some children According to research on kids and sports, 40 million kids play sports in the US Of these, 18 million say theyhave been yelled at or called names while playing sports This leaves many children with a bad impression of sports Theythink sports are just too aggressive

Many researchers believe adults, especially parents and coaches, are the main cause of too much aggression in children’s

sports They believe children copy aggressive adult behaviour This behaviour is then further reinforced through both positive

and negative feedback Parents and coaches are powerful teachers because children usually look up to them Often theseadults behave aggressively themselves, sending children the message that winning is everything At children’s sportingevents, parents may yell insults at other players or cheer when their child behaves aggressively As well, children may betaught that hurting other players is acceptable, or they may be pushed to continue playing even when they are injured Inaddition, the media makes violence seem exciting Children watch adult sports games and see violent behaviour replayed overand over on television

As a society, we really need to face up to this problem and do something about it Parents and coaches should act as better

examples for children They also need to teach children better values They should teach children to enjoy themselves whetherthey win or not It is not necessary to knock yourself out to enjoy sports Winning is not everything In addition, childrenshould not be allowed to continue to play when they are injured Sending a child with an injury into a game gives the child themessage that health is not as important as winning If we make some basic changes, children might learn to enjoy sportsagain

It’s ahard task certainly, but the local council have begun to take on the challenge They have launched and advertising campaignhas been a success As local resident Brian Maloney says, "Eastbourne may never take (40) from Brighton as a centre ofyouth culture but the town is slowly beginning to attract more young people."

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

SLEEP CYCLES

Whether one is awake or as leep, the brain emits electrical waves These waves occur in predictable sleep cycles that can be

measured with an electroencephalograph, known more commonly as an EEG During wakefulness, the waves are recorded at

about ten small waves per second, but with the onset of sleep, the waves become larger and slower The largest, slowestwaves occur during the first three hours of sleep when mental activity slows down but does not stop In fact, if awakened

from slow-wave sleep, a person can often remember vague thoughts that occurred during that period of sleep, but the sleeper

does not generally dream Referred to as NREM or non-REM sleep, it is characterized by large, slow waves

During sleep, intervals of small, fast waves also occur in patterns similar to those experienced while awake The eyes move

rapidly, and it appears to the observer that the sleeper is watching some event Sleepers who are awakened during this eye-movement sleep will often recall the details of dreams they have been having Sleep of this kind is called dreaming sleep

rapid-or rapid-eye-movement sleep, also known as REM sleep REM sleep is emotionally charged The heart beats irregularly, andblood pressure may be elevated In contrast, the body is so still that the dreamer may appear to be paralyzed

In a period of eight hours, most sleepers experience from three to five instances of REM sleep Each instance lasts from five

to thirty minutes with an interval of at least ninety minutes between each one Later instances of REM sleep are usually oflonger duration than are instances earlier in the eight-hour period

Since people who suffer sleep deprivation experience fatigue, irritability, and loss of concentration, we must conclude that

sleep is essential because in some way it regenerates the brain and the nervous system NREM sleep increases after physical

exertion, whereas REM sleep tends to increase after a stressful day Studies suggest that non-REM sleep may be especiallyhelpful in restoring muscle control, whereas REM sleep may be more important in revitalizing mental activity It appears thatboth kinds of sleep are necessary, and the recuperation of sleep of one kind will not compensate for a lack of the other kind ofsleep

(Adapted from "Barron’s Practice Exercises for the TOEFL, 6th edition")

Question 43: What is the author's main purpose in the passage?

A To discuss the two types of sleep B To recommend an increase in the number of hours of sleep

C To describe REM sleepD To explain sleep deprivation

Trang 4

Question 44: The word "vague" in paragraph 1 could best be replaced by

Question 45: Which response is NOT typical of REM sleep?

Question 46: The word "it" in paragraph 4 refers to

Question 47: The word "essential" in paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to

Question 48: The author mentions all the following as characteristics of REM sleep EXCEPT

A eye movements B vague thoughts C smaller brain waves D dreams

Question 49: How many times per night do most sleepers experience REM sleep?

Question 50: It can be inferred from the passage that students who are writing term papers

A can stay up all night working and recover the sleep they need by sleeping for a few hours the next afternoon
