Ms Savitskaya’s aptitude for space travel was patent in her past experience in aviation Holder of several women’s records in aviation, she had flown sundry types of aircraft and made over 500 parachute jumps Her father was a Soviet Air Force Marshal, and her husband a pilot Without a qualm she boarded the spacecraft with her commander, Lieutenant Colonel Leonid Popov, and another rookie astronaut who was the flight engineer

Question III Read the passage and choose the best answer from the four options marked A, B, C or D in the following questions Identify your answer by writing the

corresponding letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet (1 pt)

Birds that feed in flocks commonly retire together into roosts The reasons for roosting communally are not always obvious, but there are some likely benefits In winter especially, it is important for birds to keep warm at night and conserve precious food reserves One way to this is to find a sheltered roost Solitary roosters shelter in dense vegetation or enter a cavity – horned larks dig holes in the ground and ptarmigan burrow into snow banks – but the effect of sheltering is magnified by several birds huddling together in the roosts, as wrens, swifts, brown creepers, bluebirds, and anise Body contact reduces the surface area exposed to the cold air, so the birds keep each other warm Two kinglets huddling together were found to reduce their heat losses by a quarter, and three together saved a third of their heat

The second possible benefit of communal roosts is that they act as "information centers." During the day, parties of birds will have spread out to forage over a very large area When they return in the evening some will have fed well, but others may have found little to eat Some investigators have observed that when the birds set out again next morning, those birds that did not feed well on the previous day appear to follow those that did The behavior of common and lesser kestrels may illustrate different feeding behaviors of similar birds with different roosting habits The common kestrel hunts vertebrate animals in a small, familiar hunting ground, whereas the very similar lesser kestrel feeds on insects over a large area The common kestrel roosts and hunts alone, but the lesser kestrel roosts and hunts in flocks, possibly so one bird can learn from others where to find insect swarms Finally, there is safety in numbers at communal roosts since there will always be a few birds awake at any given moment to give the alarm But this increased protection is partially counteracted by the fact that mass roosts attract predators and are especially vulnerable if they are on the ground Even those in trees can be attacked by birds of prey The birds on the edge are at greatest risk since predators find it easier to catch small birds perching at the margins of the roost

1 What does the passage mainly discuss?

A How birds find and store food B How birds maintain body heat in the winter

C Why birds need to establish territory D Why some species of birds nest together The word "conserve" in line is closest in meaning to

A retain B watch C locate D share Ptarmigan keep warm in the winter by

A caused B modified C intensified D combined The author mentions kinglets in line as an example of birds that

(14)

7 Which of the following statements about lesser and common kestrels is true? A The lesser kestrel and the common kestrel have similar diets

10 Which of the following is a disadvantage of communal roosts that is mentioned in the passage?

Soyuz T-7, which had a rendezvous with Salyut 7, the space station in which the longest manned orbital flight was completed

Soviet authorities announced that they were looking forward to gaining further information about “weaker sex” , so-called in the Soviet newspaper Tass, under the stressful conditions of space travel Sex, however, is not considered n impediment but rather a benefit in space, for the Soviet have lauded women for their precision and accuracy in carrying out experiments As planned, the American put their first woman in space in mid-1983 Sally Ride was their choice Ms Ride joined the NASA program with five other women and thirty men to train as astronauts in the space shuttle program She faces an epoch when space travel will no longer be a glamorous adventure but rather a commonplace day’s work

corresponding letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet (1 pts)

Birds that feed in flocks commonly retire together into roosts The reasons for roosting communally are not always obvious, but there are some likely benefits In winter especially, it is important for birds to keep warm at night and conserve precious food reserves One way to this is to find a sheltered roost Solitary roosters shelter in dense vegetation or enter a cavity – horned larks dig holes in the ground and ptarmigan burrow into snow banks – but the effect of sheltering is magnified by several birds huddling together in the roosts, as wrens, swifts, brown creepers, bluebirds, and anis Body contact reduces the surface area exposed to the cold air, so the birds keep each other warm Two kinglets huddling together were found to reduce their heat losses by a quarter, and three together saved a third of their heat

11 What does the passage mainly discuss?

A How birds find and store food B How birds maintain body heat in the winter C Why birds need to establish territory D Why some species of birds nest together

12 The word "conserve" in line is closest in meaning to

A retain B watch C locate D share 13 Ptarmigan keep warm in the winter by

XI’AN’S TERRACOTTA WARRIORS D

One of the greatest cities in the history of civilization, Xi’an had become little more than a small provincial town before the discovery of its terracotta warriors Since then, it has become one of the most important tourist destinations in the world and its prosperity has increased

correspondingly

The world-famous terracotta warriors were unearthed in 1974 by local farmers who were digging a well The army of soldiers made out of baked clay turned out to be one of the most important archaeological finds of the twentieth century

