Despite widespread assumptions to the contrary, there is no prescribed pathway for the development of a society, nosingle modelonwhichdevelopmentstrategiesshouldbebased The Western model of development, conceived linear process involving largely economic factors, is often incompatible with the complex social, cultural and political dimensions of societies pursuing different goals, reflecting their own values The ideology of development has all too often tended to damage the social fabric and foundations- often rooted in traditions of communal solidarity- of the communities that have received “development aid”
Just as no development strategy can be said to be culturally neutral, a culturally sensitive approach to development is the key to addressing the interlinked social, economic and environmental problems confronting the planet as a whole Cultural diversity - which emphasizes the dynamic interactions between cultures and sensitivity to cultural contexts - thus becomes a key lever for ensuring sustainable, holistic development strategies While the international community, in its attempts to operationalize the concept of sustainable development over the last two decades, has begun to acknowledge the role of culture in the development process, the cultural factor has yet to be fully integrated into the development equation
The 1987 Bruntland Report of the UN Commission on Environment and Development (UNCED), entitled our Common Future, was seminal in its assertion that genuine development must be sustainable - denoting a form of growth “that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, sustainability was conceived in terms of the three pillars of economic viability, social responsiveness and respect for the environment These pillars have since served as the basis for important standard-setting instruments, including the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Nations Framework Convention on ClimateChange (UNFCCC) The 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg went further by recognizing cultural diversity as a significant cross-cutting factor in sustainable development Cultural diversity must be seen as a cross-cutting (rather than as a separate, fourth pillar of sustainability), with an important role to play in all development projects, from poverty eradication and the safeguarding of biodiversity to resource management and climate change

There are a number of natural disasters that can strike across the globe Two that are frequently linked to one another are earthquakes and tsunamis Both of them can cause a great amount of devastation when they hit However, tsunamis are the direct result of earthquakes and cannot happen without them
The Earth has three main parts They are the crust, the mantle, and the core The crust is the outer layer of the Earth It is not a single piece of land Instead, it is comprised of a number of plates There are a few enormous plates and many smaller ones These plates essentially rest upon the mantle, which is fluid As a result, the plates are in constant - yet slow - motion The plates may move away from or towards other plates In some cases, they collide violently with the plates adjoining them The movement of the plates causes tension in the rock Over a long time, this tension may build up When it is released, an earthquake happens
Tens of thousands of earthquakes happen every year The vast majority are so small that only scientific instruments can perceive them Others are powerful enough that people can feel them, yet they cause little harm or damage More powerful earthquakes, however, can cause buildings, bridges, and other structures to collapse They may additionally injure and skill thousands of people and might even cause the land to change it appearance
Since most of the Earth's surface is water, numerous earthquakes happen beneath the planet's oceans Underwater earthquakes cause the seafloor to move This results in the displacement of water in the ocean When this occurs, a tsunami may form This is a wave that forms on the surface and moves in all directions from the place where the earthquake happened A tsunami moves extremely quickly and can travel thousands of kilometres As it approaches land, the water near the coast gets sucked out to sea This causes the tsunamis to increase in height Minutes later, the tsunami arrives A large tsunami - one more than ten meters in height - can travel far inland As it does that, it can flood the land, destroy human settlements, and kill large numbers of people

Last year, there were millions of international tourist arrivals across the globe Whether they were students on their (46) years looking for overseas adventure, stressed-out workers hoping to get away for a weekend, or retirees (47) to relax in an exotic location- clearly none of them thought they could find the same experience at home The question is whether foreign travel brings more advantages or disadvantages
An obvious positive point is that going abroad sometimes helps people to expand their knowledge of the world If they are (48) _ - minded, they can learn about new cultures and hopefully gain a more accurate understanding about their way of life In addition, there is the economic benefit of tourism to countries which have few other resources It can provide an income to many people within the industry Having said that, some people simply go to a foreign resort (49) by high walls and therefore learn little about their holiday (50) Another issue is that hordes of tourists often spoil the “unspoilt” places they visit The most recent example of this is Antarctica, where last year cruise ships took thousands of visitors to view the disappearing icebergs and wildlife Vegetation, nesting penguins and resting walrus are vulnerable when humans intrude
