ABSTRACT Nowadays, English is an important medium of international communication with over a quarter of the world speaking this language We cannot deny the importance of this global language especially in this internationalization Because of this reason, learning foreign languages has become more and more vital to Vietnamese students Learning English or any other foreign language, the four most essential skills are listening skills, speaking skills, reading skills and writing skills These four skills are very closely related Besides, for an English learner, English oral presentation skills are important that cannot be ignored and you need to spend a lot of time on them To evaluate as well as clarify the importance of English oral speaking skills, here is a study, going into researching some factors that affect the English oral presentation skills of sophomore English majors at Thuongmai University and offer some special solutions To achieve the aim of the study, the researcher applied one tool: the questionnaire with 50 participants According to the questionnaire, the following results were reached: Identifying three main factors affecting English oral presentation skills of English Faculty’s students and some difficulties which students are facing and giving recommendations to help students become more professional in English oral presentation has been and is having a significant impact on all aspects of our country It can be said that "Globalization is both an opportunity and a challenge for Vietnam" On that momentum, our country is also actively improving the level of human resources, especially foreign language skills in order to meet and make the most of the requirements and benefits that globalization brings Most countries around the world are using English as a second language, after the mother tongue to communicate and exchange information in industries, fields, etc Currently, Vietnamese education is also focusing on the English language, and most of us are exposed to English from elementary school, and many colleges and universities require English certificate which is a condition to graduate You cannot deny the importance of English to students, future generations of the country To learn a foreign language well, listening, speaking, reading and writing are the most important skills In addition, the English oral presentation skills are also considered an important skill, not only in school, but also at work in the future To meet the social innovation as well as the increasing demand for education, changing and innovating learning methods is becoming more and more urgent Instead of just working hard and reading and learning the basic knowledge of the book according to a motif, you are also focusing on the problem of practicing soft skills such as speaking and giving presentations It can be said that presentations are an integral component of communication skills Certainly, most students know clearly about the role and importance of presentation skills among other soft skills Presentation is a fairly popular activity From the time you were in lower grade, you were familiar with presentation through storytelling lessons Later entering the college environment, the university presentations became closer because of the discussion or working groups, etc You use presentations to persuade others, express personal opinions Later when you have to go to work, you realize that without the presentation skills you cannot persuade employers to choose you among other candidates Without good presentation skills you cannot persuade your colleagues as well as expressing your views towards superiors clearly and decisively You also can not create a relationship with people without knowing how to connect with them verbally or expressly by acts In enterprises, presentation is the means to present business projects, financial plans, etc Not an individual will spend his or her time just listening to you reread the numbers, the reports as well as projects You need to know how to turn those dry, available words that anyone can read into words full of emotion and soul in order to make the most impact on listeners Not everyone has good presentation skills In the fact that Vietnamese students in general and second year students of Thuongmai university in particular, most or more people have many difficulties and obstacles in the English presentation process However, the practice as well as improving the ability to present, not one day or two can be better immediately, but need to go through the process My purpose when studying the of English oral presentation skills is hoping to partly find out the difficulties that affect the English oral presentation skills as well as provide specific solutions to partly solve those difficulties 1.2 Previous studies Regarding presentation skills issues, there are many foreign as well as Vietnamese researchers choose it as the matter of concern Before getting up to study, an investigation of factors affecting the English oral presentation skills of second-year English majors at Thuongmai University, the below are some reviews of a few related studies 1.2.1 Studies abroad The thesis with the topic “Factors that influence oral presentations of engineering students of Pakistan for workplace Environment” by Inayatullah Kakepoto, Hadina Habil, Noor Abidah Mohd Omar, Hamdan Said (2012), this research results provided valuable insights on factors that influenced effective oral presentation performance of engineering students The findings are presented in percentages on the basis of assessors’ agreement and disagreement for the factors that influenced oral presentation performance of engineering students Presentation skills, confidence and nervousness are three factors which influence effective oral presentation performance of engineering students This study also suggested some solutions to deal with this problem to help students overcome oral presentation barriers during study time “The role of communication skills in learning and using the second languages” by Musolas Alsubaie (May, 2017) is the second study the writer wants to mention to everyone You might think the reason why the writer is researching presentation skills but showing some studies about communication skills You can say that communication skill and presentation skills are closely related Most people believe that presentation skills are the component of communication skills And indeed, they are related This study was to investigate how individuals learning a second language communicate As you can see, acquiring a new language requires us to grasp and learn listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary skills This is not easy This study shows that even though communication skills are important for individuals to interact and communicate, educators of second language learners rarely include communication skills in the curriculum