CHAPTER 1 : INTRODUCTION

1 PROBLEM STATEMENT :

Depression is a common mental health problem in medicalstudents worldwide the associstion between depression and motivation in Vietnamese medical students is not well-documented There is a rapidly grrowing public awarenessof mental health problem among Vietnamese secondảy school students This study aims to determine the prevalence of axnisty , depression , and suicidal ideation ,

Trang 6

to identify related risk factors , and to explore students own proposals for imporving their mental health.According to the results of ( Us national library of Medicine National of health ) published online 2019 Aug 20 A cross-sectional study was conducted on medical students with clinial experience at HMU from November 2015 to january 2016 We used the multistage cluster random sampling technique to select and invite students to complte a questionnaire including demographic

characteristics , Pantient Health Questionnaire 9 ( 9) , Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) , and

PHQ-INTERNATIONAL physical Activity Questionnaire Short From (IPAQ)

Among 494 participants (78.8% response rate), the prevalence of self-reported depression was 15.2% (95%CI:12.0%-19.0%), and suicidal ideation was 7.7% (95%CI:6.2%-9.5%) Self-reported depression was significantly associated with perceived financial burden,

physical inactivity, being senior student, perceived negative influence of night shifts, and non-self-determined motivation profile Suicidal ideation was significantly associated with perceived financial burden and non-self-determined motivation profile In the multivariable regression models, significant risk factors for self-reported depression were non-self-determined motivation (PR = 2.62, 95%CI:1.68–4.07), perceived financial burden (PR = 1.95, 95%CI:1.39–2.73), and vigorouslevel of physical activity (PR = 0.43, 95%CI:0.20–0.942) For suicidal ideation, non-self-determined

Trang 7

motivation (PR = 2.33, 95%CI:1.13–4.80) and perceived financial burden (PR = 1.91, 95%CI:1.16–3.13) were significant risk factors.

6 RESEARCH CONTRIBUTION

1) Acadamic contributions-It generalizes the level and hazards of psychological

illness such as : age , harm , cause , measure , etc , … to help people get a better sense of the 4.0 disease It lets you refer to the completion of the course and lectures in other subjects

2) Practical Contributions

-Given incorrect data demonstrate the extent of the danger These spoken word numbers are also a warning about a potentially rejuvenating cause of suicide

7.STUCTURE OF THESIS

Chapter 1 : General introdution to the

topic of research Data on depression in medical students And the cause , the impacts , the solution that we have

Chapter 2 : Models of research and concepts of depression

Chapter 3 : Research processes and research methods are instruments to survey medical students This is intended to identify the number of students with depression in stages of

Trang 9

the disease and to give effective meassures for themost majority of students.

Chapter 4 : The synthesis from this

study gave us a better perspective on era 4.0 disease and could suddenly appear and face you

CHAPTER 2 : LITERATURE REVIEW

1.WHO’S DEFINITION OF DEPRESSION :

-“Depression is a common mental disorder characterized by sadness , loss of interest or pleasure , feelings of guilt or self – degradationn , sleep disorders or eating , and poor concentration.”- Depression can last or recurrent repeatedly ,

significantly reducing your ability to work , study ,or cope with everyday life In the worst case , depression can lead to suicide At a slight level , treatment may be provided without medication At a moderate and severe level , patients should beassisted with medication in combination in combination with a psychological approach 2.GROUND THEOIES

- The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) started as the Theory of Reasoned Action in 1980 to predict an individual's intention to engage in a behavior at a specific time and place The

Trang 10

theory was intended to explain all behaviors over which people have the ability to exert self-control The key component to this model is behavioral intent; behavioral intentions are influenced by the attitude about the likelihood that the behavior will have the expected outcome and the subjective evaluation of the risks and benefits of that outcome

- The TPB has been used successfully to predict and explain a wide range of health behaviors and intentions including smoking, drinking, health services utilization, breastfeeding, and substance use, among others The TPB states that behavioral achievement depends on both motivation (intention) and ability (behavioral control) It distinguishes between three types of beliefs - behavioral, normative, and control TheTPB is comprised of six constructs that

collectively represent a person's actual control over the behavior

3 THE GENERAL

- According to Wikipedia :  The diagnosis of depression is based primarily on

the experience the patient has , and therefore the

Trang 11

mental condition will be tested There is no laboratory test , but the test can be performed to exclude physical conditions that could cause the same symptoms People with severe depression are often treated with counseling and

antidepressants These drugs are pretty effective , but there aren’t too many effects on people with more severe disease froms off counseling used include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal communication therapy , and electroshock therapy that can be considered if other measures are ineffective May need admission to hospital In cacses where there is a risk of self hram and may sometimes go contrary to one’s wishes

 The most common onset of depresssion is between the age of 20 and 30 , for women with depression twice as frequently as men Severe depression affects an estimated 163 milion people (2% of the world population) in 2017 The percentage of people who suffer from depression at a time in their lives vaies from 7% in Japan to 21% in Frace Longer survial rates with this condition in the developed world (15%)

Trang 12

are highẻ than in the developing world (11%) This disorder caused the second yeas of a condition after lower back pain

