QUÁN TỪ XÁC ĐỊNH "THE" (MẠO TỪ)
Dựng trước một danh từ đó được xỏc định cụ thể về mặt tớnh chất, đặc điểm, vị trớ hoặc được nhắc đến lần thứ hai trong cõu.
The + danh từ + giới từ + danh từ
x: The girl in blue, the Gulf of Mexico.
Dựng trước những tớnh từ so sỏnh bậc nhất hoặc only.
x: The only way, the best day.
Dựng cho những khoảng thời gian xỏc định (thập niờn): In the 1990s
The + danh từ + đại từ quan hệ + mệnh đề phụ
x: The man /to whom you have just spoken /is the chairman
Trước một danh từ ngụ ý chỉ một vật riờng biệt
x: She is in the (= her) garden
The + danh từ số ớt tượng trưng cho một nhúm thỳ vật hoặc đồ vật
x: The whale = whales (loài cỏ voi), the deep- freeze (thức ăn đụng lạnh)
Lưu ý: Nhưng đối với man khi mang nghĩa
"loài người" tuyệt đối khụng được dựng the.
x: Since man lived on the earth (kể từ khi loài người sinh sống trờn trỏi đất này)
Dựng trước một danh từ số ớt để chỉ một nhúm, một hạng người nhất định trong xó hội.
x: The small shopkeeper: Giới chủ tiệm nhỏ/ The top offcial: Giới quan chức cao cấp
The + adj: Tượng trưng cho một nhúm
người, chỳng khụng bao giờ được phộp ở số nhiều nhưng được xem là cỏc danh từ số nhiều. Do vậy động từ và đại từ đi cựng với chỳng phải ở ngụi thứ 3 số nhiều.
x: The old = The old people/ The unemployed/ The disabled are often very hard in their moving
The + tờn cỏc vựng/ khu vực đó nổi tiếng về mặt địa lý hoặc lịch sử
x: The Sahara (desert)/ The Siberia (tundra)/ The Normandic
The + East/ West/ South/ North + Danh từ used as adjective
x: The North/ South Pole (Bắc/ Nam Cực), The East End of London (Khu đụng Lụn Đụn)
Lưu ý: Nhưng khụng được dựng THE trước cỏc từ này nếu nú đi liền với tờn chõu lục hoặc quốc gia: West Germany, North America...
The + tờn gọi cỏc đội hợp xướng/ dàn nhạc cổ điển/ ban nhạc phổ thụng
x: The Back Choir/ The Philharmonique Philadelphia Orchestra/ The Beatles.
The + tờn gọi cỏc tờ bỏo (khụng tạp chớ)/ tàu biển/ cỏc khinh khớ cầu.
x: The Times/ The Titanic/ The Hindenberg
The + họ một gia đỡnh ở số nhiều = gia đỡnh nhà
x: The Smiths = Mr/ Mrs Smith and children x: Dựng trước tờn họ của một người để xỏc định người đú trong số những người trựng tờn.
Khụng được dựng "the" trước cỏc danh từ chỉ bữa ăn trong ngày trừ cỏc trường hợp đặc biệt.
x: We ate breakfast at 8 am this morning
x: The dinner that you invited me last week were delecious.
Khụng được dựng "the" trước một số danh từ như home, bed, church, court, jail,
prison, hospital, school, class, college, univercity v.v... khi nú đi với cỏc động từ và
giới từ chỉ chuyển động chỉ đi đến đú là mục đớch chớnh hoặc ra khỏi đú cũng vỡ mục đớch chớnh.
x: Students go to school everyday.
x: The patient was released from hospital.
Nhưng nếu đến đú hoặc ra khỏi đú khụng vỡ mục đớch chớnh bắt buộc phải dựng "the".
x: Students go to the school for a class party. x: The doctor left the hospital afterwork
Lưu ý: Trong American English, “Hospital”
và “University” bắt buộc phải dựng với the
x: He was in the hospital (in hospital as a patient)
x: She was unhappy at the University (At University as a student)
*Một số trường hợp đặc biệt: Go to work = Go to the office.
To be at work
To be hard at work (làm việc chăm chỉ)
To be in office (đương nhiệm) <> To be out of office (Đó món nhiệm)
Go to sea = đi biển (như những thủy thủ)
Go to the sea = ra biển, thường để nghỉ
To be at the sea: ở gần biển
To be at sea (ở trờn biển) trong một chuyến hải hành.
go to town: Đi vào trung tõm/ Đi phố - To be in town (ở trung tõm) khi town là của người núi.
