Rationale: In the context of globalization, there are more and more international companies springing up As a result, people from various countries need to communicate with each other more than in the past to exchange information and English is considered as an international language which plays a vital role in that intercultural communication English communication skills are essential for everyone in general It has become the essential factor for business and in the global organization In today’s businesses, manufacturing, logistics… all companies are not only using English as a common language which they can exchange information and maintain good working relationships but also considering it as a standard for recruiting staff The higher the English level they have, the more job opportunities they get Consequently, competence in communicating in English is an important requirement for any professional, working in a global business environment  English Faculty at Thuongmai University: The English Faculty, formerly known as the Department of Foreign Languages, was established on June 28, 2007 With 12 years of establishment and development, the English Department is increasingly asserting its leading position in the quality of training with the program, modern facilities and well-trained teachers who are welltrained both in domestic and abroad Students majoring in Business English are trained not only in business English but also in economics and commerce, with a team of good teachers with teaching experience Therefore, the goal of the faculty is to help students equip themselves with the knowledge about culture, economy, society and, the most important target is to learn English As a result, the students at English Major have to use English- communicating skills for business relationship increasingly The researcher has observed students at English Major in Thuongmai University and found that students in every other Faculty need to use the English language, especially for communication within the company and with others, namely suppliers, customers, and shipping agents Nevertheless, there is some miscommunication in using English such as grammar errors and inappropriate vocabulary, incorrect format, and limited vocabulary, hesitant to communicate can lead to business mistakes and leave a bad impression on other business partners For these reasons, this study aims to survey the problems related to the Englishcommunicating skills of final year students at English Faculty- who almost finished their internship at companies 1.2 Previous research: According to Marc J Riemer (2007) in Communication Skills for the 21st Century Engineer found that communication skills are an essential component in the education of engineering students to facilitate not just students’ education but also to prepare them for their future careers Suggestions for communication skills development are made, including the posit that communication skills be integrated across the curriculum, rather than include it asa stand-alone subject in already packed engineering curricula, so as to reinforce student learning G Maria B (2010) in Sounding natural: improving oral presentation skills reported that multimodal resources can be used to teach oral communication strategies, asexemplified in a course taught at the University of Padua, Italy The course focused on lexicon and language structures in use, pronunciation and intonation, body language, and cultural awareness Overall, the course appeared to be highly effective in raising students’awareness of facts about English communication 1.3 Aims of the study This study aims to answer the research questions: 1-What are the significant problems in English communication of final year students in English Faculty in Thuongmai Unversity? 2-What are solutions to improve English communication skills for final year students in English Faculty in Thuongmai University? Objectives of the study: To survey the significant problems in using English communicating skills of the final year students both inside and outside of the class To find out some solutions to boost English communicating skills in English Faculty 1.4 Definition of terms Communication: Communication, at its simplest, is the act of transferring information from one place to another It may be vocally (using voice), written (using printed or digital media such as books, magazines, websites or emails), visually (using logos, maps, charts or graphs) or non-verbally (using body language, gestures and the tone and pitch of voice) In practice, it is often a combination of several of these 1.5 Research subjects This study is focused on surveying the problems related to the English communication skills (verbal, non-verbal and writing) of final year students in English Faculty of Thuongmai university to improve their English writing skills 1.6 Scope of the study This study was conducted among classes at K52 English Faculty of Thuongmai University The applicants are 100 internship students in these classes 1.7 Research methodology In this study, I used two principal methods: quantitative research and qualitative research In particular, there were two ways to collect data for study The first way was collecting data from the questionnaire The second way was collecting data from the personal interview Questionnaire and interviews were carried out with internship students to gather the most reliable data for analysis to find answers the research question mentioned above Questionnaires are expected to save time and can gather data from large group of students in the same time The questionnaires were delivered to 100 students at K52 English Faculty of Thuongmai University to collect useful data Interviews were implemented with 25 students when they had free time Most of them actively participated in answering all questions The combination of both methods is useful to collect and analyze data basing on results After having been collected, data are analyzed to point essential findings as well as problems in using English, suggest strategies and solution for deal with the difficulties structures have prevented them from communicating with each other efficiently They often use Vietnamese instead of English for communication They find speaking in Vietnamese easier than in English Gradually, using Vietnamese become a habit even when many students are capable of expressing themselves in English That is reason why many of them not have the habit