We use the Past Simple to talk about a complete action: I did my homework yesterday.

Paul wrote a letter to his girlfriend last Sunday.

We use the Past Simple to say that one thing happened after another.

I was going home when I met Ted So I stopped and we had a short conversation about our work.

We often use the Past Simple and the Past Continuous together to talk about an action that took place while another was in progress.

They were playing football when it started to rain. I saw Jane while I was waiting for the bus.

We use the Past Continuous to talk about an action that was in progress in the past.

We were having dinner when Paul phoned.

She was surfing the Internet when her mother arrived. They were walking home when they saw the accident.
