CE 5327 - GEOTECHNICAL PRACTICE FOR WASTE DISPOSAL Homework Assignment # 2 (Due Tuesday, February 08, 2005) 1. Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) of 1976 applies to solid wastes as well as hazardous wastes but the requirements that apply to the management of each of these categories are very different. Show in the form of a flow chart, the checks that you would perform to determine whether a given waste stream is a hazardous waste or a non-hazardous solid waste. 2. US EPA uses an approach that combines the use of listings as well as criteria for the identification of hazardous wastes. Listings, once again can be broadly classified into two categories: (a) Listings of generic waste streams and (b) Listings of hazardous chemical compounds. Rate these 3 mechanisms for hazardous waste identification with respect to the following: (a) Ease of implementation (b) Equitable Treatment (c) Technical Correctness (d) Does not need frequent updating (e) Provides incentive to generator to reduce hazardous nature of waste stream For rating purposes use a scale G-Good, F-Fair and P-Poor. 3. EPA hazardous waste listings includes (a) wastes from non-specific sources (F codes) and (b) wastes from specific sources (K codes). Differentiate between these two categories and using examples of each to support your answer. 4. (a) What four characteristics did EPA use in its definition of hazardous wastes? Provide two example waste streams that belong to each of the four categories. (b) What is meant by Toxicity in the toxicity criteria? How is it determined? Compare the maximum contaminant concentration from a TCLP Test with the drinking water standards? Do you see any relationship between the two? .
