in the extreme northeast of the Indochina Peninsula, between the South China Sea and theCentral Highlands, Vietnam's strategic location has given rise to a captivatingenvironment with a wide range of terrains, stretching from picturesque coastlines toverdant plateaus Over its extensive history, Vietnam has navigated through variousepochs, from the era of the Red River Delta to the rule of the Hung Kings, and enduredcenturies of wars against foreign invasions Vietnamese culture is adorned with a mosaic
of heritage, featuring non-European cultural gems such as Ha Long Bay, the ImperialCity of Hue, and the Ancient Town of Hoi An
Vietnam is globally renowned for its sophisticated and diverse culinary offerings.Delightful specialties like Bun rieu, Pho, Banh mi, and tempting seafood dishes such asNem nuong have captured the palates of food enthusiasts worldwide With a population
Trang 6exceeding 90 million people, Vietnam boasts ethnic diversity, creating a cultural mosaicadorned with traditional customs and festivals The official language is Vietnamese Inrecent years, Vietnam has experienced rapid economic innovation and development, particularly in the realms of cultural integration and language evolution.
English has become a compulsory subject for students Given the rise of social networksand media, the importance of using English in international communication has becomeparamount Proficiency in English is not only advantageous for thriving in aninternational work environment but also plays a pivotal role in personal growth andcareer development Those with strong English skills tend to have more opportunities injob searches, career advancement, and taking advantage of international learning andtraining opportunities
Following that development, I am enrolled in the English language program at UNETIUniversity, with the ambition of becoming an English teacher During my internship atSolar English Language Center, I noticed variations in the teaching methods employed byforeign and Vietnamese English teachers Subsequently, I conducted research to analyzeand compare these distinctions This report will delve into the identified differences

Chapter 2: Internship description 2.1 The difference in the teaching approaches of foreign teachers and Vietnamese teachers at Solar English Language Center
2.1.1 Theoretical background
2.1.1.1 Definition of teaching approaches
Teaching approaches refer to the methods, strategies, or philosophies that educators use
to facilitate learning and instruction in the classroom These approaches guide the overallstructure of lessons, the interaction between teachers and students, and the way content ispresented and assessed Different teaching approaches are often based on educationaltheories, learning styles, and the goals of the educational system [1]
Each subject, each country, each teacher has different teaching methods These methodsalso depend on the learner and the teaching environment
2.1.1.2 Definition of foreign teachers
Trang 12The Longman Dictionary of Applied Linguistics defines a native speaker of a language assomeone for whom that language is their mother tongue According to the LongmanDictionary of Applied Linguistics, a mother tongue is the language that 'a person acquires
in early childhood and that is used in the home and/or is the language of the countrywhere the person lives' (p 188) [2]
Native teacher (or native speaker teacher, often referred to in English as NEST – NativeEnglish Speaker Teacher) is someone who speaks the language as their first language and
is often employed as a language instructor to impart language skills to learners So, native
or expatriate teachers are those who are born and raised in English-speaking countriessuch as the UK, Australia, the US, or Canada (English-speaking region since birth) andthose who have immigrated to these countries for many years Of course, this excludesindividuals who, for some objective reasons, do not use the language of the country theyare currently residing in In practice, we still observe some overseas Vietnamese who, despite having lived in the United States for many years, are unable to speak Englishfluently This is because their daily communication is limited to the Vietnamesecommunity in the region where they live
2.1.2 DISCUSSION
Trang 13Undoubtedly, it cannot be denied that English serves as an excellent tool not only fornavigating life but also for facilitating global integration Since Vietnam officiallybecame a member of the WTO, the demand for English usage has become more crucialthan ever.
English is now prevalent at all levels, ranging from early childhood education, schoolstudents, and university students to professionals in the workforce The reality indicatesthat employing foreign teachers for direct English instruction is a common practice inlanguage centers and both public and private English education systems nationwide. There are various opinions regarding the use of foreign or Vietnamese teachers in Englishteaching, sparking debates on which method is more effective In this report, I will showyou the difference in the teaching approaches of foreign teachers and Vietnameseteachers in Solar English Language Center
2.1.2.1 Teaching approaches of foreign teachers
The primary advantage of foreign teachers lies in their language proficiency, specializedknowledge, and their ability to use English in various contexts This is the most crucialfactor that gives foreign teachers a distinct edge over their local counterparts Apart frombeing exposed to English from an early age, foreign teachers are trained in acomprehensive system and curriculum at prestigious institutions They absorb the mostmodern and effective English teaching methods worldwide
Therefore, foreign teachers can instruct learners at all levels, from children to adults, including students, professionals, and those learning English for purposes such asstudying abroad or settling in a foreign country
With their high level of expertise, understanding of vocabulary, and English grammar, foreign teachers can effectively address most inquiries during the English learningprocess
Learning English with a foreign teacher inevitably involves making some basic mistakes. However, there is no need to overly worry or fear this, as being afraid of making mistakescan hinder your English progress Moreover, during the English learning journey, teachers will correct even the smallest errors
Trang 14might mispronounce due to the influence of Vietnamese pronunciation, offeringassistance to help learners correct these errors.
Moreover, subjects such as English-Vietnamese and Vietnamese-English translation areusually not undertaken by foreigners because most of them do not know Vietnamese orhave limited proficiency In such cases, Vietnamese teachers become the top choice. The final advantage of Vietnamese teachers is their deep understanding of students andthe assessment methods in Vietnam As a result, they can tailor teaching methods to suittheir students, enhancing their proficiency while guiding them to obtain Englishcertificates
2.1.2.3 Native teachers and Vietnamese teachers – Who is better?
It would certainly be inadequate to compare native English teachers and Vietnameseteachers of English directly From the analysis above, we can observe that the strengths
of native teachers are the weaknesses of some Vietnamese teachers, and conversely, theadvantages of Vietnamese teachers present challenges for foreign teachers wheninstructing English in Vietnam
So, to harmonize and balance the strengths and weaknesses of both foreign andVietnamese teachers, Solar English Language Center has combined them together For
Trang 15example, in a week with four English lessons, Vietnamese teachers will handle 2sessions, primarily focusing on clarifying students' questions regarding new vocabularyand grammatical structures Foreign teachers will take the remaining 2 sessions, primarilyassisting students in correcting pronunciation errors and enhancing communication skills.Along with the foreign teacher, there will be a Vietnamese teaching assistant to teach andsupport them.
Through this combination, students at Solar English Language Center can solidify theirunderstanding of grammar while gaining confidence in speaking and communicating inEnglish
