reference material on Phrasal Verbs to assist 12th graders at Nguyen Xuan On High School in minimizing tediousness and problems and achieving higher achievements in their studies Scope of the study Phrasal Verbs are widely regarded as one of the most difficult subjects for English learners to master, requiring a significant amount of time and effort to research In addition, there is a wealth of information on phrasal verbs Due to the study's limited scope, it focuses mostly on learning conditions and effective approaches for reducing current challenges in learning phrasal verbs And the study's main subjects are aimed mostly at Nguyen Xuan On High School's 12th graders Methods In order to fully grasp all of the study's objectives, I used the following procedures in my research: - Researching and gathering information from reference books, the internet, and the experiences of other researchers - Interviewing and administering survey questionnaires for 12th graders at Nguyen Xuan On High School, with the goal of discovering their learning attitudes and challenges Design of the study A table of contents with page numbers makes it very easy for readers to acquire a clear overview of the research report It also makes it easier and faster for readers to find the information they require This paper is divided into three sections: - Part I: The Introduction includes: Rationale, Aim, Scope, Design, And Methodology Of The Study - Part II: The Development are three chapters: Chapter 1: is the presentation of Background Theory Which Provides Readers The Basic Knowledge Of “ Phrasal Verbs” Chapter 2: consists of Set of the survey questionnaire - gives the situation analysis, subjects, and data collection instrument Data Analysis- show the detailed results of the survey and make a comprehensive analysis of the collected data Findings and discussions Chapter 3: gives suggested methods and techniques for 12th graders at Nguyen Xuan On High School to learn phrasal verbs effectively - Part III: The Conclusion presents an overview of the study, suggestions for further research, and limitations of the study PART II: DEVELOPMENT CHAPTER I: THEORETICAL BACKGROUND: OVERVIEW OF PHRASAL VERBS Presentation Learning new vocabulary is one of the most difficult aspects of learning English in the current day, and one of the most difficult portions of the new vocabulary is phrasal verbs Phrasal verbs are made up of two or three words: verbs, adverbs, and prepositions Some phrasal verbs have obvious meanings, such as "sit down," which means "to sit." They have a very different meaning in everyday life than the word-forming the phrasal verb, such as “make out” to understand something or “draw a plan.” The reason for this is that some phrasal verbs have an idiomatic meaning, which is commonly defined as "the meaning of the complex unit does not result from the simple arrangement of its elements." ( Arnaud & Savigon, 1997, p.161) English learners preferred one-word formulations to phrasal verbs substantially more than native English speakers This is understandable given that learning Phrasal Verbs is more difficult than learning single words due to their idiomatic meaning Because of the conceptual problems of figurative phrasal verbs, learners picked fewer figurative phrasal verbs on a multiple-choice test than literal phrasal verbs Finally, idiomatic phrasal verbs may be more difficult to learn than transparent phrasal verbs As a result, we need to devote more time to researching phrasal verbs and reviewing current phrasal verb learning techniques Why Should You Learn Phrasal Verbs? Use Phrasal Verbs to be a Fluent English Speaker It's a never-ending battle to get kids to memorize the terms with phrasal verbs The truth is that phrasal verbs are extremely difficult to master According to Schneider (2004; 229), particle verbs in English have a unique historical and sociolinguistic significance However, English learners cannot neglect Phrasal Verbs since “many academics have stated the relevance of multiword expressiveness to achieve fluency in language learning” (Wood, 2004, Folse, 2002) To begin with, with the growing influence of the English language, phrasal verbs are becoming more dominant Because they are so common in everyday spoken and informal written language, they are extremely crucial for learners Learning phrasal verbs is essential for understanding, speaking, reading, and writing perfect English There are currently about 5,000 phrasal verbs in use, with many of them appearing in both written (songs, articles, essays, novels, tests, etc.) and spoken forms As a result, phrasal verbs are fairly prevalent, and they're a great way to appear more natural and approachable when speaking informal English Mastering phrasal verbs is a must if you want to improve your speaking skills Learners will need to know not only the most prevalent phrasal verbs but also how to utilize them as native speakers Of course, knowing the formal synonyms for those phrasal verbs won't hurt, but why attempt to sound smart by using them when speaking with friends and coworkers? Listen to some natural English speakers conversing with one another, and you'll notice that the majority of the action words they employ are phrasal verbs! Example: Now I'll give you two versions of the same conversation so you can see how the end result differs depending on whether you use formal English or phrasal verbs First of all – a normal, friendly conversation packed with phrasal verbs - Hi, how are you John, what were you up to during the weekend? - Hello Matt, I’m great, thanks for asking! I made up with Emma and she moved back in on Saturday night! - Really? That’s cool man! Great to hear things are looking up for you again! Now, I'll repeat the dialogue, but this time I'll