The lack of the knowledge of communication skills and the influence of communication skills on learners illustrate the importance of conducting this study, showing some important communication skills So you need to develop communication skills alongside grammar and vocabulary to enhance the development of second language proficiency 1.2.2 Studies in Vietnam The study “Factors affecting the students’ English oral presentation skills at Hanoi Tourism College (HTC)” by Hoang Thi Mai Hoa (September, 2011) is one of some studies in Vietnam the researcher wants to review to you The research aims specifically at exploring the factors affecting tour guide students’ oral presentation skills at HTC Possible solutions are recommended to help the teachers and students to improve the teaching and learning of oral presentation skills The study also pointed out the factors that influence HTC students' presentation skills Students’ language proficiency and Teachers’ roles are two factors affecting the students’ oral presentations The researcher was also quite impressed with the study “A study on how to make an effective presentation for the fourth-year English majors at Haiphong private university” by Nguyen Huong Thom (2010) This study shows how to make effective presentations for the fourth-year English majors and gives students techniques to make better ones Moreover, this study also reveals difficulties faced by the students when they make a presentation and gives out solutions for difficulties and tips for an effective presentation You can find a lot of studies on presentation skills and some other topics related to it Some studies the writer mentioned above will help widen knowledge of presentation skills, as well as help answer a few questions to be able to complete the research better Each school has a different educational method, with different learning methods So is the TMU Because the major of the students of the English Faculty is the business English major, sometimes the factors affecting English presentation skills also have a few differences After this research, the writer hopes people will have a better understanding of the factors that affect English presentation skill as well as find solutions for themselves, especially for second- year English majors 1.3 Aims of the study The study is done with the following aims: First and foremost, some difficulties of English presentation will be figured out in this study Then, it is important to point out some main factors affecting English oral presentation skills, after that it is need to propose some recommendations to deal with these problems and create the best effect in English learning for second- year students of English Faculty Finally, the researcher hopes this study will be very valuable for second- year students English Faculty at Thuongmai University in perfecting English oral presentation skills 1.4 Scope of the study The scope of the study is factors affecting English oral presentation skills of second-year students of English Faculty at Thuongmai University This study is conducted in the second semester in the 2020-2021 academic year 1.5 Research methodology Based on the rationale and the aims of the study, the subject of this research is “Factors affecting English oral presentation skills of second-year English majors at Thuongmai University” 10 Chart 9: Before each English presentation, preparing time for practicing To have a good presentation, the preparation of presentations is also one of the elements that affect our English oral presentation skills Chart helps you to assess students' preparation for the time of the content and slides You can remember quickly, but you cannot remember for a long time Practice a lot will help you to form reflexes as well as remember more deeply the content of the topic 52% show that 26 out of 50 students selected as a presentation template usually prepare for practice 3-5 days before the presentation date, 38% are preparing days in advance, 10% is an option to prepare only the night before, because it can quickly remember and there are people who not have the time to prepare You identify the difficulties you are facing in our presentation skills, identify the important factors that directly affect presentation skills So what should you to improve your English oral presentation skills and help you have great presentations? The following solutions are given to help students improve English oral presentation skills of second- year English majors that the writer has already suggested These are solutions identified by students and selected that they feel suitable for their own improvement roadmap Chart 10: How to improve English oral presentation skills Everyone believes that improving speaking skills, expanding vocabulary, mastering grammar structures, and spending a lot of time on presentation practice are the priority ways to improve presentation skills In addition, preparing the presentation content selectively and PowerPoint carefully, noting eye- contact and using body language are also effective solutions You can combine reading newspapers, English books, or listening to many English songs to improve listening skills and practice listening reflexes In addition to suggestions for solutions to improve listening skills that were already proposed, during the survey, there were also some opinions of the surveyed people suggesting that maybe Watch Ted Talks to learn from professional public speakers and watch and learn from public speakers to improve 32 3.3 Conclusion This chapter presents findings which researcher collected data for the study The results of the research are transferred portion and showed by some charts Through the paper, the researcher received the two main points: Some factors affecting English oral presentation skills of the students and the strategies to improving English oral presentation skills Moreover, it also easy to realize some common difficulties when presenting in English which second- year English majors often meet Through this chapter you can clearly perceive some factors affecting the presentation skills of students today, especially for second- year English majors at TMU Through research results, it can be said that it is Human factor that determines a lot, greatly affecting the results of our presentations A student who speaks well, listens well or even if a good knowledge as well as realizes the importance of improving her presentation skills will give them a good presentation result On the contrary, if they cannot grasp some common difficulties of their own presentation, they cannot improve their own shortcomings It can be seen that you are professional in Vietnamese presentation but you are not sure that you can be better when presenting in English Therefore, you always need to try and practice well to be able to overcome the difficulties as well as promote your own strengths Students