sheets and consent forms for the school participant INFORMATION FOR THE PARTICIPATING SCHOOL Date: Dear Head of the School/ Teaching Staff I am Nguyen Thi Bao Trang, teacher of English at your school, currently a PhD student at School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies, Victoria University of Wellington (VUW), New Zealand I am undertaking research which leads to a PhD thesis at School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies, VUW The study will explore how task-based language teaching is used in Vietnamese high school contexts, which will hold enormous values for EFL teaching and learning at high school level in Vietnam The research will also be practically beneficial for Vietnamese EFL teachers and learners, task, textbook, and material designers, and teacher educators This study will provide insights into pedagogical decisions that teachers can make to improve learners’ task performance The Victoria University Human Ethics Committee has granted ethics approval for this study I, therefore, would like to invite your school to participate in this research project With your agreement, I will collect data from October to December, 2010 I will observe repeatedly a number of teachers of English based on their voluntary participation For each teacher, I will observe one of his or her classes for a four-week period The observed classes will be audio and video recorded by means of a camera placed at the back corner of the class and the teacher wearing a small digital recorder on his or her neck Some volunteer groups of students will be audio recorded by a digital recorder put on their table The teachers and some students will also be invited to participate in subsequent (stimulated recall) interview sessions at the end at any arranged time and place that best suit them The interview sessions are supposed to take place from 30-60 minutes each The observations and interviews will be the data sources for this research The data the participants of your school supply will be kept confidential and the real names of your school, teachers and students will not be used and identified in any way in the research Pseudonyms will be used, instead Access to data will be in restriction to the researcher, and her supervisors The data will be used as part of the written report of the researcher’s PhD thesis and it is intended that they will be presented at academic journals or conferences or at the oral defence as a requirement of a PhD at Victoria University of Wellington A copy of the researcher’s PhD thesis will be deposited at the Library of the
