is very important in learning languages It not only helps us speak accurately, hear one’s speech sound easily but also helps us to understand what people say However, many students are confused and they don’t know how to pronounce some phonemes correctly in the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) because they don’t understand what phonemic transcription is They don’t know when letter A is pronounced as sound / ei /, / æ /, / a: /, / eə / Eg: / ei / Late / æ / Glad / a: / Park / eə / Care And how differently consonant sounds /s/ and /z/ are pronounced [Every speech sound must be identified as one of the phonemes and written with the appropriate symbol.]1 In reality, I notice that 24 consonant sounds are introduced briefly in the textbook of English 11 with a short period of limited time and most of the students in Mai Anh Tuan High School are not familiar with the phonemic transcription From the reasons mentioned above, I have decided to write my own experience initiative on the topic: “HELPING THE GRADE 11 STUDENTS IN MAI ANH TUAN HIGH SCHOOL TO PRONOUNCE ENGLISH CONSONATS CORRECTLY” with a effective way Aims of the research The goal of this research is to investigate whether the teaching with the IPA will help students overcome the difficulties in pronouncing the phonemes correctly Therefore, the researcher’s first objectives are to find out the difficulties his/ her students are facing, and how much the new method helps improve their pronunciation With this experience initiative, I wish to help my students pronounce the 24 consonant sounds correctly and understand more about the phonemic transcription Besides, through this experience initiative, I hope to contribute some ideas on issues related to phonology to the teaching experience sources for my colleagues to use as a reference in their teaching English In this page: - Section I [1] – I consult English phonetics and Phonology – A practical course, by Peter Roach, Second edition, Cambridge University Press, word for word; I myself write the rest Experience Initiative 2022 School-year: 2021- - I myself write contents in Sections II Objectives and Scope of the research In this experience initiative, I give a basic chart of phonemic symbols of the vowels, giving some pictures to present how each sound to be pronouced to help students understand easily and practise them with more exercises The topic was studied in the English programme at high school level (The basic English textbook 11) It is applied to the grade -11 students at Mai Anh Tuan High School in the school-year 2021-2022 to help them pronounce words correctly when they learn new words and the “pronunciation part” well in the tests and examinations The methodology of the research In the process of doing the study, I used several methods: a Interviews In this study, interviewing was used to obtain ideas and information from students about the IPA they learned at lower secondary school b Analysis and comparison - After each lesson, I analyze the students’ work and compare with the previous result to find out what students have achieved and what is their weakness PART II: PROBLEM SOLVING Bases of the research The experience inititative has been based on my own practical teaching experiences, observing other teachers’lessons, and consulting my colleagues I think the best way to help students improve their pronunciation skills is to encourage them to practise speaking English as much as they possibly can Real situation before applying methods in teaching the pronunciation of consonats Through surveys of many colleagues and students, and through teaching practice, I found that students who learn English at lower secondary schools almost have not learned about the IPA basically Most students learn to pronounce a word by memorizing the teacher’s pronunciation When I show a phonetic transcription of a word and ask the students to pronounce it, they cannot it They can not also recognize which phoneme is long or short Experience Initiative 2022 School-year: 2021- Below are the results of the study before being applied to teach the ways of pronunciation and some rules of phonemic transcription of English language in the classes 11D, 11H and 11M at Mai Anh Tuan High School in the school-year 20212022 + Before applying Number Number of students Number of students give to pronounce consonant sounds of my students Measures are taken during the English hours according to curriculum and the extra hour tutoring sessions assigned in the afternoon by the school Measures taken 3.1 Introduction: I introduce the 24 consonant sounds in the IPA with one picture for each sound and the way how to pronounce each phoneme and then these sounds are presented by native speakers
