INTRODUCTION
Good afternoon, everyone, we are group 9 First of all, let me thank you all for coming here today and
we are very happy to be here to present our topic “Challenges in mastering a new language” There
Trang 2are five members in our group: Lê Công Anh, Lê Ngọc Hải Anh, Nguyễn Phương Anh, Phạm Thị Mai Anh, Trần Hồng Đăng Our presentation includes three parts The first part is about “Definition of challenge, the importance of mastering a new language” The second part discusses “Some challenges
in mastering a new language” And, the final part mentions “Some solutions”
BODY/ DEVELOPMENT
1 The first part is about “Definition of challenge, the importance of mastering a new language” Definition of challenge:
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, the challenge is (the situation of being faced with) something that needs great mental or physical effort in order to be done successfully and therefore tests a person's ability Besides, challenge is a new or difficult task that tests somebody’s ability and skill, as maintained by Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries
The importance of mastering a new language:
We live in a multilingual world, where connections are now more important than ever The world is becoming increasingly globalized and mastering a new language can always give you an unfair advantage A new language can drastically change your career Living in an interconnected world means that more and more jobs are advertising positions where knowing more than one language is essential Besides having more chances of landing a good job or advancing in your career, knowing a new language can also give you an insight into other cultures You will be more prepared and confident to travel the world and explore other people’s ways of living Lack of integration is a real problem for most countries More often than not, this is due to the language barrier People outside of their home countries end up being isolated, hanging out only with people from similar communities where their language is spoken Mastering a new language opens up the opportunity for being part of a community with a different culture, and learn more about the world around us Basically, the advantages of mastering a new language have the ability to set you up for success in nearly every aspect of your life Moreover, mastering the English language is especially important
English is the most widely spoken language in the world It is the official language of 53 countries and is spoken as a first language by around 400 million people It is also the most common second language One out of five people can speak or understand English There are actually more people in the world that speak English as a foreign language than people who speak it as their native language Because English is a common language around the world, it connects people They will use English as a shared speech to communicate with each other So it acts as a bridge between people A
Trang 3high level of English makes traveling easier Not only can you interact with people, but many signs and information boards are often translated into English Announcements on flights or at train stations
in many large cities are provided in English So it really does help to understand this universal language
If you only watch, read or listen in your own native language, you limit the amount of material available to you And translations miss much of their original expression Mastering native language will help broaden your knowledge and experience You will have much wider access to entertainment Most of the world’s top films, television, and music are produced in English You won’t need to rely
on subtitles or dubbing When an English movie is dubbed into another language, it loses its original character When you watch them in authentic English, you can understand and experience more of the different cultures And it is also a fun way to learn the language Besides, most content on the internet
is written in English, so you will be able to read and enjoy much more online And you will be able to take part in forums and discussions, leave comments and reach a much wider international audience It
is important to listen to the local news But you will broaden your knowledge and understanding of the world by reading and listening to English-speaking articles, news programs and radio too So you will have access to much more information when you master English
English is the main language of business Being able to speak provides more opportunities for work and study to lead to success Studying abroad is a great way to meet people and experience their cultures while you learn And make valuable international contacts in the area you are studying If you want to study in another country, thousands of schools around the world offer courses in English With English fluency, you have the chance to study at some top schools around the world This can then help in your career when you return home or wherever you wish to go English is the language of medicine, science, and technology English is important in these professions and many others too Companies are becoming more international and use English to communicate on a global scale So they need fluent English employees to speak and connect with clients and partners in different countries Mastering English will also help if you need to do research for work or sell things to people
in different countries If you gain the skill for English language teaching, you can find work anywhere It is also very important in tourism You will be much more likely to get a job in a hotel or restaurant if you speak English
Staying at home, knowing only your own culture and habits will close you off to amazing experiences and chances to learn about other people and yourself too When you learn English and speak it well enough to immerse yourself in another country’s way of life, you learn about different cultures and habits This experience will help you grow as a person You will become more
Trang 4understanding and more accepting It is so important to share with and accept other cultures and their ways, to help the world be a better place And English can help you to do that in a very positive way When you are in a foreign country, it can be hard to adjust and feel at home You can always find someone who speaks your language to be friends with; this is true But English can help you to connect with more people; to broaden your possibilities of finding like-minded people You will have
a better chance to find people with similar hobbies and the same interests
Learning any language is good for you, to grow and be a better person by learning and experiencing more English can help you with this and more When you start learning English, it may seem challenging at first But you will soon realize that compared to other languages, English is much easier to learn It is based on a simple alphabet, and many of the words originate from other languages including Latin, French and Spanish This makes it easier for some people to pick it up Because learning the English language is easier for many people than other languages, it feels very satisfying