of speaking English This will not only effects to ability to think in English but also prevent them from improving their speaking skills In the companies or at schools, although English is needed in some fields during working, the environment is still little favorable for all of the students to improve and use English frequently Because, beside English classes, usually 2-3 classes a week, they have to attend other subjects so they only have chance to practice English in these classes 23% students said that lack of good communication communicative environment is the reason of the difficulty they encountered Besides, they only use English in some particular tasks, therefore when not speaking as well as using English daily, their language level will be lost and they need more time to restore again 3.2.3: Lack of vocabulary: In each special fields of business, there are huge number of special vocabulary used Therefore, 20 students implementing the questionnaire find it difficult to speak, read, write with documents having many special vocabularies The problem is when they are speaking they not have enough time to think about the grammatical structures to see whether it is right or not This is called reflexive listening and speaking According to some others, they cannot express all their ideas in English with managers clearly because partly of their levels, their reticent character or the nature of problems There are still some students who want to speak English daily but the number is still limited Analyzing common causes of 20 students who consider lacking of vocabulary as differences of communicating in English: Numbe r Weakness Frequency Percentage Limited Amount of Vocabulary Problems of Using Incorrect Grammar Students not follow their study in a good Way Students don’t Practice Speaking Skill Daily Pronunciation Difficulties 30 20 10 15 25 Table 3.5: The factors that cause lack of vocabulary problems of 20 students who consider lacking of vocabulary as differences of communicating in English - Limited Amount of Vocabulary: This problem occupied top of the results according students' answers Students have difficulties in memorizing vocabularies and English terms On the other hands, most of the students also have problems in applying derivation rules out of 20 students, mentioned that they have suffered of limited amount of vocabulary inside the classroom An evidence of that is as follows: Student number one said," When I try to make a conversation with another, problem of a limited vocabulary faces me" - Problems of Using Incorrect Grammar: Many students have erroneous usage of English grammar and incorrectly utilizing structures of sentence during the conversation, for example using verb forms doesn't match either the subjects or tense, or using the sentence missing verbs out of 20 students, mentioned that they have suffered from problems of using incorrect grammar inside the classroom An evidence of that is as follows: Student number four said, "I suffered from weakness of using English language rules" - Students not follow their study in a good Way: This point obviously was noticed among students Many of the sample individuals don't pay attention to their study and follow a correct way, hence, this neglect makes them unable to perform English speaking skills effectively inside the classroom out of 20 participants mentioned that they have suffered of limitation of following their study An example of that is as follows: Student number thirteen said, "I not follow my study, if I don't have examinations" - Students don’t Practice Speaking Skill Daily: This factor showed results that same as the previous ones Less frequent of students' practice short conversations among themselves and this leads them to be in low level of speaking skill, participants of 20 participants, mentioned that they have suffered of limitation of the daily practice of conversation An example of that is as follows: Student number eight said, "I have a weakness because I don't practice English daily" - Pronunciation Difficulties: The results of pronunciation difficulties seemed to be less than all previously mentioned problems, students out of 20 students mentioned that they have suffered of pronunciation problems An evidence of that is as follows: Student number fifteenth said, "I have a problem in pronunciation of some words" CHAPTER 4: CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTIONS According to the results collected from survey, we can explore some main findings as well as some problems they encountered Therefore, in this part, I am suggesting some of potential solutions to solve their problem 4.1 Suggestions for students: Each person is the most important factor taking responsibility for the final results of learning everything from the smallest to biggest one, especially something need to be self-improved like communicating in English It requires them to have many necessary factors Students should push themselves, implement discipline and create new motivation and interest when they are communicating in English As I said at the beginning of this article, you might know a lot about the language, but this is passive knowledge that must be activated somehow Your aim is to be able to produce correct English, practice is undeniably the best way to learn and improve Firstly, It is necessary that each student should possess useful measures in order to cultivate the speaking and writing ability Writing is one way of producing language; it may help you get used to and reflect on the ways English operates, which, in turn, might prove to be useful when speaking How we have to it? Because when expressing yourself via communication, you need to show your ideas, your thought to the listeners and readers Speaking, on the other hand, is a much more spontaneous process and nothing prepares you for it better than actually doing it There is no ways except speaking or writing Therefore, one of outstanding solutions proposed in the betterment of the English communication skills for fourth-year English - majored students in Thuongmai university- is to create infatuation with speaking or writing English Secondly, students can better their English communication by trying and learning to speak English actively You can learn by yourself at home or take a class of communicating in English Some recommending measures are speaking English loudly, creating environment to use English such as proactively looking for