REASON FOR TEACHING EXPERIENCE
The neccessity of applying Wordwall in teaching idioms and phrasal verbs
Countries worldwide have been battling the invisible threat of COVID-19, a dangerous disease that poses significant risks to human life In response to its rapid spread, many nations implemented lockdowns, closing malls, supermarkets, stadiums, theaters, and educational institutions As a result, there has been a substantial increase in the use of technology, with various ICT tools such as applications, websites, YouTube channels, and webinars becoming essential during the pandemic Teachers have adapted by creating lessons and uploading teaching materials to school websites, while students utilize platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams to participate in online classes This crisis has led to an increase in webinars, allowing students to explore various subjects and make productive use of their time One particularly effective tool for enhancing student motivation and learning is the application Wordwall, which supports more engaging educational experiences.
English is a global language essential for communication and learning Integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into teaching methodologies is crucial for enhancing educational strategies Tools like Kahoot, Quizizz, and Wordwall have proven effective in teaching English recently Technology plays a significant role in education, which is vital for societal development and nation-building Recognizing the importance of education, many governments have incorporated ICT into their curricula in the 21st century These modern methods foster higher-order thinking skills and are essential in classrooms, improving the overall quality of education for both teachers and students.
Learning idioms and phrasal verbs is crucial for grade 12 students, as they frequently appear in entrance test papers Mastery of these expressions is essential, as they often appear in reading passages, potentially hindering comprehension and performance.
To achieve high scores in final exams for the GCSE certificate and secure a spot in universities, students must develop a strong understanding of idioms and phrasal verbs, as these elements frequently appear in separate questions.
This experience aims to highlight the positive impact of Wordwall's activities on students' learning, particularly in understanding idioms and phrasal verbs Key benefits include increased student engagement, enhanced language acquisition, and improved logical thinking skills Additionally, these activities significantly contribute to better performance on national examination test papers.
Some difficulties of teaching and learning idioms and phrasal verbs for the
Phrasal verbs and idioms present significant challenges for EFL learners in secondary schools, as their meanings often differ greatly from the individual words Many high school students struggle to effectively use these expressions in communication and find related questions difficult to answer To gain insight into the challenges faced by both teachers and students regarding the teaching and learning of idioms and phrasal verbs, the author conducted interviews focused on 12th-grade students.
Teaching phrasal verbs and idioms poses significant challenges, as contextualization greatly enhances students' ability to understand their meanings There is no structured method for learning these expressions; instead, extensive reading and listening are crucial for mastery (Al-Sibai, 2003) According to Cornell (1985), phrasal verbs and idioms are vital for effective communication with native speakers, as they frequently appear in spoken and informal written contexts However, EFL learners often struggle with these expressions, leading them to avoid using them altogether.
Phrasal verbs and idioms are crucial for vocabulary acquisition, making them essential for EFL students aiming for fluency in English However, many EFL learners often overlook these linguistic elements, avoiding their use in both everyday conversation and academic contexts Additionally, phrasal verbs and idioms present significant challenges for both learners and teachers in ES/EFL environments, highlighting the need for greater focus on these complex areas of the language.
To enhance communication and improve students' exam performance, it is essential to adopt effective teaching methods that minimize frustration and foster understanding of phrasal verbs and idioms Consequently, the Wordwall app emerges as a valuable tool for teaching these language elements more effectively.
In my teaching experience, I recommend using Wordwall as an effective tool to enhance the understanding and usage of phrasal verbs and idioms among 12th-grade students This method aims to improve their proficiency in English by engaging them in interactive learning activities that focus on these essential language components.
However, this study can‟t be perfect in limited time Therefore, I hope that the colleagues‟ contribution will make it more perfect.
THE INNOVATION OF THE TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Over the past decade, the rapid evolution of Information Technology has transformed the operations of IT companies and revolutionized English Language Teaching (ELT) This technological advancement has introduced innovative teaching models, allowing educators to enhance classroom activities and improve the English learning experience Mastering the English language, particularly idioms and phrasal verbs, requires significant effort; however, information technology provides a robust educational framework that enables learners to engage with the language in novel ways To maximize the benefits of technology, learners should integrate it into their study routines, while teachers must demonstrate its effective use to support the curriculum, ultimately fostering improved language skills.
The Wordwall application is an excellent choice for developing engaging learning media, offering features like open the box, random wheel, flip tiles, matching games, and quiz shows that captivate students across all educational levels, from early childhood to higher education This is especially beneficial for 12th-grade students, who often feel overwhelmed by their workload By utilizing Wordwall, educators can create dynamic and interesting lessons that motivate students to enhance their exam preparation and overall learning experience.
The integration of Wordwall applications in the teaching and learning process has garnered significant interest from educators and teachers globally In Vietnam, however, the full potential of these applications remains underutilized.