replace the phrasal verbs with more formal vocabulary, such as those taught in school as part of the Standard English curriculum - Hi, how are you John, what were you doing during the weekend? - Hello Matt, I’m great, thanks for asking! I resolved the argument with Emma and she relocated into my apartment again on Saturday night! - Really? That’s cool man! Great to hear things have started to improve for you again! Do you notice the distinction now? While the second version of the dialogue is still in standard English, it sounds more official, takes a little longer to convey the same information, and isn't as friendly as the first! Second, thanks to the proliferation of good phrasal verb books and websites, learning them has become much easier A large number of phrasal verbs are much easier to master than their formal equivalents It's because combining a single verb with different particles can create entirely new phrasal verbs with distinct meanings As a result, rather than memorizing new words, you memorize new word combinations, which is unquestionably easier Take three words for example: - to postpone - to put off - to extinguish - to put out - to reconcile oneself with - to put up with Definition of Phrasal Verbs : “The term phrasal verb is the combination of two or three words from different grammatical categories – a verb and a particle, such as an adverb or a preposition – to form a single semantic unit on a lexical or syntactic level Examples: turn down, run into, sit up There are tens of thousands of them, and they are in every day, constant use These semantic units cannot be understood based upon the meanings of the individual parts alone but must be taken as a whole In other words, the meaning is noncompositional and thus unpredictable Phrasal verbs that include a preposition are known as prepositional verbs and phrasal verbs that include a particle are also known as particle verbs Additional alternative terms for phrasal verbs are compound verb, verb-adverb combination, verb-particle construction, two-part word/verb or three-part word/verb (depending on the number of particles), and multiword verb Phrasal verbs are differentiated from other classifications of multi-word verbs and free combinations by criteria based on idiomaticity, replacement by a single-word verb, whquestion formation, and particle movement” ( according to Wikipedia ) Example: 10 + Hangman game: When a player is given an unknown set of Phrasal Verbs, he or she must predict the Phrasal Verbs by one character For example: Your goal is to figure out the two-word phrasal verb that means "getting interested in " If you choose incorrectly, one of your body parts will be hung: + Crossword game: is a really popular game This crossword is intended to test and review phrasal verbs from a single topic: (in a tale, film, paragraph, etc.) Before doing the crossword, you should read or review this article This game is beneficial since it allows you to quickly grasp all of the Phrasal verbs you've learned 43 10 11 12 13 Clue: Across I have to take _ of my little brother If you across a good dictionary Buy it for me I don't want to cook Let's _ out Let's _ up the tent before it rains Don't to me you rude boy 11 If you into Jack, tell him to call me 12 _ up! Instead of memorizing a single phrasal verb, practice and memorize a phrase that includes it! Rather than memorizing just "to pass around," study the entire phrase "to pass test papers around." You'll be able to employ phrasal verbs in real English discussions if you memorize them this way If, on the other hand, you just memorize the exact phrasal verbs, you may find it difficult to use them in conversation - When choosing which phrasal verbs to learn, start with the ones that are most regularly used It is generally more important to focus on quality rather than quantity when learning English Anyone has active and passive vocabularies, as you can see Your active English vocabulary is made up of all the words you can use while speaking, whereas your passive English vocabulary is made up of all the terms you recognize but can't use when speaking While knowing the meanings of a large number of phrasal verbs is certainly beneficial, you can only add a certain number of phrasal verbs to your active vocabulary in a given amount of time As a result, it is critical to identify the most frequently used ones and begin employing them when speaking English! - When looking for phrasal verbs in a dictionary, keep in mind that they typically have many meanings Examine the context of the sentence where the phrasal verb first appeared You might be able to discern the meaning in the dictionary you need based on the situation 49 - Learning phrasal verbs with a common context and subject: food phrasal verbs, money, business, etc This will help to emphasize the phrases' usage Students are more likely to recall a few phrasal verbs connected to dating subjects, such as going out, asking someone out, turning someone down, and so on, than if the phrasal verbs they learn are unrelated VII Tips students should avoid when learning Phrasal verbs - Students should not be given long lists of phrasal verbs When there are 45 to learn in one session, it's impossible to draw any connections between their unique meanings and the real world Keep your to-do lists brief and sweet - While there are numerous English textbooks dedicated to phrasal verbs, there is no compelling reason to own one You don't need to overload your mind with phrasal verbs all at once since you'll just start mixing them up! Of course, having one for reference is always a good idea, but I recommend using freely available online resources instead - Don't try to memorize every phrasal verb's meaning; one is sufficient, to begin with Once you're