communication opportunities, telling daily life stories, speaking English with native speakers,… Besides, practicing your interrogatives We also need to keep in mind the fact that communication is a two-way process Not only does it make you seem uninterested – even rude – if you don’t ask questions, you might also end up being the one who has to all the talking So, when you’ve run out of ideas about what to say next, remember: others might have something to add “What are your views on that?” “How about you? What you think?” Questions like this will keep the conversation going and will show your interest in other people’s opinion They will also give you time to relax a little and start enjoying yourself Using English more frequently is an essential factor to ameliorate English communication skill This research has shown that, students who rarely or hesitate to speak English confirm that their English communication were not very good Most of them feel nervous or timid when they have to speak or write English( writing reports, emails, quotation, responds to customers,…) It’s barrier that prevents them from communicating with others who need to use English Therefore, the next solution for improving English communication skill is to get rid of the distractions and diffident of yourself Firstly, words like “ah, yeah”, “hmm”… have reported anxiety, suspense, or unclear information Therefore, you need to minimize these words in your conversation, to avoid being underestimated by these words Secondly, communication is very important as people spend about 75 % of their waking hours communicating of which about 80 % happens non-verbally by understanding and sending non-verbal cues Non-verbal communication is more impactful than verbal communication (Shraddha Bajracharya, January 7, 2018, "Why is Non-verbal Communication Important?", Businesstopia) You can use more wordless communication like hand gesture, nod head, eye- contact and simply smile more Moreover, learning vocabulary is one of the most important solutions in the betterment of the students’ communication skill Because, in any case of using English, you always have to apply right vocabulary in right sentences More specifically, it is unarguable that reading is one of the most vital to enhance vocabulary The more the students read, especially magazines and newspapers, the more words the students are exposed to Good words and phrases if the students are not sure how to pronounce, they must look up the electronic dictionary, see the phonetic transcription, listen to the native speaker recite and repeat many times, very loudly (at least times) until they can play that word is very smooth Then the students look at sample sentences in two different dictionaries (for example Oxford and Longman English Dictionary Online) to better understand the meaning and usage of the word or structure In a way, the students should use sounds, images, smells, visual emotions to learn words effectively as well as put the sentence with the word and structure (think and say the sentence aloud at the same time, not copy and then read again) Furthermore, for each new word structure, the students should put many sentences on different topics Alternatively, the students can put words into the word book to review, or use quize software to review words Moreover, the students can write words out of the palm of the hand, each day 10 words Whenever possible, the students review these words Particularly, the students can talk about a problem or tell a story and put these 10 words into that story This way the students have 300 more words per month that the students actually use What is more, the students should learn vocabulary with determination and creativity Additionally, some useful tools are also proposed for helping improve the students’ vocabulary such as Dictionary.com’s wordof-the-day, English-word Information; Free Rice: Learn Vocabulary, Donate Rice to UN World Food program; WordPlays.com: Word Games; Vocab Vitamins: Grammar, Vocabulary Supplements, and so forth To be rich at vocabulary is not only helps students to be more creative but also more confident when using English to communicate It’s a multifunctional method to improve English communication skill 4.2 Suggestion for teachers on teaching method: It is particularly difficult to obtain the best result as well as keep motivation levels up unless the learners’ needs can meet in each class The teachers’ responsibility is to satisfy all their needs as well as concretize intended aims and objectives of the course to enhance the quality of both teaching and learning That is the reason why I would like to mention some suggestions for teachers with the hope that the teacher can sympathize and support well for the students’ study Firstly, it is undeniable that the teachers’ attitude directly has influence on the quality of studying Certainly, in teaching, a friendly atmosphere in classroom is believed to bring in a great impulse for studying Therefore, during his teaching time the teacher should create a free atmosphere to help students study under no pressure and have chance to ask or state their opinions freely about some wondered things Providing students with useful knowledge as well as answering or explaining students’ questions enthusiastically are things teachers can to help both teachers and students make progress in teaching and studying This returns in both teachers and learners can create an exciting and comfortable environment to communicate in English Every teacher obviously has his own way of teaching, if the teacher wants his students pay attention to his lesson and seriously concentrate on studying, he surely has to be strict in teaching However, from the students’ viewpoint, his sternness restrains their creation in studying The students dare not state out their thinking and be afraid to contribute their opinions to new lesson, it is, therefore, one of the failures in classroom Creating a closer relationship in which the teacher plays a crucial role as students’ brother or father who understands their difficulties and sympathizes with their psychological tensions is really necessary for every teacher to Secondly, teaching materials is also estimated as an important part of every subject Most students are keen on talking topics related to some topics that they feel interested in such as lifestyle, interests, music, health, education and entertainment because these topics are quite close to