11173030 – Business English 59A CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION This chapter presents background information of the study, the reason and motivation to carry out this research Research questions, methodology and the design of the research are also involved 1.1 Rationale of the study Learning psychology is an extremely effective way to discover what things are actually happening behind any thoughts or activities of human beings, which helps people understand themselves and those around them Psychological knowledge can even endow people an ability to rationally controlling, ignoring, and even overriding their innate instincts, which leads to a more peaceful and happier life Psychological terminologies play a crucial part in understanding any kinds of psychological materials They can shape imaginations about concept, nature and behavior of mentioned objects or phenomena in readers’ reflection Consequently, the role of translating these terms is essential for using, understanding, and working with psychological materials and terms themselves Translating psychological terminologies from source languages into target languages is a process that eventually enables the reader to virtually understand all the ideas of authors, or unintentionally alter the nature of mentioned concepts of terminology Therefore, inappropriate translating perspectives of translators may dangerously mislead readers and cause bad consequences Moreover, professionally translating and using psychological terms in translated versions is essential to prevent readers and researchers from being confused or disoriented by new and unfamiliar terms For that reason, this topic is considered to be vital and necessary for students, translators, teachers, and even researchers to understand the nature of translating English psychological terms into Vietnamese along with unique features of each translation strategy The effort of this research is made to reduce challenges and obstacles when using, studying, translating, and working with these psychological terms The research data is analyzed from psychological articles on Zeally online magazine Zeally online magazine is one of the magazines that possess 10 Đặng Văn Mạnh - 11173030 – Business English 59A perspectives and the most important, master understanding in both English culture and Vietnamese one Obviously, it is not only the responsibility of translators alone when accepting the concept of any psychological terminology, readers have to make an effort to escape from the cultural mind-trap to receive their desiring knowledge as well They should read other translation works from other translators to recognize the differences among the ways of expressing content, constructions of terminology and meaning of psychological words while keeping a neutral attitude toward them without any confirmational bias Cultural difficulties might not be completely solved, but alleviating them is totally feasible with proper effort, and studying more related subjects in English such as Biology, Anatomy, and Philosophy to be immersed in culturally scientific values could be a good solution An excellent collection of well translated psychological terminologies in Vietnamese should be built by translators and readers to help to break through the cultural barricades Furthermore, sufficient psychological vocabulary can bring about many opportunities to explore a new world of the human mind full of surprising discoveries and findings, and readers can eventually realize that they usually take many seemingly normal facts for granted and ignore things that can improve and change their lives 46 Đặng Văn Mạnh - 11173030 – Business English 59A CONCLUSION The conclusion of the study is a summary of the result and meaning of the research, its limitation, and some suggestions for further studies 5.1 Summary of the study The study answered the research questions and accomplished the purposes of discovering the ways that psychological terms are translated into Vietnamese It also indicated what things need to be paid attention to when applying different kinds of terminology translation strategies on each particular type of psychological domain Moreover, the study explicated discussions and reflection on the reason for differences in proportions of each translation strategy applied to translate types of psychological terms Eventually, the study gave translators and readers some suggestions of what needed to be done to improve psychological terminology translation and optimize reading psychological materials Analyzing up to 60 psychological articles in both English and Vietnamese from the Zeally online magazine and their original sources is a sufficient quantity to make the nature of terminology in the field of psychology reveal itself According to the research data, it is concluded that the frequencies in types of psychological terminologies appearing in articles are not equal Although terminological quantity just accounts for a small proportion of the total number of counted words in all articles, it plays a key role in the process of understanding the psychological content Moreover, each psychological domain has its own characteristics that require particular translation strategies Through translation and Equivalent translation are frequently used by translators, and they have their own advantages and difficulties like other terminology translation strategies, which have been discussed previously in chapter Some recommendations are suggested to translators to improve their work and overcome difficulties when encountering psychological terminologies in every domain Furthermore, the research is also inclined to raise awareness of psychological research issues in the Vietnamese community and probably encourage true passion in studying psychology to get its benefits as one of the most leading sciences nowadays 47 Đặng Văn Mạnh - 11173030 – Business English 59A 5.2 The limitation of the study One of the biggest drawbacks of the research is not having sufficient empirical practicing and professional ability to completely distinguish and accurately classify which applied terminology translation strategies belong to which translated terminologies relatively Thus, unprofessional mistakes can be found during the analyzing process that may affect the accuracy of the findings and discussion section Not having enough knowledge and experience in psychological fields can lead to some inaccuracy when precisely recognizing types of psychological terminology The fact that psychological terms can be blended into other fields such as Medical, Sociology, Philosophy and Anatomy can be a hindrance for amateur researchers to accomplish the categorizing process Consequently, it may lead to an impediment from understanding the true nature of psychological terminology and the terminological translation process Besides, due to the shortage and limitation of ability and time, analysis and recommendations are somewhat inadequate, and mistakes during the research are unavoidable 5.3 Recommendation for further studies Further studies should identify and mitigate the limitations of this research to improve their analysis results For a more accurate understanding of the nature of psychological terminology in modern articles, the scope of further research should cover more range of articles from other online magazines platforms Besides, researchers could analyze the ways that psychological terminologies are translated by using other sets of translation methods from many other previous researchers or authors By doing that, researchers can understand the process of terminological translation from other perspectives, which could be analyzed to suggest better recommendations for translators to improve their work Last but not least, researchers of further studies themselves must expand their knowledge in psychological science with updated materials regularly to create more insight research 48 Đặng Văn Mạnh -