The use of Wordwall in teaching idioms and phrasal verbs is gaining traction, especially in mountainous regions where resources are limited This application has proven to be an effective tool for enhancing learner engagement and motivation in language acquisition, as well as fostering logical thinking As the complexity of language learning increases, promoting deep learning becomes essential Consequently, the integration of Wordwall in idioms and phrasal verbs lessons for 12th graders is increasingly facilitating the learning process.

3 The importance of Wordwall on learning process
The integration of Information Technology in English language education is increasingly popular, with Wordwall emerging as a powerful and effective tool that positively impacts the learning process for students.
Information technologies have significantly impacted education, particularly in distance learning, by transforming it into an innovative experience The demand for new technologies in the teaching and learning process is rapidly increasing, as the information age fosters knowledge discovery, communication, and exploration These technologies enhance knowledge sharing globally, providing teachers and students with up-to-date information essential for effective education As Haag (1998) notes, information technologies are tools that ensure the right individuals receive the right information at the right time This empowers students to make informed decisions regarding their studies, learning environments, and resources, while facilitating collaborative and interactive learning experiences through effective communication and idea exchange.
Practical background
Thanh Chuong 3 High School, situated in the mountainous region of Nghe An province, serves students from over 10 communes, many of whom are from ethnic minority backgrounds and come from economically disadvantaged families The unfamiliar environment of the new school often leads to feelings of shyness and a lack of self-confidence among these students.
Many students face the challenge of living far from their schools, leading them to rent nearby accommodations to facilitate their studies Additionally, the majority of these students are equipped with new smart devices to enhance their learning experience.
Many children have access to smartphones, but their busy parents often struggle to manage their screen time effectively After school, students typically have plenty of free time, which they frequently spend playing games, chatting with friends, using social media, or watching movies on their phones Some even visit internet cafes to engage in high-speed online gaming Despite having this leisure time, many students, particularly those in the 12th grade, often arrive at school unprepared, neglecting to review lessons or complete assignments.
Parents prioritize their children's education despite various challenges, recognizing the significance of learning English, which benefits teachers Many educators at my school are dedicated to innovating traditional teaching methods to enhance English instruction Engaging students in English learning presents a considerable challenge, as they often lack confidence in their language skills and struggle with vocabulary, grammar, and other essential competencies This leads to poor exam performance, particularly among 12th graders, who also possess limited background knowledge While students understand the importance of English, they find it difficult to learn effectively without their teachers' guidance and appropriate teaching aids.
During my experience teaching English to classes 12D2, 12A3, 12B, and 12D5, I observed that many students excessively use electronic devices, often bringing smartphones to class for gaming and chatting To combat this distraction, it is essential for teachers to engage students through creative and interactive activities Utilizing tools like Wordwall has proven effective in motivating students and enhancing their learning experience By continuously innovating lesson plans, teachers can maintain student interest in English, leading to improved academic performance.
Innovative teaching methods capture students' attention and lead to improved academic performance, resulting in higher exam scores.
At Thanh Chuong 3 High School, the exceptional leadership of the headmaster and vice-headmasters has led to continuous upgrades in teaching and learning facilities, fostering an optimal environment for student development, particularly in English education The school's library offers a vast array of learning materials and resources, while all classrooms are equipped with smart TVs and computers, enhancing the overall educational experience.
14 wireless network, which is convenient for all of the teachers and students As a result, teaching and learning English in the school is becoming better and better
To enhance exam performance for 12th-grade students, utilizing Wordwall for teaching idioms and phrasal verbs has proven to be an effective method for learning English This versatile app can be implemented in both online and offline classes, making it an ideal tool for assigning tasks to students.
To enhance my students' exam results, I conducted a classroom action research focused on utilizing Wordwall for teaching idioms and phrasal verbs This innovative approach led to positive changes in my students' learning outcomes, highlighting the importance of finding effective solutions in my teaching experience.
The primary textbook utilized in this study was the old version of Tieng Anh 12, which follows a systematic, cyclical, and theme-based curriculum approved by the Ministry of Education and Training The curriculum comprises 16 units, each centered on skill development in five areas: reading, speaking, listening, writing, and language focus However, during the Covid-19 pandemic, teachers shifted their emphasis towards reviewing grammatical points to better prepare students This article highlights the effective use of Wordwall in teaching idioms and phrasal verbs during the Covid-19 epidemic.
I applying Wordwall to teach students about idioms and phrasal verbs in 4 classes: 12A3, 12B, 12D2 and 12D5 at Thanh Chuong 3 High School (a mountainous school with low level in English) in school year 2021 -2022
The following statistics at my classes when I did not apply Wordwall to teach idioms and phrasal verbs:
(Figure 1: The results of learning English before applying Wordwall)
The table presents the results of idioms and phrasal verbs testing for classes 12A3, 12B, 12D2, and 12D5, revealing that a significant number of students struggle to recall these concepts effectively Only a small percentage, less than 10%, of students excel in these tests, while over 50% are classified as normal or low achievers This lack of proficiency, particularly in challenging topics like idioms, often leads to student disengagement and poor performance in final exams Therefore, incorporating Wordwall into the curriculum offers a promising approach to enhance student motivation and engagement with idioms and phrasal verbs.