The warriors were made to protect the tomb of the First Emperor, Qin Shihuang, which lies beneath a hill 1.5 km away Work on the tomb began in 246 BC as soon as the Emperor came to power, and records say that it is filled with model palaces and even a model of China itself, with rivers of mercury that can actually be made to flow As yet, however, the tomb remains unexplored and there is no confirmation of these wonders

So far, interest has focused instead on the life-size soldiers lined up in wide ditches to the east They stand in military formation and have some armour but no helmets (which were reserved for officers) They did, however, originally carry real weapons, made of metal, which were stolen by robbers soon after the Emperor’s death

The statues themselves were made of local clay No two faces are alike – each is a personal portrait Each body was made separately The legs are solid, but the rest is hollow, with hands and head added later Details such as beards and ears were sculpted afterwards, then the whole was brightly painted It is uncertain quite why so much trouble was taken, but one theory is that the different faces, many of which belong to what have become minority races, are a celebration of the first unification of China

(29)

are on display in separate exhibition halls which allow closer inspection than is possible with the majority of figures in the ditches It is forbidden to photograph or video the main army but

photography is permitted elsewhere There is no doubt that a visit to the warriors of Xi’an is the highlight of their tour for many visitors to China

While many nineteenth–century reformers hoped to bring about reform through education or by eliminating specific social evils, some thinkers wanted to start over and remark society by founding ideal, cooperative communities The United States seemed to them a spacious and unencum bered country where models of a perfect society could succeed These

communitarian thinkers hoped their success would lead to imitation, until communities free of crime, poverty, and other social ills would cover the land A number of religious groups, notably the Shakers, practiced communal living, but the main impetus to found model communities came from nonreligious, rationalistic thinkers

Among the communitarian philosophers, three of the most influential were Robert

Owen, Charles Fourier, and John Humphrey Noyes Owen, famous for his humanitarian policies as owner of several thriving textile mills in Scotland, believed that faulty environment was to blame for human problems and that these problems could be eliminated in a rationally planned society In 1825, he put his principles into practice at New Harmony, Indiana The community failed economically after a few years but not before achieving a number of social successes Fourier, a commercial employee in France, never visited the United States However, his

theories of cooperative living influenced many American through the writings of Albert Brisbane, whose Social Destiny of Manexplained Fourierism and its self-sufficient associations or

“phalanxes” One or more of these phalanxes was organized in very Northern state The most famous were Red Bank, New Jersey, and Brook Farm, Massachusetts An early member of the latter was the author Nathaniel Hawthorne Noyes founded the most enduring and probably the oddestof the utopian communities, the Oneida Community of upstate New York Needless to say, none of these experiments had any lasting effects on the patterns of American society The main topic of the passage is……

7 Which of the following communities lasted longest?

I Read the following passage, and then choose the best answer from A, B, C or D WHY SEAT BELTS ARE NECESSARY

More than 30,000 drivers and front seat passengers are killed or seriously injured each year The impact on you of an accident can be very serious At a speed of only 30 miles per hour it is the same as falling from a third - floor window Wearing a seat belt saves lives; it reduces your chance of death or serious injury by more than half

Who has to wear a seat belt?

Drivers or front seat passengers in most vehicles If you are 14 or over it will be your responsibility to wear the belt If you not, you could be fined up to £50 It will not be up to the driver to make sure you wear your belt But it will be the driver’s responsibility to make sure that children under 14 not ride in the front unless they are wearing a seat belt of some kind

A very few vehicles have a middle front seat between the front passenger seat and the driver’s seat, for example a bench seat Your vehicle may be one of them If just one passenger sits in front, he must wear a seat belt But if two passengers sit in front, the person sitting in the middle will not have to wear a belt

When you not have to wear a seat belt

You not have to wear a seat belt in certain circumstances, such as if you are reversing your vehicle, if you are making a local delivery or collection using a vehicle constructed or adapted for that purpose, or if you have a valid medical certificate which excuses you from wearing it Make sure these circumstances apply to you before you decide not to wear your seat belt Remember you may be taken to court for not doing so, and you may be fined if you cannot prove to the court that you have been excused from wearing it

Medical exemptions

Certain people ought not to wear a seat belt because of their health It may be more risky for them to wear a belt than to be in a road accident without one But they will not have to wear a belt if they get a valid medical certificate from a doctor If you think this applies to you, go and talk to a doctor as soon as possible The doctor may reassure you that you can wear a seat belt Or he may have to examine you before he can decide whether or not to give you a certificate When you go and see him you should ask him at the start how much this would cost Keep the certificate If the police ask you why you are not wearing a seat belt, you should show them the certificate If you cannot show it to them on the spot, you should take the certificate to a police station of your choice within five days
