Reading for Success is a short reading coursebook of 30 classroom hours for the second term students of advanced curriculum who wish to master general English competence and skills and high scores in exams It teaches them not only English language skills with a focus on reading ones but also reading techniques and background knowledge In addition, this book is a good guide for students to study for exams The reading texts in this book covermany fields of students’lives which help them increase their vocabulary amount Also, each unit covers many types of typical reading questions which are useful for them to take English reading exams WHAT DOES EACH UNIT OF THE BOOK CONTAIN? Prepare to Read This section introduces the topic of the passage The questions encourage students to share their own thoughts and experiences, and can be used for discussion before their reading activities Word focus This matching activity introduces students to new or unfamiliar words that they will see in the reading passage Students match the given words with simple definitions Scan This activity encourages students to make a prediction about a specific piece of information that appears in the passage The aim is to motivate students to read the passages quickly as they try to find the answer Reading Passage Each reading passage in this reading book is about 300 words or a bit more Each of the units contains reading passage based on around common themes such as human affairs, places, and things happening around us Each reading passage recycles new words from the earlier passages so that students can gradually build on and consolidate their vocabulary The language is carefully graded so that students gain confidence in their reading activities Which Meaning? This feature focuses on a word (or words) mentioned in the passage that has more than one dictionary meaning Students must choose which of the dictionary definitions that fits the word as it is used in the context of the passage.The aim is to encourage students to use dictionaries more effectively, and to think about the meaning of the words in the given context Check Your Comprehension These multiple-choice questions check students’ understanding of the passage The questions include key skills such as understanding the main idea, reading for details, reading for reference, and understanding text references Vocabulary Review This section reviews the vocabulary presented in the unit It consists of a wide variety of activities, such as Words in Context (filling in the gaps), Sentence Completion (completing short advertisements and emails), and Wrong Word (finding the word that doesn’t fit the group) Other activities include Word Families, Synonyms and Antonyms, True or False, and Puzzles such as Crosswords, Word Searches, and Mystery Phrases The aim is to help students begin to use the new words as part of their active vocabulary What About You? This section is divided into two parts: Speaking and Writing The aim is to encourage students to use some of the new words they have learned in a more personal context The activity can be done in pairs or in small groups Reading Quiz This part features a short passage followed by six multiple-choice test questions The passage comprises many of the new words from the unit The multiple-choice format and the range of question types reflect the style of questions that students will encounter in standardized tests such as the TOIEC test The aim of the quiz is to act as a unit test, and also to help students with test preparation Extra Features Vocabulary Self-Quiz This is a unit-by-unit word list which lists the new words in each passage There is a space next to each word where students can write a translation, or other notes, and there is also a space for them to test themselves The aim is to help students study and review the words outside class UNIT STUNTS PEOPLE PREPARE TO READ Discuss these questions What you know about Michelle Yeoh?
