perpendicular to the face of each veneer Quoin (pronounced “coin”) A corner reinforcing of cut stone or bricks in a masonry wall, usually done for decorative effect R Rabbet A longitudinal groove cut at the edge of a member to receive another member; also called a rebate Radiant barrier A reflective foil placed adjacent to an airspace in roof or wall assemblies as a deterrent to the passage of infrared energy Radiant ceiling panel A ceiling that is heated to serve as a source of heat for the building Radiant floor A floor that is heated to serve as a source of heat for the building Radiant floor, staple-up A radiant floor created by stapling hydronic tubing to the bottom of the subfloor Radiant floor, thin-slab A radiant floor made of hydronic tubing embedded in a cementitious material Radiant panel A ceiling, wall, or floor panel that is heated to serve as a source of heat for the building Radiation The transfer of heat by electromagnetic waves Rafter A framing member that runs up and down the slope of a steep roof Rafter, common A rafter that runs all the way from the outer wall to the ridge of the roof Rafter, hip A rafter that runs along the intersection of two sloping roof planes, usually at an angle of 45 degrees as seen from above Rafter, pattern A carefully laid-out rafter that is traced to mark the cuts for all the other rafters of that type in a roof Rail A horizontal framing piece in a panel door; a handrail Rain cap A covering intended to minimize rainwater penetration of the open top of a chimney flue Rainscreen principle A theory by which wall cladding is made watertight by providing wind-pressurized air chambers behind joints to eliminate air pressure differentials between the outside and the inside that might transport water through the joints Rake The sloping edge of a steep roof Raked joint A mortar joint that has had the mortar scraped out to a significant depth from the outer surface of the wall Rammed-earth construction Wall construction that consists of damp earth compacted into formwork Ray A tubular cell that runs radially in a tree trunk RBM See Reinforced brick masonry Realtor One who acts as an agent to buy and sell buildings on behalf of others Rebar A short expression for steel reinforcing bars in concrete or masonry Receptacle A place where an appliance can be connected to an electric circuit Recycled content The percentage of a product recovered from waste rather than from original sources Reflective coated glass Glass onto which a thin layer of metal or metal oxide has been deposited to reflect light and/or heat Register The outlet into a room for conditioned air from a central heating or cooling system A register is provided with built-in damper vanes that allow some control of air volume Reinforced brick masonry (RBM) Brickwork into which steel bars have been embedded to impart tensile strength to the construction Reinforced concrete Concrete work into which steel bars have been embedded to impart tensile strength to the construction Reinforcing bar Round, mild steel bars used to add tensile strength to concrete construction The bars have ribs or other deformations on their surface to bond mechanically with the concrete Reinforcing tape A wide paper tape used with joint compound to cover seams between gypsum board panels Relative humidity A percentage representing the ratio of the amount of water vapor contained in a mass of air to the amount of water it could contain under the existing conditions of temperature and pressure Relieved back A longitudinal groove or series of grooves cut from the back of a flat wood molding or flooring strip to minimize cupping forces and make the piece easier to fit to a flat surface Remodeling Modifying an existing building Removable glazing panel A framed sheet of glass that can be attached to a window sash to increase its thermal insulating properties Replacement window A window unit designed to install easily in an opening left in a wall by a deteriorated window unit that has been removed Resale value The price for which the owner of a residence can sell it Residential developer A person or business that buys land, legally divides it, and installs improvements to support the construction of houses Resilient clip A springy mounting device for plaster or gypsum board that helps reduce the transmission of sound vibrations through a wall or ceiling Resilient flooring A manufactured sheet or tile flooring made of asphalt, polyvinyl chloride, linoleum, rubber, or other elastic material Resin A natural or synthetic, solid or semisolid organic material of high molecular weight, used in the manufacture of paints, varnishes, and plastics Resistance Opposition to the flow of electricity, measured in ohms Retaining wall A wall that resists horizontal soil pressures at an abrupt change in ground elevation Return-air duct A tube through which air is sucked from an interior space and establishes the level to which concrete or plaster will be placed Screw A fastener with a helical thread, designed to be inserted by twisting with a screwdriver Scribing Marking and cutting the edge of a piece of wood or laminate or the undersurface of a log so that it will fit tightly against an irregular piece or surface adjacent to it Scupper An opening through a parapet through which water can drain