Table 4.2: Current Construction students’ and former Construction students’
suggestions for the topics that should be included in future ESP textbook for Construction
Before analyzing the result of Table 4.2, the researcher would like to mention the source of the topics which appeared in the tables above. Those topics were collected from a book titledEnglish for Construction by Evan Frendo, published by Pearson Education Limited in 2012. This book was part of the Pearson Longman Vocational English series. It was designed for students in vocational education and for company employees in training at work. The topics in this book reflected the latest development in the field of construction. Besides, the language in the book was clearly defined, and the lecturers were supported online with notes, fully editable tests and multilingual glossaries.
Table 4.2 demonstrated the agreement and the disagreement for the introduction of the topics in future ESP textbook for Construction if one was to be compiled or written.Firstly, 100% of former students agreed that “Talking about the jobs in the construction industry”, “Describing types of construction”, “Talking about trade materials”, “Giving and understanding instructions for erecting scaffolding”, “Describing how a crane works”, “Talking about mixing cement”,
“Explaining injuries” and “Describing the shape of constructions” were the topics which should be included in future ESP textbook for Construction. In addition, 95%
of them liked the topics “Making conversation on site” and “Discussing projects”.
The topic “Talking about the delivery of heavy equipment” was favoured by both current and former Construction students with the same percentage of 85%.Besides, 90% of former students agreed that topic “Introducing yourself and others” and
“Talking about building materials should be included in future ESP textbook for Construction. The topics “Understanding a house plan”, ”Describing problems on site“ and “Discussing projects“ were agreed by both current and former students with the percentage of 55%. Current Construction students, accounting for 76.6%
liked about the topics “Talking about the jobs in the construction industry” and
“Describing how a crane works”. Moreover, 45% of former students satisfied with the topics “Ordering materials”, “Talking about insulation” and “Checking stock items” to insert in future ESP textbook for Construction while 85% of current students liked the topics “Describing problems on site” and “Ordering materials”. A
very high agreement of current students with 83.3% for being included the topic
“Talking about mixing cement” in future ESP textbook for Construction. The topic
“Giving and understanding instructions for erecting scaffolding” were liked by current students with the agreement percentage of 86.7%. Some topics were agreed with the percentage of 40% of former Construction students such as “Describing trades and the stages of trade training” and “Talking about waste disposal color codes”. Moreover, 75% of both students groups liked the topics “Identifying warning signs” and “Describing the shape of constructions”. The topics “Giving instructions for operating equipment” and ‘Talking about building materials” were agreed by 70% of both groups. A rather high percentage of 50% of current students thought that the topics “Making conversation on site” and “Describing structures using dimension” should be included in future ESP textbook for Construction. There was a great disparity between the agreement of current former students for the topic
“Calculating an area” with the percentage of 56.6% and 15%. However, the topic
“Welcoming clients and explain what staff members do” was agreed with the low percentages of 26.7% and 25%. Besides, “Giving personal information” was liked by 13.3% of current students and “Completing a vehicle safety checklist” was the topic which former students supposed that it should be included in future ESP textbook for Construction with a low percentage of 15%. Former Construction students did not agree with the percentage of 50% for the topic “Describing trades and the stages of trade training”. All students thought that the topic “Giving personal information” and “Welcoming clients and explain what staff members do”
should not be included in future ESP textbook for Construction with the percentage of over 60%.
The result from Table 4.2 suggests that the topics collected from aforementioned book by Evan Frendo was rather suitable for Construction students at HST and they can provide students with the specialized knowledge which students desired to learn.
