James says, “Let’s celebrate the beginning of summer with our new robot friends!” The children all move about the robots as James hands out the gifts Kendra and Mateo look at the happy faces on the children Then they look at each other and smile But wait—the robots are happy, too! They are dancing! What did you to help him or her feel better? 117 Rosetta Stone® Storybook – English (American) Level Unit 20: The Big Park Clean Up It’s an early sunny morning in July and Kendra and Mateo are riding their bicycles to the park to go fishing in the lake But they are in for a big surprise when they arrive Every place Mateo and Kendra look, there is trash on the grass There are cups and bottles floating in the water of the lake The garbage cans are overflowing; trash is pouring out all over the grass floating Yesterday there was a Fourth of July party and the park was full of people There were many people selling food There were games for children to play And at night there were beautiful fireworks over the lake in the middle of the park But today the park is empty, except for all the garbage garbage “This is ugly,” says Kendra “We’ve got to something,” says Mateo “No one can enjoy the park when it looks like this.” “I’ve got an idea,” Kendra says “Why don’t we get our robot friends to help with the clean up?” She reaches into her pocket for her phone An hour later, almost all the students in the robotics team have arrived at the park Each student has brought a robot fireworks Kendra and Mateo have changed into work clothes “As you can see, the park is need of a clean up,” Kendra says “Watch how Mateo’s robot can pick up the trash.” Mateo starts his robot and it begins moving on the grass in a straight line Now it comes to a piece of trash The robot comes to a stop and reaches out with its robot arm and picks it up Then it puts the trash in a trailer that is being pulled behind it After that, the robot starts moving again 118 trailer Rosetta Stone® Storybook – English (American) Level Unit 20: The Big Park Clean Up “How does your robot that?” asks Vlad Mateo is holding a small machine in his hand “I made this sensor and put it on my robot I taught the robot to use the sensor to know when it comes to a piece of trash It knows it isn’t grass or a tree or an animal Then, I wrote a program that tells the robot pick something up if it’s trash.” Now Kendra says, “Mateo has made ten sensors, so we can put one on each of your robots.” “Then our group of robots can work together to clean the park!” says Vlad Kendra says, “And since the robots can’t go in the water, we are going to pick up trash in the lake.” “That’s a good plan,” says Vlad “Let’s get started!” All morning long the students work to put sensors on their robots and program them to clean up a section of the park Then they use some rowboats to pick up the trash floating in the water It is almost noon when a team of city park workers arrives They were planning to clean up the park, but are surprised to see that the robots have done most of their work for them! I have never seen anything like this Where did you come up with this idea?” she asks “I got the idea from a little vacuum cleaner we have at home,” Mateo says “It goes all over the house and it knows when to turn and go back.” handshake The mayor says, “And you all changed all your robots to work like that?