of The English Faculty at TMU have chosen appropriate learning methods and selected professional communication environments to deal with weak English listening and speaking skill Based on all the findings that are presented and discussed in this chapter, some suggestion for the improving English communication reflex skill to the students at English faculty at TMU will be provided in the following chapter 33 CHAPTER 4: RECOMMENDATIONS AND SUGGESTIONS Recognizing some difficulties as well as clearly analyzing main factors affecting the English oral presentation skills of second-year English majors at Thuongmai University, you need to propose some special solutions to help you improve English oral presentation skills 4.1 For Students Firstly, improving English listening skills, English speaking skills This is one of the important ways which can help you become a professional presenter To improve them well, you firstly should expand your vocabulary and enhance English communication reflex skills Nowadays, information technology becomes more prevalent in modern societies The young people usually use some social networks such as Facebook, Zalo, Twister, Instagram, etc to talk and update information about big events in the world and share their feelings The students can also use this app to learn and improve their English communication reflex skill and expanding vocabulary No one can deny the importance of vocabulary when learning any language, especially in English To have a successful conversation, you need to have a large amount of suitable vocabulary It is compulsory for the learners to enrich your vocabulary regularly if you want to get better in English skills such as Listening, Speaking or communicating There are many sources that help students learn vocabulary such as the Internet, books, TV shows even from their friends You can put a suitable target to and complete it daily If you can maintain this habit for a long time, you can get better Besides, you not forget mastering grammar structure Speaking skills and listening skills play an important role in communication You have more exciting ways to improve listening skills such as: listening to many English songs, English Talk shows, English websites, English applications, etc Taking part in using English activities frequently is an effective way for the students who are looking for a professional environment to communicate and learn experiences from other people There are many activities that use English such as conferences, English clubs, part-time jobs that require English or interacting with foreigners at tourist destinations Regularly contacting the English environment will improve using English ability Practice is the best way to improve your English learners' speaking abilities 34 Secondly, having a thorough grasp the content of the presentation Before going into preparing to make a presentation, you need to choose a leader that your group trusts the most to lead the group to complete the presentation as perfectly as possible Then together learn about the topic of the group, set outline the content of the lesson Please evaluate carefully your teammates and divide tasks accordingly, set deadlines and follow everyone closely It will be possible to create great team work results You should prepare the content of the presentation selectively: The fact that you always feel that all information is important, it is also necessary to put in, you "cannot" discard the information that you have been working hard on searching for This will lead to thinning of our presentations You won't be able to present all 60- 80 pages of documents for a ten- minute presentation Therefore, you can arrange information by the important level of the presentation topic It will help you easily remove less important information and spend time presenting selected information You certainly will be assigned a presentation at some point This is unavoidable during four years of university When assigned as a speaker in the group or you must to present about the content you learned You have to understand the content information and learn about other issues surrounding the assigned content Doing this will help you speak confidently as well as help you answer questions asked by listeners after your presentation One tip that helps you to ease the stress when making a presentation is to treat the presentation like sharing and talking with friends, which helps to reduce the pressure that might be present during the presentation Thirdly, preparing your PowerPoint carefully and taking a lot of time to have the best speaking It can be said that PowerPoint also plays an important role in presentations Can you be 100% sure that your audience understands the content that you are and will be presenting? Not definitely PowerPoint will help you present the main points as well as animate your presentation, help you attract more eyes from your audience A short, vivid, concise slide is of course better than a boring multi-word slide So if you can take a little more time to design a PowerPoint, it maximizes your presentation 35 2-3 days before the presentation day, prepare carefully for practicing speaking to ensure fluency as well as coherence Nobody wants to spend time just listening to uh, ah or take the time to wait for you to remember If you feel that 2-3 days isn't enough, try to spend as much time as you can to make sure you are ready for this presentation Fourthly, improving your voice and body language When giving a presentation, you are the representative to present and raise the with better blood circulation and limit your stress Fifthly, being the one more self- confident to actively engage and interact with the listener Most of the mentality of people going to a presentation will fall into a passive state It can lead to one-way interaction and be less effective in the message that we want to convey during the session presentation To overcome this, consider starting with a poll or survey Don’t be put off by unexpected questions - instead, see them as an opportunity to give the audience what they want Your presentation will become more and more lively and interesting as you create more interaction with people around In addition to interacting with body language, asking questions and answering questions can also help create a lively atmosphere You try asking questions with your listeners or asking them to ask you which they have wondered with your presentation This will help you to score in the eyes of teachers as well as other classmates You will be judged as a good listener with professional presentation skills 36 To become a professional presenter, you would need to be someone who is very self- confident, believe you can well Then you can use your best state to make presentations or express your personal opinions So you can convince others You also need to determine the purpose of that presentation