motivation in learning English through the internet?” The collected data from survey questionnaire revealed that there are many different factors which have influence on students‟ motivation to learn. The most common factors were displayed in chart 3 below.

Chart 3: Factors affecting students’ motivation in learning online
It can be clearly seen from chart 3 that the factor which had the greatest influence on students‟ motivation was materials with the rate of 71.2% of the participants. In fact, 37 out of 52 learners in the survey agreed that materials played an important role on their motivation to learn. Some of them added that materials of online courses are more attractive than in class context because they are designed attractively and learners can hear native language, they are not afraid of making mistakes in pronunciation. And on tienganh123, there are other materials to relax when they feel tired with their learning such as listening to songs, watching movies, or reading funny stories, and even playing games in English.
The second important factor affecting learner‟s motivation is testing and assessment. In class context, testing and assessment can be very stressful to students; many of them are frightened of tests. However, in chart 3 it is obviously shown that this is not a pressure for online students. 48.1 % learners reported that testing and assessment on the web motivated them a lot. They did not feel afraid of getting bad marks, but they felt their learning is more effective with the mark from teachers. Especially for young learners, they are eager to get marks because they can improve level in the course.
Ranking third is students‟ background knowledge of English language. There is 34.6% of the sample size agreed to choose this factor. The result may be because

Basic English is the beginning course for learners to learn and review English. The level of difficulty is not much, thus students can understand the explanations, tasks, and language in the course quite well, so they do not really need to have large background knowledge to motivate them to learn.
Finally at the bottom is success in learning, 25% learners agreed that this factor plays an important role in motivating them to learn. This is because when learning online, they cannot see how successful they are. Many still join an offline class to see how improved they had been at the same time with an online course. Hence, for these students if they can combine online classes and offline classes at the same time, they would get better achievement.
All in all, there were many different factors affecting student‟s motivation in learning English online. Among them, the most typical one were the materials, testing and assessment, the students‟ background knowledge of English language and the success of learners. This finding will help the teachers and web developers so much in finding better way to motivate learners to learn.
