Articles hold your text content, together with any pictures or media files you have attached. The look and feel of your web site is largely influenced by your site administrator’s fluency with the Article Manager and the associated parameters. Using the Article Manager The Article Manager provides access to all the articles in your system, as well as the tools to create new articles and to copy, move, edit, delete, and archive them. Taken all together, this is one of the most powerful and most important screens in your Joomla! system. To view the Article Manager, either click the icon of the same name on the control panel, or select Article Manager under the Content menu on your main admin nav bar. In either event, the Article Manager opens in your web browser, as shown in Figure 5.8. The toolbar at the top of the Joomla 1.5.x Article Manager provides quick access to the following functions: l Unarchive: Select one or more archived articles from the list and then click this icon to unarchive them. l Archive: Select one or more active articles from the list and then click this icon to archive them. l Publish: Select one or more articles from the list and then click this icon to publish them. l Unpublish: Select one or more articles from the list and then click this icon to unpublish them. Part II: Working with Content and Users 92 l Move: Select one or more articles from the list and then click this icon to move the items into a different category. l Copy: Select one or more articles from the list and then click this icon to make copies of them. l Trash: Select an article from the list and then click this icon to move the article to the Trash. l Edit: Select an article from the list and then click this icon to edit the article details. l New: Click to add a new article. l Parameters: Click to edit the Global Article parameters. l Help: Click to access the online Help files related to the active screen. FIGURE 5.8 The Article Manager interface in Joomla! 1.5.x, showing the default sample data installed. Below the toolbar and above the list of articles are five sorting and searching tools to help you manage long lists of articles: l The Filter field on the left works like a search box. Type a word or phrase into the field and then click Go. The page reloads and displays the results of the search. To clear the screen and return to a full listing, click the Reset button. Chapter 5: Managing Content 93 l The Select Section filter enables you to filter and display the articles according to the sec- tion to which they are assigned. To reset this filter, change the combo box back to the default setting. l The Select Category filter lets you to filter and display the articles according to the cate- gory to which they are assigned. To reset this filter, change the combo box back to the default setting. l The Select Author filter enables you to filter and display the articles according to the author associated with them. To reset this filter, change the combo box back to the default setting. l The Select State filter on the far right allows you to filter and display the articles according to whether they are published or unpublished. The filter provides an easy way to identity all articles that are currently active on the site. To reset this filter, change the combo box back to the default setting. The main content area of the screen contains a list of all the articles in your Joomla! site. The col- umns provided are: l # : An indexing number assigned by Joomla! This cannot be changed. l Checkbox (no label): Click a radio button to select an article; this is needed if you wish to use several of the toolbar options, referenced in the preceding list. l Title: This field displays the full name of the article. Click the name to edit the article. l Published: A green checkmark in this column indicates the publication state of the article. As indicated by the legend that appears at the very bottom of the Article Manager, the icon that is displayed indicates the publication state. You can click the icon to publish or unpublish the article, depending on its state: l A yellow dot beside an Article icon indicates the article is approved and scheduled for publication but is pending. l A green checkmark beside an Article icon indicates the article is currently published. l A red circle with an X beside an Article icon indicates the article was published but has expired. l A red circle with an X in it (without an Article icon) indicates the article is neither published nor scheduled for publication. l A gray circle with a crossbar (without an Article icon) indicates the article is archived. Tip If you hover the cursor over the Published icon, the system displays the article’s start and stop publication dates. l Front Page: A green checkmark in this column indicates that the article is assigned to appear on the front page of the site. A red circle with an X in it indicates the article is not assigned to the front page. Click the icon to toggle between the two states. Part II: Working with Content and Users 94 l Order: The number indicates the order of the article, relative to the other articles. You can reorder the articles by either clicking the green arrows to move an item up or down in the order, or by entering numbers for the order and then clicking the save icon at the top of the column. l Access Level: Shows the access level set for that article. Click the name of the category to open the category editing dialogue. l Author: Shows the name of the author of the article. Click the name of the author to open the User editing dialogue for the author. l Date: Shows the date the article was created. l Hits: Shows the number of times the article has been viewed. Tip You can change the result shown in the hit counter by changing the value in the parameter in the Article Edit dialogue. l ID: The system-generated user ID number. This is used internally by the system and can- not be changed by the user. Finally, at the bottom of the screen, below the content area, is the Display # option. Change the value in the combo box control to alter the number of articles that are displayed on the page. The default value can be altered by changing the List Length option on the Global Configuration Manager. Creating articles New articles are created by clicking the New icon on the toolbar at the top right of the Article Manager. Clicking the New icon opens the New Article dialogue, as shown in Figure 5.9. The toolbar at the top of the New Article dialogue provides quick access to the following functions: l Preview: Click to open a lightbox showing how the article will appear to a site visitor. Note that the article does not appear inside your site’s page template; the only way to see the article inside your site template is to publish it and view it from the front end. l Save: Click this icon to save your work, create a new article, and exit the New Article dia- logue. l Apply: Click this icon to save you work without exiting from the New Article dialogue. l Cancel: Cancels the task and exits the New Article dialogue. l Help: Click to access the online Help files related to the active screen. Chapter 5: Managing Content 95 The fields in the workspace are: l Title: Type in this field a name for the article. The value in this field will be used as the article’s title. This field is required. l Alias: Enter an alias for the system to use internally for this article. Note that this field only accepts lowercase letters without spaces. At the time of article creation, much of this information will be blank. FIGURE 5.9 The New Article dialogue in Joomla 1.5.x. Note that many of the parameter options are repeats of the same choices available in the Global Article parameters, or in the Menu Item Type parameters. The settings you indicate in the Article parameters will take precedence over other parameter settings, thereby allowing you to tailor the display of individual articles. Global parameters The Global Article parameters are accessed by clicking the Parameters icon on the Article Manager toolbar. Clicking the icon causes a menu to appear, as shown in Figure 5.10. Set the options you wish; then click the Save button to set the changes and close the pop-up window. Options set through the Global parameters controls apply to all articles in the system, unless they are overridden by the individual article’s parameters. Note Where there is a conflict between the Global Article Parameters and the individual article parameters, the set- tings in the article parameters are applied by the system. Chapter 5: Managing Content 97 FIGURE 5.10 The Global Article Parameters pop up in Joomla! 1.5.x. The default value is Never. Any time you provide an opportunity for users to input HTML into your site, you create the possibility that harmful, or even malicious, code can find its way into your system. In order to help prevent this from happening, Joomla! has added content filtering to the system. The filtering works by assessing the HTML that is input by the users and checking it against a black list to see if the code is permitted. Joomla! provides content filtering in the default system and applies it to all users except for the Super Administrator. The default settings can be overridden by the Filter parameters contained in the Global Article Parameters, discussed previously. The default Joomla! system includes a pre-determined Black List that contains the following tags: applet, body, bgsound, base, basefont, embed, frame, frameset, head, html, id, iframe, ilayer, layer, link, meta, name, object, script, style, title, and xml. The Black List also excludes the following attributes by default: action, background, codebase, dyn- src, lowsrc. Through the Global parameters, you can either add new terms to the Black List or you can create a White List that specifically allows certain elements to be used. The parameters also give you a way to specify which users will be subject to the controls. Note that setting a control for one user group auto- matically sets that control for all children user groups.