certain you'll recall the first, move on to the other definitions - When writing phrasal verbs into your pocket dictionary, don't translate them into your language! To describe them, use other English words! You won't be able to get out of the translation mode when speaking English if you acquire new phrasal verbs in your original language It occurs when you first construct a sentence in your native tongue in your thoughts before translating it into English This suggestion applies to learning any new English words, so after you've mastered the basics, you should stop referring to your native tongue as a source of information You may always explain a new phrasal verb using very simple, fundamental English words, which will help you think in English more easily, which is essential for your English fluency For instance, one of the phrasal verbs you're studying is "to keep up." Write it down as part of the phrase "keep up with me" in your dictionary, then explain it in plain English — whether walking or doing something, to stay at the same level as me Advice: If you follow these guidelines and master at least a dozen of the most regularly used English phrasal verbs, you will notice a considerable improvement in your English skills 50 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TEACHERS As English teachers, we all know how difficult it is to create a classroom with a student-centered teaching environment and have students participate actively in class Students anticipate practically everything from the instructor, yet there are some things we can to address these issues, such as: - First of all, choosing a communicative approach as our teaching method - Recognizing that using outdated ways in the language is merely a temporary solution - Stretching this strategy as needed to make the session more fascinating for the pupils Because the lesson can capture the students' attention, they will be engaged in your lessons and will learn more and more successfully - Choosing to teach the most commonly used phrasal verbs in daily life If possible, we might include synonym phrasal verbs for the verbs as well as examples of when and how these phrasal verbs are utilized in context - Choosing phrasal verbs based on how frequently they are used When pupils repeatedly encounter a term with a phrasal, the word becomes more important for them to learn - Using phrasal verbs in our explanations of other verbs to demonstrate that they are frequently employed in everyday life Alternatively, if possible, forcing them to listen to English news and demonstrate how and when they are used - Using them in their papers and discussions to focus the students convincingly - Making the students independent as they are adults, maybe advanced learners Group work, making speeches and writing sessions, letting them hear and see how and how often the native speaker uses phrasal verbs 51 PART III: CONCLUSION The Study's Overview Learning vocabulary in particular is important Phrasal verbs are a difficult skill for students to master They face numerous challenges in acquiring Phrasal verbs, as well as a thorough understanding of the relevance of Phrasal verbs The researcher conducted the study in the hopes of discovering some common issues that students face when learning Phrasal verbs and finding a solution to help them learn better The research is divided into three sections The first part of the graduation paper is the introduction It gives the readers the fundamentals of the topic Part II, which consists of four chapters, is dedicated to the elaboration of the topic The first chapter provides a general review of the theoretical foundations on which this research is based They include Phrasal verb definitions, types of Phrasal verbs, and common grammatical errors The method used in the thesis is described in the following chapter This chapter covers the data gathering and data analysis procedures used in this topic Findings were based on survey questionnaires intended for 12th graders and data analysis methods In the final chapter, the learner is given ways and approaches for making Phrasal verbs easier to learn There are tips for pupils as well as teacher recommendations Limitations And Suggestions For Further Study Limitations are an unavoidable part of any research study No exceptions were made in the study - Because the poll only included a small number of students, it cannot accurately reflect the true situation of learning Phrasal verbs at Nguyen Xuan On Hogh Nonetheless, it is hoped that the findings and debates will provide some important information - Because the study only discovered some key obstacles that 12 th graders face in learning Phrasal verbs, more research on diverse subjects is needed - The techniques suggested in this study have been limited, the next study should be more focused on seeking better methods for students‟ learning Phrasal verbs 52 REFERENCE Acklam, Richard, 1992 Help with Phrasal Verbs Oxford: A Division of Heinemann Publishers ( Oxford) Ltd Allsop, Jake.1990 Test your Phrasal Verbs London: Penguin Books LtdAmer, Aly Anwar 2002 Advanced vocabulary Instruction in EFL The Internet TESL Journal, Vol III, No 11, November Brown, Ronan 2004 Review of Really Learn 100 Phrasal Verbs [ Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2002.] Flower, John 1993 Phrasal Verbs Organizer London: Commercial Color Press Macmillan Publishing CO, INC 1964 The Key to English: Two-Word Verbs New York: Macmillan Publishing CO, INC McCarthy, Michael 2003 Vocabulary Oxford: Oxford University Press Lavingtonton, Sandra J 1983 Communicative Competence: Theory and Classroom Practice United State of America: Addison – Wesley Publishing Company 53 APPENDIX I.SURVEY QUESTIONAIRE How are Phrasal verbs important for your English?
