Read the text carefully, and circle the correct answer:

The search of alternative resources of energy has resulted in different directions Many communities are burning garbage and other biological waste products to produce electricity

Experimental work is being done to make synthetic fuels from coal, or coal tars But to date, that process has proved expensive Some experts are trying to revive hydroelectric power which is derived from streams and rivers Fifty years ago, hydroelectric power provided one third of the electricity used in the United States, but today it supplies only four percent The oceans are another source of energy Scientists are studying ways to change the energy of ocean currents, tides, and waves into electricity

- synthetic fuels: nhiên liệu tổng hợp

- hydroelectric power: lượng thuỷ điện

Ex: What are many communities doing to produce electricity? a burning garbage and other biological waste products b searching for alternative resources

c changing waste products into power d burning synthetic fuels from coal, or coal tars

1 Has the process of making synthetic fuels proved cheap or expensive?

a It has proved cheap c It hasn’t proved expensive b It has proved expensive d a and c are correct

2 Where is hydroelectric power derived from?

a rivers and streams c lakes and streams b rivers and oceans d streams and oceans

3 What percentage of the electricity used in the United States does hydroelectric power provide today?

a 33% c 4%

b 35% b 66%

4 What are scientists studying?

a ways to have electricity from the energy of ocean c the polluted oceans b ways to change the energy of ocean currents, tides, d a and b are correct and waves into electricity

A recent investigation by the scientists at the US Geological Survey shows that strange animal behavior might help predict future earthquakes

Investigators found such occurrences in a ten-kilometer radius of the center of a fairly recent quake Some birds screeched and flew about wildly; dogs yelped and ran around uncontrollably

Scientists believe that animals can perceive these environmental changes as early as several days before the disaster In 1976 after observing animal behavior, the Chinese scientists were able to predict a terrible earthquake Although hundreds of thousands of people were killed, the government was able to evacuate millions of other people and thus keep the death toll at a lower rate

Ex: What prediction may be made by observing animal behavior? a Environmental changes

(2)

2

c The number of people who will be killed d The number of people who will be evacuate

1/ Why can animals perceive these changes when humans can not? a Humans don’t know where to look

b Animals are more intelligent than humans

c Animals can feel the shaking of the earth by running around d Animals have certain instincts that humans don’t possess 2/ If scientists can predict earthquakes, there will be ………

a a lower death rate b fewer people evacuated c fewer environmental changes d a lower animal behavior

3/ Which of the following statements is not true?

a The Chinese scientists have successfully predicted an earthquake b By observing animal behavior, scientists can predict earthquake c Some animals may be able to sense an approaching earthquake d All birds and dogs in a ten-kilometer radius of an earthquake 4/ In the passage, the word “evacuate” most nearly means ………

a destroy b remove c save d build
