Group 3 Hue, 4/2010 LESSON PLAN + Lesson: Unit 4: Special Education, Period 5: Language focus + Class details: Grade 10 + Aim: to help ss to learn and practice the structure “Used to + Inf”. + Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to: - make sentences with the correct form of Used to. - use Used to +inf to talk about their past habit. + Materials: textbook, posters, pictures, gifts. Time Stage Steps/Activities Work arrangement 5 I. Presentation → to help ss familiar with the form and usage of Used to +inf 1.Setting the scene: * Scene 1: (using 2 pictures- Appendix A). + Situation 1: There is a man in the picture 1. His name is Nam. Five years ago, he often smoked a lot. His habit was smoking, smoking and smoking. But, now he has problem with his health (T shows pictures 2). He has lung cancer. And the doctor asks him to stop smoking. + T asks ss : -“What did he often do 5 years ago?” and - “How is he?” + T elicits the marker sentence 1: 1. He used to smoke a lot. * Scene 2: (using 2 pictures- Appendix B). + Situation 2: There is a girl in picture 3. This girl is my friend. Her name is Na. She is now a teacher. So, she often goes to school by motorbike. But, 2 years ago, she was a student at Hue College of Foreign Whole class + S answers: - “He often smoked a lot”. - “He has lung cancer”. She used to go to school on foot. * T builds up the form: He used to smoke a lot. She used to go to school on foot. Used to + inf + T gives the meaning of the form: We use Used to + inf for things that happened regularly in the past, but don’t happen at present. 2.Concept checking: - T asks the following questions to check ss’ understanding about the form and the usage of the structure: + After Used to, can we use a gerund or to inf? + Can we use Used to + inf to talk about things that happen at present? + Whole class: “No, she doesn’t”. - S answers: “No, we can’t” - S answers: “No, we can’t”. 15 II. Practice → To help ss to be able to use the form Used to + inf accurately. 1. Activity 1: Play game NOUGHTS AND CROSSES: (using a grid: Appendix C) - T gives instruction of the game briefly: We have a grid with 9 cells in which we have 9 verb phrases. You will choose a phrase and make a sentence with the given phrase in that cell. If you get three-in-a row (across, down, or diagonally), you will be the winner. - T checks ss by asking the following sentences: Group work, pair work and individual work - S answers: + How many verb phrases do we have? + How many sentences do we make? + Who will be the winner? - T divides class into 2 teams and starts the game. - T calls one student to choose number and make sentence. Then, his/hers team say loudly that sentence. - T listens to ss’ sentences and corrects if ss make any mistakes. - If there is any three-in-a row (across, down, or diagonally), T decides which team is the winner and congratulates the winner. 2. Activity 2: Complete sentence: - T asks ss to make sentences beginning with “When I was a child, I used to …” in pair to talk to ss’ friend what they used to do when they were children in 5 minutes. - T asks ss the following questions: + “What should you do now?” + “How many minutes do we have to work in pair?” - T gives some examples to ss: + When I was a child, I used to go fishing with my father. + When I was a child, I used to go shopping with my mother and my elder sister. - T gives 5 minutes to ss to work in pair and + 9 verb phrases. + 9 sentences. + If I get three-in- a row (across, down, or diagonally), I will be the winner. -S answers: +“I have to make some sentences to talk to my partner about what did I often do when I was a child beginning with “When I was a child, I used to …” + “in 5 minutes” goes around to help them with their work. - T calls some ss to read aloud their sentences in front of class. - T listens and gives feedback to ss. - Ss give their sentences. 15 III. Production -> Aim as helping ss to use the structure fluently and more confidently in free way. 1. Setting the scene: (using poster- Appendix D) - T tells ss her own story about meeting an old friend: “I had a close friend. Her name was Huong. We all lived together in Hue city. But 5 years ago, her family moved to Ho Chi Minh city and we lost contact with each other since then. Accidentally, one day I went to the supermarket and met her there. I was so surprised and we had a wonderful talk together. I saw that Huong has changed”. - T sticks poster on the board and explains something about it (to see how Huong has changed now). 2. Activity 3: Roleplay - T requires ss to work in pairs again. (Do not need to count because they have already had their pairs from the previous activity). - T explains in details what ss have to do: +Ss imagine they are the characters in the story and make a dialogue. They can use some suggestions on the board. +Check: “What should you do now?” +T reminds ss that they have to use the structure used to+inf +Ss have 5 minutes to prepare this work. After 5 minutes, T will call some pairs to go to the board and play their roles. + T says she will give the present for the first Pair work +S answers: “I have to imagine I and my friend are the characters in the story and then make a dialogue”. pair. + Check: “How long does it take you to prepare this work?” - T gives model to ss (a dialogue in appendix E) - During 5 minutes: T goes around the class, takes note students’ mistakes. - 5 minutes later: + T invites the first pair to go to the board and play their roles and asks the rest to take note their mistakes. + T and the whole class give correction to the first pair. Then, T & the whole class give congratulation to them.
