Lesson – Reading

I Objectives:

1 Educational aim: Help Ss know more about the different kinds of competitions and the enjoyment they have from them

2 Knowledge: Help Ss know the purpose of an English competition and how to join it Skills: - Guessing the meaning of words and phrases in the contest

- Reading for passage comprehension - Scanning for specific information

- Using the information they have learnt to discuss the related topic

II Methods: integrated, mainly communicative

III Teaching aids: pictures, textbook, handouts …

* Procedure:

Warm-up (4mn)

“ Guessing game”

- Have Ss listen to five pieces of music to guess the name of the competitions

- Give the answers and show the pictures of the competitions

• Who wants to be a Millionaire?

• “Chung Suc” Competition

• Ringing the Golden Bell • The last Passenger • Road to Mount Olympia

Lead to the lesson

- Work in groups

Pre-reading (8mn)

*Activity 1:

- Have Ss ask & answer about their daily routine

What time you get up / go to school / have breakfast …?

What time you often in the morning / afternoon / everning ?

- Make remarks and focus on the tense used

*Activity :

- Give hand out to Ss and have them pick out the words related to a farmer’s daily routine

- Conduct repetition of the words chorally

* Task 1: Choose the best option

- Ask Ss to read the text silently then task1 - Check the answers

- Work in individual then compare answers with a partner

* Task : Ask & answer the questions - Ask Ss to reread the text then task - Read the 1st question then ask a student to answer

- Have Ss work in pairs, asking & answering orally

- Give feedback

* Task 3:

- Divide the board into parts

Morning Afternoon Evening - Ask Ss to scan the passage & make a brief note about Mr Vy & Mrs Tuyet’s daily routine

- Set time limit

- Ask Ss to compare the answers with other groups

- Have Ss write the answers on the board

- Correct mistakes

- Give comment

- Work in pairs - Ask & answer orally He’s a peasant

2 He gets up at 4.30 then he goes down the kitchen to boil some water for his morning tea

+ In the morning:

- 4.30 Mr Vy gets up, goes down the kitchen, boils water for tea, drinks tea, has quick breakfast, leads the buffalo to the field

- 5.15: leaves house

- 5.30: arrives in the field, ploughs & harrows

- 7.45: takes a break - 10.30: goes home

- 11.30: has lunch with family + In the afternoon:

- 2.30: Mr Vy & Mrs Tuyet go to the field again,repair the banks of the plot of land He pumps water into the plot of land She does the transplanting

- 6.30: finish work - 7.00: have dinner + After dinner:

- watch TV, go to bed

Post – reading (12mm)

*Activity 1:

- Ask Ss to talk about Mr Vy & Mr Tuyet’s daily routine with books closed

- Give remarks *Activity 2:

- Ask Ss to talk about their mother’s / father’s daily routine

- Give comment & give marks

- Work in group

- Present orally before class - Work in pairs

- or Ss present orally before class Homework (1mm) Write a short passage about a Vietnamese peasant’s daily routine