FINDINGS AND EVALUATION
The results of pre – test and post- test
- This result is counted after 4 classes had taken the test before and after applying
Class Pre - test Post - test Increase (+)
(Figure 2: Test results of students in 4 classes)
The data presented in the table indicates a notable reduction in the number of students with low grades, alongside a significant rise in those achieving higher scores Each of the four classes demonstrated substantial progress in their test results, with an average increase of 2.0 points per class.
The implementation of Wordwall in English classes significantly improved student performance, as evidenced by test scores Initially, students averaged only 3.25 points, but after using Wordwall, the average post-test score rose to 5.4 This notable increase indicates a substantial enhancement in the speaking proficiency of participants, reflecting the effectiveness of Wordwall as a teaching tool.
The test results analysis
Having applied Wordwall to teach phrasal verbs and idioms for the 12 th graders,
In the 2021-2022 school year, I conducted surveys and tests among students from four classes at Thanh Chuong 3 High School These assessments were carried out multiple times across various settings, including both online and offline formats, utilizing platforms such as Messenger and class pages The results of my research are summarized as follows:
(Figure 3: the results of learning english in 4 classes after applying Wordwall)
(Comparison: The results after applying some techniques are better and better (as the table above)
The academic performance of students has shown significant improvement, particularly in class 12D5 Initially, only 1 student, representing 2.4%, achieved a high score However, after implementing Wordwall for teaching idioms and phrasal verbs, the number of high-achieving students increased to 7, accounting for 17% of the class.
45 the students of class 12B can get a lot of progress (50% quite students) The result is also better and better in other classes
During the 2021-2022 school year, I utilized Wordwall to teach idioms and phrasal verbs, yielding positive results among students The implementation of this tool significantly enhanced the quality of classroom learning, leading to a higher proportion of strong students Furthermore, students had the opportunity to integrate essential communicative skills, such as speaking and reading, while also enriching their vocabulary and boosting their confidence in communication.
Comparisons between pre – survey questionaires and post – survey questionaires
Before implementing Wordwall for teaching idioms and phrasal verbs, a pre-survey questionnaire was distributed to students Following the use of Wordwall, a post-survey was conducted to assess any changes in student responses.
I conducted a survey with 40 students across four classes, analyzing their responses from both pre-survey and post-survey questionnaires The comparison of these results reveals notable changes in the students' perspectives and understanding.
Questions Very much Much Little Not at all
1 Do you feel that idioms and phrasal verbs are difficult for you?
2 Do you find idioms and phrasal verbs are interesting?
3 Do you like Wordwall application?
4 Do you want to take part in Wordwall activities in the next lessons?
(Figure 4: Pre - survey questionaire and Post – survey questionaire with 40 students in 4 classes)
It can be clearly seen that all of the students in the survey have much more positive change in learning idioms and phrasal verbs with Wordwall
Question 1 investigated students‟ opinions about the difficulty of learning idioms and phrasal verbs to get high marks in the test before applying Wordwall in their lessons No students found them easy to remember the idioms and phrasal verbs in their lessons However, there were significant changes in the number of students who found it less difficult It seems that Wordwall simplified the task, so students can perform them more effectively
The objective of Question 2 is to investigate students' preferences for idioms and phrasal verbs used in traditional lessons and assessments The findings reveal a significant shift in students' attitudes towards these language elements before and after the implementation of Wordwall at two research sites Notably, there was a marked increase in the number of students expressing high interest in the activities, contrasting sharply with those who previously showed minimal interest Data indicates that students found traditional lessons monotonous; however, after engaging with Wordwall, all students recognized the value of idioms and phrasal verbs, resulting in a substantial rise in their enthusiasm for these tasks Consequently, it can be concluded that students demonstrated a stronger preference for the interactive Wordwall activities.
Question 3 was designed to discover the participants‟ interest in learning Idioms and phrasal verbs with Wordwall The students in 4 classes appeared not to enjoy working in traditional organized by handouts with teachers and blackboard Howerver, learning idioms and phrasal verbs with Wordwall were so highly appreciated by most of them The considerable increase in the number of the students enjoy Wordwall activities suggests that they were much more stimulating than traditional ones
Question 4 examines the attitude of students about applying Wordwall in the next lessons before and after using it It is clearly seen that at the 40 students in 4 classes are eagerly to learn more there was a significant growth in the percentage of students who highly participated in Wordwall activities and a downward trend in the number of students who did not Students with low agreement on applying Wordwall in the next lessons dropped considerably whereas students who actively took part in the lessons increased remarkably These facts can draw the conclusion of the effectiveness of Wordwall activities on enhancing students‟ participation
In a nutshell, these figures can draw the conclusion of the effectiveness of applying Wordwall to teach idioms and phrasal verbs It not only improves students‟
Adopting positive attitudes toward learning English in the classroom and completing homework can significantly enhance student-teacher interactions This approach not only improves students' efficiency in final assessments but also fosters the development of essential skills.
