Thu Dau Mot City, 12th January 2022 (Examiner’s signature and full name) Dr Nguyễn Kim Loan THE SOCIALIST REPUBLIC OF VIET NAM Independence - Freedom - Happiness M.A THESIS COMMENTS AND EVALUATION Research title: Speech Acts in Email Communication for international relations at Thu Dau Mot University Candidate: Nguyen Hoang Mai Phuong Supervisor: Dr Nguyen Thi Thanh Tam Examiner: Le Thi Thanh, PhD Role: Second Examiner COMMENTS Study significance, scientific and practical implications This thesis starts with a specific aim at identifying types of Illocutionary Acts and their functions employed in emails of the Office of International Affairs (OIA) at Thu Dau Mot University (TDMU) With that objective the researcher made an investigation into 35 English outgoing emails from January 2018 to October 2021 of OIA, TDMU to clarify how Representatives, Directives, Commissives, and Expressives are mainly used with 28 functions for communication Despite the business mission and the permission granted from TDMU and OIA, that kind of investigation might raise the issue of Information Privacy and Confidentiality Moreover, many statements in the background to the study should be modified or adjusted as they tend to bias the contributions of this study as noted on page “If people who work in the field of international relations not know clearly about Speech Acts or the knowledge of Speech Acts, particularly how Speech Acts perform and how to use Speech Acts, they may misunderstanding the partners’ intended meanings through sentences and cannot use Speech Acts effectively to convey their intentions to the partners as well.” And later, “That will lead to not being able to build a good relationship with partners Moreover, misunderstanding is one of the main reasons for disruption in relationships In TDMU, until now, the study on Speech Acts in emails, especially with foreign partners in international relations has not been conducted yet In consequence, the researcher decides to conduct a study on Speech Acts employed in email messages of OIA in TDMU.” Mai Phuong should avoid making exaggeration of the functions of Speech Act that can be recognized in many parts later About the Introduction and Literature Review of the thesis: With the Introduction the candidate could provide readers with the amount of workload in communication of the international relation aspect of TMDU That means she could provide readers with concrete background of the study with number of mail exchanges in OIA at TDMU In Literature Review, the candidate was able to cite the sources of statements to make the study scientifically based Mai Phuong could cite Yule’s (1996) and Paltridge’s (2006) for theories of Pragmatics studies in relation to the context and functions of Speech Act Mai Phuong could apply Searle’s (1976) Speech Act categories and previous studies to design the theoretical framework for her study However, Mai Phuong may need to analyze some more major studies on Speech Act in emails to highlight the gap to identify the necessity of conducting research on expression of appreciation in a separate part It is obvious the author already personally concluded the findings of the study in the significance of the study in terms of theory and practice Moreover, Chapter does not indicate the discussion of relevant theories about advantages and disadvantages of mails Instead, it simply lists ideas, and the coherence and cohesion within different sections are not well established Research methodology Chapter needs rewriting to properly describe sampling 35 mails chosen from 62 English email messages from January 2018 to October 2021 The researcher just described how she collected those English emails without citing her reason, “Reading and observing English emails carefully and applying the purposive sampling technique, the researcher identifies and selects 35 English emails to analyze.” (p.36) Structure and format of the paper In general, the thesis contains all necessary components of an MA thesis The content in each chapter is appropriately presented The candidate has proved her competence in reaching her goal of study with linguistic and ELT significance and implications The study was presented in the conventional format of an MA thesis with chapters and the required content included in each section However, there is no consistency in format, citations and idea organization that turns the thesis into serious format errors Research findings and contributions Chapter is the longest one from page 39 to page 94 The candidate presented the results and discussion in forms of tables, pie charts and bar charts that illustrate the data for analysis and synthesis The data should have been recorded anonymous by data codes to avoid the violation of privacy When discussing the results, the candidate was able to confirm the pedagogical implications teaching and learning English language She could also point out the limitations of the study in terms of scope and study method which is a good issue in the last chapter because at least that part did not reveal the candidate’s overconfidence as in Chapter However, there was no usage of the observation method as mentioned for the qualitative approach Suggestions for research improvement The Abstract, the Acknowledgements, and the Statement of Originality include the basic information but language use should be carefully checked to be formally presented There is a mismatch between the title of the thesis (Speech Acts) and the content of the research (Illocutionary Acts) that needs modification 3.Many mistakes and errors grammar or sentence structures distort the meanings of many sentences: For Section 2.1.2.1, Definition of Speech Act, “As for Chailka (1994:153), Speech Acts as “the ways people use language to manage the social interaction This definition indicates clearly the function of Speech Acts in interpersonal communication It means words not only represent their literal meaning, but also various things in various situations based on people’s communication purposes.” 4.When we have the same footnotes at one page we not need to repeat the same sources by using the word “ibid” General evaluation and scoring Despite the unavoidable shortcomings, the thesis has proved the candidate efforts in reviewing related literature, examining the Speech Act in the emails International Office to identify the linguistic items The study needs modifications to better represent the candidate’s passion in research At this stage I would like to congratulate Mai Phuong for completing the thesis and presenting it in the oral defense this morning Thu Dau Mot City, 12 January 2022 Le Thi Thanh, PhD ... responsible for
