colleagues who are always beside me to support and encourage me to finish my graduation paper iv ABSTRACT Collocation is an important aspect in vocabulary acquisition It has become the subject of a linguistic study only recently, it arouses a growing interest in numerous linguists and is defined in various ways However, English learners in general and Vietnamese students in particular often have trouble in using collocation properly Therefore, this graduation paper is written with the aim of investigating the syntactic and semantic features of the English collocations containing the word “play” with reference to their Vietnamese equivalents Three objectives are included in the research: (1) pointing out the syntactic and semantic features of English collocations containing the word “play”; (2) figuring out the similarities and differences in collocations containing the collocation “play” in English and their Vietnamese equivalents; (3) providing some suggestions for the teaching and learning English collocations containing the word “play” Contrastive analysis and descriptive are two main methods used in this study Data used for analysis in this study were mainly collected from grammar books and dictionaries The study has shown syntactic and semantic features of English collocations containing the word “play” with reference to the Vietnamese equivalents From this study, teachers and learners will enhance knowledge about collocations and be able to apply these collocations in their communication effectively without confusion This research can also be a useful source further research 57 REFERENCES I viii ix CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION 1.1 Rationale Vocabulary plays an important role in teaching and studying English While without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed This viewpoint has been supported by many researchers in the field of second language acquisition (SLA) who have emphasize the significance of vocabulary and agreed that vocabulary is equally, if not more, important than language structure in language acquisition This is the reason why the teaching of vocabulary is as important as the teaching of grammar Within the area of vocabulary research, collocations that are a transitional area between idioms and free combinations have attracted the attention of language researchers And language researchers have pointed out many reasons why collocations are so important in language acquisition First, acquiring collocations is beneficial for EFL learners and “communicative competence” To gain overall language proficiency, learners need to gain collocation competence At the same time, acquiring collocation knowledge may help overcome the problems of comprehending a sentence word by word thus learners ‘listening and reading abilities can be improved Also, by mastering collocations, learners’speech sounds more natural, and is more easily understood by native speakers With increasing knowledge of collocations, EFL learners may be able to speed up their thinking in speaking and getting their meaning across more effectively Collocation is an issue that is popular in English as well as any other languages in the world; it is one of the fields which have never been studied exhaustively due to their interestingness and variety Collocations make the communication more natural and probably more effective However, because in daily communication as well as in written text, the meanings are affected by the culture and customs of each country, collocations cause numerous troubles for English-speaking people The collocations containing the word “play” are commonly-used and confusing phrases in most cases they consist of are verb and noun and they have a wide range of meanings Thereby, this study will focus on analyzing the structures and meanings of the collocations with “play” by illustrating syntactic and semantic features in order to figure out the similarities and differences of the “play”-contained collocations in English and their Vietnamese equivalents Various examples of these collocations are analyzed cautiously with qualitative, descriptive and contrastive methods basing on Morris Thirdly, English collocations introduced to learners should be grouped into semantic fields, topics or key words By this way, learners can catch the meaning and retain new English collocations containing the word “PLAY” longer in memory To sum up, teaching a language not only helps learners learn how to apply knowledge of English collocations generally and English collocations containing the word “PLAY” particularly in communication but also provides learners with a good opportunity to acquire information about a language’s culture and inspires them to love their own language and culture as well as the language and culture they are learning 4.4.2 Suggestions for learning English expressions containing the word "PLAY” For learners of English, some implications can be generated for the learners Firstly, the context should be offered for students to enhance interpretation of English collocations containing the word “PLAY” Secondly, at all levels, learners always encounter idioms and this can be a big problem if they are unfamiliar Hence, it would be better for learners to many topic-based exercises as possible Another thing is that learners not only have the basic knowledge of a language but also should have a good background knowledge of history, culture or customs which is related to English collocations containing the word “PLAY” in process of dealing with learning of English collocation 4.5 Summary To sum up, the investigation into English collocations containing the word “PLAY” and their equivalents in Vietnamese indicates that the word “PLAY” is used as verbs or nouns with various forms such single nouns, phrasal nouns, single verbs, phrasal verbs, and idioms and functions as the subjects, objects and adverbs in English sentences Furthermore, the word “PLAY” is used to express various meanings, including literal and figurative meanings whether it is used as a verb or a noun in English sentences Lastly, there are both similarities and differences in syntactic and semantic features of English