people thought listening could develop by itself Yet it has the reputation of being very important for the enhancement of effective communication This study investigates the listening abilities and practices among the second year students of Faculty of Foreign Languages of the Ho Chi Minh City Open University This study also suggests a way in which student may listen to English for better results This thesis consists of five main parts: the role of listening in our daily life, the review of literature, the common problems as well as the solutions, and a survey questionnaire of 82 students Moreover, the results revealed that (1) the effects of listening on our studies in particular as well as the role of listening skills in daily activities in general;