their daily life, and they have enough knowledge to understand and disuss it Moreover, they can deal with vocabulary related to these fields easier than other topics like politics, science, psychology, or philosophy This is the reason why some students hope their teachers can give them common topics related to their interest’s fields to be able to talk more In addition, teaching materials should be various in topic and suitable for students’ ability Teachers should give students many enjoyable and attractive topics with the aims of helping them practice and learn some things from it Educational aims can be inserted in each English lesson However, teachers should notice to students’ ability before choosing a topic to discuss The level of difficulty should be raised gradually from the beginning to the end of the course Furthermore, the teacher should allow students to choose the topics they like to write or present in class instead of monopolizing decides the topics This can be conducted once or twice a week to obey to school curriculum However, it should be under the teacher’s approval In short, this part is about my suggestions on how to enhance vocabulary, grammar and create English communicating environment at class to limit the students’ difficulties in using English to interact 4.3 Suggestion for administrator 4.3.1 Infrastructure The most effective way to address the root of those difficulties would be for the school to increase investment in the infrastructure as well as material facilities in service of training More specifically, the school ought to invest in improving the operational efficiency of the library In a way, the school library document should be supplemented with other types of books, newspapers, magazines in English for the purpose of studying as well as reading entertainment for students because this is one of the document channels to attract the attention of many students Furthermore, the library should be invested in facilities and equipment and can add various types of electronic books, networked computers so that students can easily access the Internet This is one of the most obvious methods to turn the library into a place to study, and entertain and create multimedia A possibly more successful way to confront those challenges would be to change the mode of operation of the library in a positive and friendly way such as: the archive is an open repository which is classified by color code; encouraging the students to participate in the activities of the library such as lending documents; instructing friends to search for documents; strengthening propaganda activities to guide reading through contests about reading books, reading clubs, and so forth This raises the students' selfawareness, while stimulating students' reading needs and interests 4.3.2 Learning time Realistically, only one shift a week of study time is not enough for students to enhance the translation skills Therefore, the most obvious solution for the school to increase the number of lessons and the distance between lessons must be reasonable Additionally, translation subject is usually taught in the third year of college This time is completely consistent with the wishes and aspirations of students because most students argue that translation subject is one of the most difficult subjects in the English faculty of curriculum 4.3.3: Human Resources: Thuongmai University should focus on teaching quality by improving teachers’ qualifications For instance, focus on training both domestic and oversea, educational exchange with countries in the regions to learn about new teaching methods Last but not least, recruiting native teachers to teach students in English Faculty The fact that, students in English Faculty are now mostly learning with Vietnamese teachers It means that, the students may have intention to speak Vietnamese instead of using 100% English in the classes Therefore, it will be encouraging for students to learn with native English teachers CONCLUSION: English communication skills are really important in modern life, especially in business environment because of the integration into global market and also a useful preparation for better career ladder of each individual in future Thanks to English, people understand other cultures in the world more as well as have a common and popular tool to keep in tough and exchange ideas and get closer to others However, it is really difficult for the students of English Faculty to master communication skills Apparently, encountering difficulties in learning and communicating English are inevitable Therefore, the problem relates to student’s difficulties are the objectives and the concentration of this thesis Then, some helpful suggestions and solutions are given in order to assist them surmount challenges as well as to enhance the translation skill in the faculty of English, Thuong Mai University The thesis is divided into four main chapters The first chapter is Overview of the study, which provides the introduction of the study mainly with rationale, previous studies, aim of the study, research subject, scope, research methodology and organization of the study The literature review discussed in the thesis is mentioned in chapter two, including the definitions of communication skill, types of communication, factors influencing on communication skills and communication problems This chapter provides the readers with fundamental theories critical to the analysis of the study Chapter three is Research findings, which concludes the summary, data analysis and discussion of the major findings Chapter four is Solution suggestions, which takes the measures for the students to overcome those difficulties as well as for the teachers on meeting the students’ expectations in studying English which is based on the result of the survey questionnaire and the interview questions Nevertheless, this is the first time I have had a chance to a research, thus making mistakes during the study is unavoidable Because of the limited time of the research, it is not easy for me to collect much more information about the students’ difficulties in communicating in English However, I hope that the thesis named “A study on English communication skills of final year students at English Faculty, Thuongmai University” will be able to make contribution its usefulness to both the students and in adjusting the learning and teaching method REFERENCES Folse, Keith S (2004), Read
