Different types of port card and access card for STM-1 are available.
4.4.1. 4 x STM-1 electrical ports 75 Ohm
Connections are established through the connectors J1 - J8 situated on the access modules front coverplate (Figure 24. on page 49).
The modules are inserted into the slot assigned to them and compliancy with the configuration of the port card to connect.
Up to 16 High Speed (HS) electrical port cards (i.e. 155.520 Mbit/s ) can be put on the slots 24 to 39.
For the electrical ports cards the corresponding access cards have to be put on the basic area slots with fixed relations.
The relationship is illustrated in Figure 22. on page 47.
One or more 1+ N (N ≤ 15) EPS revertive protection schemes are applicable;
As regards to the position of the “protecting port card” the following rule must be applied:
- Insert the protecting port card in a slot at the most left of the protected port cards group.
- Insert the special protection access card (HPROT) associated to the protecting port card following the rule reported in Figure 19. on page 43 ( for example if the “protecting port card” has been inserted in slot 24, the “protection access card HPROT” must be inserted in slot 2).
The max. number of EPS groups is 8 (i.e. 8 cards each protected 1+1 not revertive). For each group a HPROT access card is required therefore the max number of HPROT access cards is 8 (see Figure 23. on page 48).

Figure 25. 4 x STM-1 electrical/optical port and access module relationship
• Insert the access module and the port card into the slot assigned to them.
• Wire the STM-1 signals according to the type of connections to be realize (optical or electrical) as follows:
Electrical
Wire the STM-1 utilizing the “Case EMC 1.0/2.3 for 140/155 electrical interface“ (3AL 79428 AAAA) For the cable assembly on the “Case EMC 1.0/2.3 for 140/155 electrical interface“ (3AL 79428 AAAA) read the following instruction (see also Figure 27. on page 53):
- Connect the cables using the male coaxial connectors (C1) and (C2)
- Unsheathe the cables according to the quotes given in Figure 27. detail “A” on page 53 in order to make visible the braid.
- Unscrew the ferrule (1) and insert the connector inside the holder (2); at the end screw the ferrule.
- Close the holders (2) and (3) using the three screws (4). During this phase check that the braid of both cables perfectly touch the holders.
- Insert the “Case EMC 1.0/2.3 for 140/155 electrical interface“ previously assembled onto the module and port card and screw it using the screws (5).
Optical
Insert the single fiber splice connector onto the corresponding one on the module and port card (Input and Output)

4.4.3. SM ặ MM fiber connections
The optical connections described in paragraph 4.4.2 on page 50 6 are added with a patch cord (see Figure 28 on page 54) to mate the STM-1 output of the Single Mode optical module with the Multi-mode fiber connecting the ODF.
Figure 28. Patch cord SM ặ MM
There are two types of path cord:
- 50/125 àmm fiber type, green color P.N. 1AB 18627 0001 - 62.5/125 àmm fiber type, orange color P.N. 1AB 18627 0002
The length of the patch cord is standard set. The patch cords can be connected to modules inserted both in the Traffic unit part (slot 24-39) and in the Access unit (slot 23-9, 13-20).
The joint between the patch cord and the multi-mode fiber leading out from the ODF may be placed in a different position either inside the horizontal duct of the subrack or inside the vertical duct of the rack.
The junction is achieved through a socket and the typical route is shown in Figure 29 on page 55.
The connection points on the STM-1 module correspond to the Tx connector (J2, 4, 6, 8 in Figure 26 on page 52).
