Abstract

BUDDHIST ELEMENTS OF THE NOBLE WOMEN MAUSOLEUMS DURING NGUYỄN PERIOD IN THE SOUTH MAUSOLEUMS DURING NGUYỄN PERIOD IN THE SOUTH

VIETNAM

This text introduces the results of excavations and study the typical

ancient tombs of the noble women during the Nguyễn period of

archaeologists of the University of Social Sciences & Humanities, National University of Ho Chi Minh City, in collaboration with the Museum in the South Vietnam. These tombs were influenced by Buddhism in the architectural decoration and grave gifts. Basing on artefacts assessment results, the author indicated that the compound tombs in the South Vietnam were well preserved and rare in Vietnam; mummification technique dated from the end of the 17th to the 19th century. In particular, the women’s honour was realised through the tombs document such as the planning cemetery where buried parents and worshipped “father” beside “mother”; grave decoration, grave gifts was almost the same. In the opinion of the author, this phenomenon related to the status of women in the family and in society in the South at that time. “The women’s honour in the South Vietnam” was not found in tombs’ document in the North Vietnam and it also was not seen in the Confucius monarchy which lasted for a thousand years. It is considered as a characteristic of the religious activity “Mother worship” in the South Vietnam.