for yourself You should identify the main points that you would like your listeners to grasp when leaving (This is a good way to emphasize important content in the presentation) In addition, let's build the outline for the presentation in the most logical way, determine the duration for each part of the presentation This is very important, because the mentality of listeners is that they not want to listen to a speech that is too long, no matter how attractive it may be Especially, if teachers set a time regulation, you must know how to allocate the time It makes sense to have time to delve into the most important part Finally, preparing proper clothes Choosing a suitable outfit will contribute to attracting more listeners If you are a student talking about your personal opinion, choosing a dynamic T-shirt is wonderful Costumes will make you more confident and make a first impression on the listener They not know what you will say, but with a well-dressed style, there will be points from other lecturers and students The most important is improving some skills related to presentation skills such as speaking skills, listening skills These are essential skills that we need to cultivate If you can improve those skills, your oral English presentation skills will also be improved You can spend time listening to English music songs, reading English newspapers, watching English talk shows, etc Moreover, you need to expand vocabulary, mastering grammar structure 4.2 For teachers Teachers should raise students’ awareness of the importance of English oral presentation skills Some students not have proper awareness of the importance of English oral presentation skills Giving examples to demonstrate the importance of this skill is necessary In addition, teachers should create motivation in English for the students by some activities in class such as giving a topic for the students and discussing together, playing some small games related to English Teachers should also use the opportunity to praise learners for getting something right, doing something 37 well, trying hard, and showing a positive attitude towards learning Teachers can timely edit as soon as there are mistakes in grammar, vocabulary or related skills Moreover, they could suggest some useful websites, some tips to improve some English skills Moreover, they should change their teaching method According to the book about "Project-based Second and Foreign Language Education: Past, Present and Future" by Gulbahar H Beckett and Paul Chamness Miller, published in 2006, the application of classroom learning projects is more effective than traditional teaching methods This is true for many subjects like: math, economics, science and foreign languages Teachers should spend more time in class for discussion so that students can develop soft skills During the discussion, it is still possible to rely on the topics of the lessons to give students time to self-study and go into more depth You need to listen to students, understand students' difficulties in communication and help them overcome Not every teacher can be both a teacher and a friend to his or her students If you can take some time to chat with students, learn about some difficulties that students are facing, you can come up with suitable solutions to help them improve 4.3 For Thuongmai University In order to help learners improve English oral presentation skills, Thuongmai University should improve the English training program at the school Some ways such as renovating the level of ability of class, upgrading and improving the content of the curricula and extracurricular activities and more attractive is the effective way that TMU can apply to improve the student English ability They also should listen and learn, collect students' opinions, understand the difficulties that students are facing, and then come up with suitable solutions Today English is more and more important It has become the second language in the world We are in the process of globalization, so it is very necessary to improve English The university should have more study hours with native teachers, practice English reflex skills as well as other skills of students to help develop your English oral presentation skills The university can organize for student extracurricular sessions, so that students can have a lot of time to talk and practice with each other through small speeches They also create more conditions for English clubs to develop 38 more, helping students become more active and self- confident All of them will help their students be more professional in English oral presentation Hopefully, all these recommendations can be useful for TMU to educate the next high quality generation employees for the countries 39 CONCLUSION This study aimed at identifying, describing, categorizing some factors affecting English oral presentation skill made by 50 second-year English majors of Thuongmai University This study also gave some common difficulties when presenting in English as well as some solutions in order to help them to improve English oral presentation skills You can also realize the importance of improving English oral presentation skills Chapter includes the rationale, previous studies, the aim of study, scope of the study, research methodology and the organization of study in hope that the reader will have an overview on this study Literature review is chapter which provides the basic theory and concepts such as definition and overview of English oral presentation skills, the important roles and common difficulties of English oral presentation skills The important thing was identified and given three main factors and presented everything about them It would help the readers to form the framework to keep research in the next chapters Chapter is to collect and analyze data The writer analyzed 11 questions of the survey questionnaires with the help of 50 second-year English majors at TMU Based on that, the writer discovered common difficulties which students often face up with and gave some suggestions to improve English oral presentation skills shown in chapter It is so clear that presentation is very important, especially English oral presentation in communication Everything that happens in the workplace results from communication Therefore, having good reading, writing, speaking and listening skills are essential if tasks are going to be completed and goals achieved So in this study, the author gives some recommendations to help the learners this Because of limited time and knowledge, mistakes are unavoidable in this study If given the chance, the writer hopes to expand the research subjects That research will study factors affecting English oral presentation skills as well as some common difficulties which English majors are facing and be able to come up with suitable solutions, hoping to help students of English Faculty in time Finally,
