Notes for parents and caregivers Talking about ideas is a hugely important part of learning, and this book provides a rich basis for conversation with your child Each picture is a combination of excitingly different places to visit, and characters that become increasingly familiar though the pages Children will also benefit from finding animals and spotting amusing happenings on their own Discovering the joy of an absorbing book is a wonderful and important part of learning to read To get the most out of this book: • Talk about the pages together, encouraging your child to use interesting words to describe the different scenes • Talk about looking for the animals along the top of each page, perhaps taking a page each to search Touch each animal as you count them • Describe where each animal is using words such as behind, in front of, between, etc Discuss the colors and patterns you can see • Play I-spy Can you find an animal whose name begins with an “s”? • Encourage your child to think about what it would be like to be in each place You could ask, “What would you hear on the farm?” • Look at the pictures and discuss what the animals and children might be thinking Make up stories about what is going on Penny Coltman Educational Consultant Let’s meet the characters!
