Each society has its own beliefs, attitudes, customs, behaviors, and social habits These give people a sense of who they are, how they are supposed to behave, and what they should or should not These 'rules' reflect the 'culture' of a country

People become conscious of such rules when they meet people from different cultures For example, in some cultures, being on time can mean turning up several hours late for an appointment, even for a business meeting; in others, p.m means p.m Also, the rules about when to eat vary from culture to culture Many North Americans and Europeans are used to having three mealtimes a day and organizing their timetable around them In other countries, on the other hand, it’s not the custom to have strict rules like this - people eat when they want to, and every family has its own timetable

When people visit or live in a country for the first time, they are often surprised at the differences that exist between their own culture and the culture in the other country The most common way of comparing two cultures is in terms of their differences - not their similarities For some people, traveling abroad is the thing they enjoy most in life; for others, though, cultural differences make them feel uncomfortable, frightened, or even insecure This is known as "culture shock"

When you are visiting a foreign country, it is important to understand and appreciate cultural differences This can help people avoid misunderstandings, develop friendships more easily, and feel more comfortable when traveling or living abroad

Here are several things to to avoid “culture shock”:

 Avoid quickly judgment; try to understand people in other culture from their own point of view  Become aware of what is going on around you, and why?

 Don’t think of your cultural habits as “right” and other people as “wrong”  Be willing to try new things and to have new experiences

 Try to appreciate and understand other people’s values

 Think about your own culture to see how it influences your attitudes and actions  Avoid having negative stereotypes about foreigners and cultures

 Show interests in as well as respect, sincerity acceptance and concern for things that are important to

other people

If we took a look at how people in Europe communicated just one hundred years ago, we would be very surprised to find out that English was hardly used outside the United Kingdom The language most commonly used between people of different nationalities, and particularly the aristocracy, was French In fact, French was the language of diplomacy, culture and education However, that is not the case nowadays English has replaced French as the international language of communication Today, there are more people who speak English as a second language than people who speak it as a first language

There are many reasons why English has become the language of international communication Britain’s colonization of many parts of the world had something to with it, but it is mainly due to America’s rise to the position of major world power This helped spread popular American culture throughout the world bringing the language with it

But is it good that English has spread to all parts of the world so quickly? Language specialists seem to be divided over this issue There are those who claim that it is important to have a language that the people in our increasingly globalized world have in common According to others, English is associated with a particular culture and therefore promotes that culture at the expense of others Linguists have suggested “Esperanto”, an artificially put-together language, as a solution to international communication problems but without success So English will continue being the world language until some other language, maybe Chinese, which is the most widely-spoken native language in the world, takes over as the world’s international language instead of English

Question 43 According to the passage, a century ago A educated people throughout Europe spoke English

B foreign travelers to England spoke only French C French was much more popular than English D only the French aristocracy could speak English

C America’s becoming powerful D The development of American culture Question 45 What is meant by “the language of diplomacy”?

A The language used by ordinary people

B The language used by the English and the French C The language used by the aristocracy

D The language used by governments

Question 46 What is true according to the passage?

A The linguists don’t like Esperanto B Esperanto is not a natural language

C Esperanto is difficult to learn D Esperanto is becoming more and more popular Question 47 The linguists’opinion on the spread of English is

A split B positive C negative D undecided

Question 48 The author believes that A English is easier to learn than Chinese

B English will probably be replaced as an international language

C Chinese is going to be the next language of international communication D Chinese is growing in popularity among non-native speakers

Question 49 These days _

Question 50 What would be a good title for this passage?

A English in the future B English as an international language C English language means English culture D English - a difficult language to learn

Simply being bilingual doesn't qualify someone to interpret Interpreting is not only a mechanical process of converting one sentence in language A into the same sentence in language B Rather, it's a complex art in which thoughts and idioms that have no obvious counterparts from tongue to tongue - or words that have several meanings must be quickly transformed in such a way that the message is clearly and accurately expressed to the listener

At one international conference, an American speaker said, “You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear”, which meant nothing to the Spanish audience The interpretation was, “A monkey in a silk dress is still a monkey” - an idiom the Spanish understood and that expressed the same idea

There are kinds of interpreters, simultaneous and consecutive The former, sitting in a separated booth, usually at a large multilingual conference, speaks to listeners wearing headphones, interpreting what a foreign language speaker says - actually a sentence behind Consecutive interpreters are the ones most international negotiations use They are employed for smaller meetings without sound booths and headphones Consecutive interpretation also requires two-person teams A foreign speaker says his piece while the interpreter, using a special shorthand, takes notes and during a pause, tells the client what was said Question 36: What is the purpose of the passage?

Hotels were among the earliest facilities that bound the United States together They were both creatures and creators of communities, as well as symptoms of the frenetic quest for community Even in the first part of the nineteenth century, Americans were already forming the habit of gathering from all corners of the nation for both public and private, business and pleasure purposes Conventions were the new occasions, and hotels were distinctively American facilities making conventions possible The first national convention of a major party to choose a candidate for President (that of the National Republican party, which met on December 12, 1831, and nominated Henry Clay for President) was held in Baltimore, at a hotel that was then reputed to be the best in the country The presence in Baltimore of Barnum's City Hotel, a six-story building with two hundred apartments, helps explain why many other early national political conventions were held there

In the longer run, too, American hotels made other national conventions not only possible but pleasant and convivial The growing custom of regularly assembling from afar the representatives of all kinds of groups - not only for political conventions, but also for commercial, professional, learned, and avocational ones - in turn supported the multiplying hotels By mid-twentieth century, conventions accounted for over a third of the yearly room occupancy of all hotels in the nation; about eighteen thousand different conventions were held annually with a total attendance of about ten million persons

Nineteenth-century American hotelkeepers, who were no longer the genial, deferential “hosts” of the eighteenth-century European inn, became leading citizens Holding a large stake in the community, they exercised power to make it prosper As owners or managers of the local “palace of the public”, they were makers and shapers of a principal community attraction Travelers from abroad were mildly shocked by this high social position

Question 43: What is the main topic of the passage? A The importance of hotels in American culture B How American hotels differed from European hotels

There are kinds of interpreters, simultaneous and consecutive The former, sitting in a separated booth, usually at a large multilingual conference, speaks to listeners wearing headphones, interpreting what a foreign language speaker says - actually a sentence behind Consecutive interpreters are the ones most international negotiations use They are employed for smaller meetings without sound booths and headphones Consecutive interpretation also requires two-person teams A foreign speaker says his piece while the interpreter, using a special shorthand, takes notes and during a pause, tells the client what was said Question 36: What is a difference mentioned between a simultaneous interpreter and a consecutive interpreter?

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from to 8.

There are kinds of interpreters, simultaneous and consecutive The former, sitting in a separated booth, usually at a large multilingual conference, speaks to listeners wearing headphones, interpreting what a foreign language speaker says - actually a sentence behind Consecutive interpreters are the ones most international negotiations use They are employed for smaller meetings without sound booths and headphones Consecutive interpretation also requires two-person teams A foreign speaker says his piece while the interpreter, using a special shorthand, takes notes and during a pause, tells the client what was said Question 1: The example “You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear” is used to

(43)

America’s rise to the position of major world power This helped spread popular American culture throughout the world bringing the language with it
