• His father was a novelist and traslator English and French literature

• After his father’s death, he lived in his uncle’s house
• He worked as a sailor and then captain on British ship

• In 1894, Conrad gave up the sea and decided on a literary career
• In 1895, he produced his first novel in English “ Almayer’s Folly”
• He is ragarded as one of the greatest novelists in English , though he did not speak the language fluently