over the edge of a flat roof S-DRY, S-GRN Stamped designations on lumber indicating that the piece was surfaced (planed) when dry or when green (unseasoned), respectively Sealant gun A tool for injecting sealant into a joint Sealer A coating used to close the pores in a surface, usually in preparation for the application of a finish coating Seasoning Drying lumber to make it lighter, fill A fill material that tamps itself into the minimum possible volume, such as a gravel made up of small, rounded stones Self-drilling Drills its own hole Self-furring lath Metal lath with dimples that space the lath away from the sheathing behind to allow plaster to penetrate the lath and key to it Self-tapping Creates its own screw threads on the inside of a hole Self-weight The weight of a beam or slab Septic approval Governmental permission to construct a septic system Septic system A collection of components, including septic tank, drain field, and all associated piping, for the purpose of sewage digestion and effluent dispersal Septic tank A large, underground vessel that accepts sewage, digests it by fermentation, and discharges liquid effluent Service entrance The assembly by which electricity is conducted from outdoor lines to the meter base Set To cure; to install; to recess the heads of nails; a punch for recessing the heads of nails Setback A legally required minimum distance between a building and a property boundary Setting bed A thin, wire mesh reinforced concrete slab to which ceramic tile or stone is adhered Setting material The adhesive in which ceramic tile or stone is laid Sewer, building See Building sewer Sewer, municipal An underground pipe that collects sewage from buildings and conducts it to a sewage treatment plant Shading coefficient The ratio of total solar heat passing through a given sheet of glass to that passing through a sheet of clear double-strength glass Shake A shingle split from a block of wood Shale A rock formed from the consolidation of clay or silt Shear A deformation in which planes of material slide with respect to one another Shear panel A wall, floor, or roof surface that acts as a deep beam to help stabilize a building against deformation by lateral forces Shear wall A wall that is engineered to resist lateral forces in a building Sheathing The rough covering applied to the outside of the roof, wall, or floor framing of a light frame structure Sheathing, spaced Boards spaced some distance apart, used as roof sheathing under tiles, wood shakes, or wood shingles Sheathing clip An H-shaped metal fitting used to keep the edges of adjacent sheets of roof sheathing material aligned with one another Shed A building or dormer with a single, sloping roof plane Sheeting A stiff material used to retain the soil around an excavation; a material such as polyethylene in the form of very thin, flexible sheets Sheet metal Flat rolled metal less than ⁄4 inch (6.35 mm) in thickness Shim A thin piece of material placed between two components of a building to adjust their relative positions as they are assembled; to insert shims Shingle A small unit of water-resistant material nailed in overlapping fashion with many other such units to render a wall or sloping roof watertight; to apply shingles Shiplap A board with edges rabbeted so as to overlap flush from one board to the next Shoe A small, flexible wood molding that covers the joint between a baseboard and a finish floor Shop drawings Detailed plans prepared by a fabricator or manufacturer to guide the shop production of such building components as cut stonework, steel or precast concrete framing, curtain wall panels, or cabinetwork Shoring Temporary vertical or sloping supports of steel or timber Short circuit An Single-family detached house The dominant residential type, consisting of one house standing alone on its own lot Single-hung window A window with two overlapping sashes, the lower of which can slide removed The vertical distance between the top of the mold and the top of the slumped mixture is an index of its working consistency Slurry A watery mixture of insoluble materials Smoke chamber The space that lies above the damper of a fireplace and below the flue Smoke shelf The horizontal area behind the damper of a fireplace Sod A thin section of grass and soil that is held together by matted roots Soffit The undersurface of a horizontal element of a building, especially the underside of a stair or a roof overhang Soffit vent An opening under the eave of a roof, used to allow air to flow into the attic or the space below the roof sheathing Soft mud process Making bricks by pressing wet clay into molds Softwood Wood from a coniferous tree Soil, allowable stress of The bearing capacity of soil Soil, amended Earth whose properties have been adjusted with organic matter, fertilizer, lime, and the like, to give it optimum properties for growing a lawn or garden Soil, expansive A soil, usually a clay, that expands greatly when wetted Soil, stability of The ability of soil to retain its engineering properties during the lifetime of a building or other construction project Soil line A pipe that carries waste from a water closet Solar water heater A device that uses sunlight to heat domestic water Soldier A brick laid on its end, with its narrow face toward the outside of the wall