as you are able to make good progress It is also good for your brain Knowing a second language keeps your brain young and healthy It is actually a work out for your brain so it will stay strong and more active as you age. When you master English and can speak it fluently, you can communicate more difficult ideas You can fully express opinions in lots of situations So you will not be left out and can join in any English conversation You will have more freedom and independence because you won’t have to rely on anyone to help you in translating You will not have to depend on anyone to be with you to help understand and manage everyday activities
2 The second part discusses “Some challenges in mastering a new language”
Lack of confidence
The challenge when mastering a new language is not being confident when communicating in this language For those who are new to one language, there will be many surprises and mistakes Learners are often afraid of not pronouncing correctly, using incorrect words, so they often hesitate and lack confidence when speaking a new language Gradually this mentality will form in you a negative belief that you cannot speak well It is not maintaining the habit of using a new language that also makes you afraid to speak, more afraid to communicate They also often feel embarrassed when they hear their own voice, worry when they don't understand other questions by this language or can't memorize vocabulary, grammar during the learning process Another reason why they feel inferior when communicating in a new language is not receiving encouragement from those around them When making mistakes in communication, people do not encourage but also laugh at them, making them feel more self-deprecating and unwilling to learn to communicate A large part is also due to their introverted and shy personality, so they are afraid to speak and communicate in front of crowds
Trang 5No specific goals
Having a clear goal when learning a new language is a key strategy for many people's success One of the biggest obstacles to learning a new language is not having a clear goal Without a goal, it will be difficult for us to follow the set plans to succeed
The goal of learning a new language is the driving force that motivates us to transform what
we have learned and practiced into knowledge Many learners work very hard with homework and practice but don't make much progress That's because they lack the element of commitment This commitment comes because they have clearly defined their goals In addition, your new language learning goals must be compatible with/support your core values Otherwise, these goals won't work because you're plotting things you really don't want to do Setting goals is so important The first, goals help you define what you want to achieve It will be difficult to achieve success if you do not define what your "success" is Setting goals for learning a new language will help you clearly define what you want to achieve so that you can start working towards it Secondly, goals help you focus on the important things Learning a language requires understanding with millions of different grammar, vocabulary and literary knowledge chemicals.By focusing on smaller pieces of knowledge, you will progress faster and gain real, tangible skills Thirdly, goal setting is a way to measure your progress, keep you motivated, and learn more It takes a long time to master a language, and it's frustrating to spend it Spending a lot of time on something that seems to get nothing in return By setting goals, you can determine the progress you are making And you'll be comfortable with what you're doing
Not focus on one language at a time
Trying to learn some languages at a time can often be overwhelming As you further develop
in learning new language, focus on one language at a time, you stay focused so you don't get distracted by worrying about lots of things to learn in the future
3 The final part mentions “Some solutions”
We all want to be better at something After all, self-improvement is necessary to getting ahead at work But once you know what you want to be better at — be it public speaking, using social media,
or analyzing data — how do you start? Of course, learning techniques will vary depending on the skill and the person, but there are some general rules you can
Know how you learn best
Some learn best by looking at graphics or reading Others would rather watch demonstrations or listen
to things being explained Still others need a “hands-on” experience Someone says you can figure out your ideal learning style by looking back
Trang 6Get the right help
Eliciting support from others can greatly increase learning Find someone you trust who has mastered the skill you’re trying to attain And look beyond your immediate manager who has to evaluate Then approach that person and say something like, “You are so comfortable with [the skill], something I’m not particularly good at I’m really trying to work on that and would love to spend some time with you, learn from you, and get your feedback.” If you can’t find a mentor inside your company, look for people in your industry or from your network
Start small
Self-improvement can feel overwhelming Instead, choose one or two skills to focus on at a time, and break that skill down into manageable goals For example, if you’re trying to become more assertive, you might focus on speaking up more often in meetings by pushing yourself to talk within the first five minutes
Reflect along the way
To move from experimentation to mastery, you need to reflect on what you are learning Otherwise, the new skill won’t stick Talking about your progress helps you get valuable feedback, keeps you accountable, and cements the change
Challenge yourself to teach it to others
One of the quickest ways to learn something new, and to practice it, is to teach others how to do it So share what you learn with your team, your manager, or your co-workers You can force yourself to do
it by putting a “teaching” date on your calendar or agreeing to lead a formal training session a few months down the road With objectives like those, your learning will be much more focused and practical
Be patient
The reality is that it takes much longer “It’s not going to happen overnight It usually takes six months or more to develop a new skill,” says Weintraub And it may take longer for others to see and appreciate it
So, in conclusion, to mastering new skills or language, we should
Do:
Trang 7● Select a skill that is valued by your organization and manager
● Divide the skill up into smaller, manageable tasks
● Reflect on what you’ve learned and what you still want to accomplish
Don’t:
● Try to learn in a vacuum — ask others for guidance and feedback
● Rely solely on your boss for advice — you may want to involve someone who isn’t responsible for evaluating you
● Assume it’s going to happen overnight — it usually takes at least six months to develop a new skill
CONCLUSION
Now, just to summarize, let’s quickly look at the main points again
The first, “Definition of challenge, the importance of mastering a new language”
The second, “Some challenges in mastering a new language”
And, the final, “Some solutions”