collocations containing the word “PLAY” and their equivalents in Vietnamese 54 CHAPTER 5: CONCLUSION 5.1 Recapitulation To achieve the study’s aims, I firstly present some theoretical backgrounds to support the research All the linguists share the same point of view that collocation plays a crucial role in facilitating language production in order to speak naturally like native speakers After being defined and differentiated from collocations and free combinations, English collocations are then classified into different types according to different scholars Some properties of collocations are then drawing In addition, some previous studies of collocations have been briefly reviewed In the main part of the study, the researcher collects several English sentences in which the collocations containing the word “play” occur Data used are gathered from different sources Most of them are English-Vietnamese bilingual materials to assure the value of Vietnamese equivalents The collocations containing the word “play” have different meanings in different contexts Their Vietnamese equivalents are also changeable in different corresponding contexts 5.2 Concluding remarks The study is carried out with the aim of investigating the syntactic and semantic features of the English collocation containing the word “play” and point out the similarities and differences to their Vietnamese equivalents The following objectives are shown in the study:(1) pointing out the syntactic and semantic features of English collocations containing the word “play” (2) finding out the similarities and differences in collocations containing the collocation “play” in English and their Vietnamese equivalents and (3) - providing some recommendations for the teaching and learning English collocations containing the word “play” Based on the findings presented in the previous chapter, the following remarks can be drawn: Syntactically, most of the English collocation containing the word “play” can be transitive, taking direct objects, indirect objects The investigation into 178 examples about English collocations containing the word and the equivalents in Vietnamese indicates that: both English and Vietnamese collocations containing the word ““play” ” have the patterns of in form of single nouns, single verbs, noun 55 phrases, and verb phrases In detail, both have five structures in common (1) S + PLAY + (OBJECT) (2) S + PLAY + PREPOSITION + (OBJECT) (3)PLAY + VERB + (OBJECT) (4)PLAY-NOUN + VERB + OBJECT (5)S + VERB + PLAY-NOUN However, there are some differences between “play collocations” in English and their Vietnamese equivalents First, some elements are omitted when being translated into Vietnamese Second, “play” collocations in English has varied forms Third, “chơi” in Vietnamese functions as an adverb while in English, they not Last, “play” as nouns in English turns into verbs when they are translated into Vietnamese Semantically, from analyzing the examples taken from grammar books and dictionaries, we can conclude that the English collocation containing the word “play” have a wide range of meaning Both English and Vietnamese collocations containing the word “Play” share the same three main topics, including “doing activities for fun”, “performing”, and “acting” Beside the similarity, the difference lies on the changing meanings when they are translated from Vietnamese into English and vice versa These lead to the similarities in the ways of expressing ideas and concepts through the collocations containing the word “play” In fact, some English collocations containing the word “play” have similar equivalents in Vietnamese in terms of both meaning and vocabulary It is found that the meaning “doing activities for fun” is the most common And the least common meaning of the English collocations containing the word “play” is idioms The English collocations containing the word “play” have some similarities to their Vietnamese equivalents However, there are some differences between them in terms of both syntax and semantics Therefore, when teaching the English collocations containing the word “play”, the teachers have to pay more attention to the structures and its meanings 5.3 Limitations of the current research There are many aspects of the word “play” which can be investigated, the study however only focuses on syntactic and semantic features of the word “play” in collocations The second limitation pertains to the number of the selected collocations used in this study Due to the time constraints, it is unable to list all collocations containing the word “play” to help teachers and learners of English have a thorough understanding of this word in collocations The third limitation of 56 the study is related to the time constraints for both the participants and the researcher This study is limited to collocation test to measure the production and reception as well as the situation of teaching and learning collocations with the word “play” in particular and other collocations in general, which may not be enough to draw detailed and exact implications The last limitation is due to the limited knowledge of the author so this thesis may have shortcomings Therefore, all the remarks and comments from the readers will be highly appreciated 5.4 Recommendations for a further research The findings of the present study are by no means a complete picture of collocations The present study is only concerned with syntactic and semantic features of the word collocations due to the time, limitations and requirement of the minor M.A research In fact, there are still many other aspects still remaining to be investigated This is why further research is recommended to be done in the following areas: First, the research should be done to investigate the w o r d “ p l a y” and “chơi”, synonyms and idioms with both words to help teachers and learners of English to have an overall picture of the similarities and differences between the two words Second, researches on other groups of English and Vietnamese collocations rather than English and Vietnamese collocations containing the word “play” from perspective components could be very interesting and meaningful Third, the research should be