4.PREVIOUS STUDIES

- According to central psychiatric hospital , up to 30% of the 5000 people who show signs of anomalies are students According to surveys conducted by TW Children’s Hopital in some schools , up to 20% of students exhibit anxiety , mental disorders , or depresssion And this number has a growing trend over time.- A survey of 1727 students in lower sencondary

school in Ha Noi found that 25.76% of students had mental health problems And 20.65% of first– graders have middle school axniety , where the class knowledge test is the largest cause - That is the figure for students and for students ,

some rêcnt students have shown this currents genneration of studnets a very high risk forr anxiety and depression This is mainly due to thefact that they are not prepared for students life , and their financial and job opportunities are reduced Students of depression are also affected

by substance abuse , drugs , unhealthy lifestyle …

5.THE SYNTHESIS OF INHERITANCE ELEMENTS

- The major causes of depression in students :1) Pressure to take exams , study

2) Unhealthy living habits in students 3) Lack of caring family and friends 4) The financial problems

7.THE RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

1) H1 - Pressure to take exams , study : Not surpringly , these are signs and major causes of depression for medical students today When enrollment is over and psychology is not ready To them they’re the cause of the disease Depression is also known as Blackdog You canappear at any time and suffer It stresses each person emotionally when you’re depression.2) H2 - Unhealthy living habits in students : A

common cause forr all students – not just medical students This is negative side to

LACK OF CARINGFAMILY AND FRIENDS

THE FINANCIALPROBLEM

students , as most laeve their families for a life of independence When no one else reminds themsevles to become automatically siturbed into bad habits , such as staying up late , smoking , drinking , etc , … causing themsevlesto feel the fatigue and fatigue so long that they are depression.

3) H3 - Lack of caring family and friends : As noted above , prompt attention is mising All humanss are going to end up all alone When there is no one to keep them company to tell thewhole story , they can just hide it inside In the long run when confronted with loved ones they just want to hide the loneliness the have experience When they’re not free of mood and emotions , which are the exact oppsite for what they seem to be an open – minded person.4) H4 - The financial problem : The necesary

reasons for the study of medical students vary from 4 – 7 year on average In general , it’s not enough to provide forr your family to stay on the road to college Schoolmates who have neither work nor school can earn money from part – time jos And learning ability may and

Trang 16

difficulty in concentrating at school Headachesthink about how to make your lifestyle

comfortable and eaduce family pressure This isa very large and aesy cause for the Blackdog to appear as likely

8.SUMMARY OF CHAPTER - The content presents problem that surround the major cause of depression in medical students today These are major and easy causes as well Not only medical students but students under these pressures They need attention and encouragement from relatives more than ever before Those are all known facts about depression

CHAPTER 3 : THE RESEARCH METHOD AND RESEARCH PROCEDURES

1. RESEARCH PROCESS

Mental health literacy (MHL) refers to a person's understanding and views regarding mental illnesses, which can help with diagnosis, treatment, and prevention The goal of this study is to look at

Trang 17

the MHL of depression among undergraduate public health and sociology students in Hanoi, Vietnam Survey methods taken between May and September of 2015 An anonymous, self-

administered questionnaire was sent to 350 undergraduate students to collect data (213 public health majors; 137 sociology majors) The Australian National Survey of Mental Health Literacy and Stigma was used to develop questionsregarding MHL of depression Recognizing depression, seeking assistance, first-aid support, and understanding of depression treatments were among the subjects included in the survey For numerous variables, Chi squared tests were used tocompare proportionate statistics between

groups. Results showing that the profile of mental disrorders, 32.0 percent of respondents correctly labeled the vignette as "depression." 82.1 percent of individuals who properly recognized depression would seek treatment Those who did not recognizedepression accounted for 81.1 percent of the total Counselors, psychologists, family members, and close friends would be sought out by both groups Both sets of responders recommended informal

Trang 18

sources for first-aid assistance (to listen to her problem in an understanding way, to encourage herto be more physically active, etc.) Self-help methods such as learning to relax, being physicallyactive, exercising first thing in the morning, and reading a self-help book were the interventions thatrespondents found most beneficial Those who did not recognize depression thought that people with depression should be admitted to a hospital for psychiatric treatment (p 0.05), whereas those who correctly identified depression thought that personswith depression should be admitted to a hospital for psychiatric treatment The conclution suggests that (MHL) is needed for education on depression for university students in Viet Nam And

disseminate information to parents so as to get more focus on the health of studens or on depression themselves

- The study was conducted throuh two main phases : The preliminary study mistakenly obtains the general results then fromal research to assess the extent and risk of depression among medical students2.RESEARCH PROCESS

- The qualitative : U.S.National Library of Health

Survey based on medical students at the University of HaNoi Medical School (HMU) in terms of the percentage of students involved had a mild to severe disease

incidence - Quantitative method : Data is an unlimited division from high school students to college medical students

- Among 350 students who completed the questionnaire, 213 (60.9%) were public health students and 137 (39.1%) were sociology/social science students The majority of respondents were female (76.6%) Most students were living with housemates (51.4%), with parents (35.1%),and the rest were living with relatives, by themselves, with acquaintances or with

- It summarizes the research process of the project , the source of the data in the study , to provide results on the risk of depression And depression is a disease to dealwith as these getting younger.

“ Stress” was the most common answer in both groups of students (49,1 %) The percentage of students who correctly identified the problem as depression was 32.0% ( n = 112 )
