II What is Technology?

According to Wikipedia, Technology is the skills, methods, and processes used

to achieve goals The word has been in use since the 17th century

People can use technology to: produce goods or services, carry out goals, such

as scientific investigation or sending a spaceship to the moon; solve problems, such asdisease or famine; or do things we already do, but more easily

Technology can be knowledge of how to do things Some machines haveautomatic controls This lets others use the machines without knowing how they work.Technological systems use technology by taking something, changing it, and thenproducing a result They are also known as technology systems

Generally, Technology is the application of technical and scientific knowledge

to design and create objects so that some human activities are more comfortable toperform, faster, cheaper, or even more environmentally sustainable

B The development of technology

I Major milestones in the history of technology.

Throughout the process of human technological development Beforetechnology, about 3 million years ago, people knew how to create rudimentary tools, create fire and stone objects to help make hunting and gathering life easier Therehave been many things developed, invented, and improved, and our group has pointedout four typical industrial revolutions as follows:

Steam engine:

James Watt improved the steam engine in 1765 It started around the mid-18thcentury and lasted until the mid-19th century it also enabled the transition fromartisanal production to industrial production, using machines and steam engines Theemergence of machine and chain manufacturers has enhanced performance

Electric motors and assembly lines:

It started after the 19th century and lasted until the 20th century (and itdeveloped even more during the World War)—the development of steel andelectricity industries, innovations in production, and transportation management.Industrialization is extensive and greatly affects sectors such as the petrochemicalindustry, automobiles, and aviation

Era of computers and automation:

We are beginning in the late 1950s and lasting into the 21st century Theemergence of information technology and telecommunications, high-end automation, and the development of electronic technology This revolution changes the way wework, communicate, and consume information

Digital technology revolution:

It started in the late 20th century and is continuing today, combining thephysical and digital worlds, including developments in artificial intelligence, theInternet of Things (IoT), machine learning, and intelligent automation This revolution

is creating major transformations in manufacturing, services, and the way we interactwith the world around us

II Notable breakthroughs and advancements

As for technological advancements, let's discuss the outstanding breakthroughs and advances:

The light bulb :

Before Thomas Edison, many others tried incandescent lamps or bulbs He isconsidered the inventor (in 1880), but it was not exactly so, he improved on theinnovations of others in electric lighting, such as Humphry Davy, Matthew Evans,Warren de la Rue, or Joseph Wilson Swan (with the latter Edison disputed the title ofinventor) It is considered the greatest invention since the discovery of fire: lightentered homes and workplaces, becoming a necessity and an engine for economicgrowth (working hours were extended, electricity generating plants and householdappliances were developed, among other advances)

The telephone :

The Scotsman Alexander Graham Bell worked as a speech and hearing expert(his mother and wife were both deaf) and, seeking to improve the telegraph, researched voice transmission until, in 1876, he patented the telephone This devicerevolutionized communication by allowing instant speech even over long distances Inits early days, to establish a call, a person had to manually connect the wires, and thiscontinued until the creation of the telephone network It is one of the most significantadvances of the Second Industrial Revolution, to the extent that it marks the beginning

of modern society Without it, the world would not exist as we know it today: it laidthe foundations for mobile telephony

The aeroplane :

In 1903, the Wright brothers created the first human-piloted motorizedairplane, the Wright Flyer The flight lasted only 12 seconds, but with this experiment, which defied gravity, they laid the foundations of aeronautical engineering Theirdesigns inspired others to develop commercial aviation In 1927, Charles Lindberghbecame a hero for his non-stop crossing of the Atlantic This technological ingenuityboosted trade, culture, and tourism, and, today, the air transport industry is key toglobal economic prosperity

Trang 7

The personal computer :

Computers have redefined people’s lives and the way they work, simplifyingtasks, storing information, and processing data quickly and efficiently The invention

of the transistor or semiconductor in 1947 began the road to personal computers Thiscomponent replaced the vacuum tube and was the key to creating smaller, morereliable electronic devices John Blankenbaker’s Kenbak-1 is considered the firstpersonal computer Another key innovation in the development of the PC (personalcomputer) was microprocessors (1971)

The first personal computer with a microprocessor was the Micral (1973) Although it was never sold, the Xerox Alto (1973) was the forerunner of home computing: it introduced a graphical interface and a mouse In 1975, the Altair 8800 was launched, the first computer with the Microsoft Basic programming language, developed by Bill Gates and Paul Allen, founders of Microsoft

Internet :

As with most technological inventions that have changed the world, the birth ofthe network of networks would not be understood without earlier experiments andtechnologies The connection of four university computers to ARPAnet in 1969 wasthe seed for the birth of the Internet In the late 1970s, Vinton Cerf developed the

“transmission control protocol” or TCP for sending files between computers Thisbreakthrough was key to Tim Berners-Lee’s introduction of the World Wide Web in

1991, transforming society It continues to evolve today, bringing new forms ofinteraction and economic, social, and cultural growth The launch of Telefónica’sInfovía service in 1995 popularised the Internet in Spain and introduced it intoSpanish homes

The mobile phone :

In 1983, the first mobile phone small enough to be portable was launched:Motorola DynaTac 8000X, designed by engineer Martin Cooper, with a 30-minutebattery life The first generation of mobile phones was only for talking, but as itevolved, the terminals provided new functions, such as sending SMS or email, pavingthe way for smartphones capable of browsing the internet, capturing photos, listening

to music, guiding via GPS or updating social networks, among many other functions

Trang 8

Today it is one of the essential technological inventions in personal and professionallife.

Artificial intelligence :

The precursor of modern computing, Alan Turing, is also the father of artificialintelligence However, the term was not coined until 1956, when the first artificialintelligence program, Logic Theorist, was presented at a historic conference Today, this technological invention has crept into our lives in the form of chatbots, voiceassistants, autonomous vehicles, real-time translators, artificial vision, ChatGPT, theInternet of Things… Machines capable of reasoning will further transform the world

of the future with applications and uses that we cannot even imagine today.Generative artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly important

I The contribution of technology to human lives

In today's era, technological advancements have brought significant changes inhow we move and interact with transportation systems One of the most importantimpacts of technology is the enhancement of efficiency Technologies such as GPSnavigation systems, traffic management systems, and data analytics have improvedroute optimization and traffic flow, reducing congestion and travel times.Additionally, vehicle automation, including self-driving vehicles and automatedsystems for tasks like parking and lane-keeping, promises to increase safety, reduceaccidents, and improve overall efficiency

Moreover, Technology has driven the development of alternative fuels andenvironmentally friendly powertrains, such as electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cells, and hybrids, providing cleaner and more sustainable options compared to traditionalinternal combustion engines Integration of technology into transportationinfrastructure, such as smart traffic lights, dynamic toll pricing, and intelligenttransportation systems, has enabled better management of traffic flow and utilization

of infrastructure

Trang 10

In Vietnam, there is also has Cat Linh - Ha Dong metro line Unlike powered trains, electric trains produce zero emissions during operation, helping toreduce air pollution and mitigate the impacts of climate change This aligns withVietnam's commitment to sustainable development and environmental conservation, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment for present and future generations.

diesel-It is undeniable that technology continues to play a pivotal role in shaping thefuture of transportation, driving improvements in efficiency, safety, sustainability, andaccessibility

is possible for students to learn from anywhere in the world through online coursesand virtual classrooms This has made education more accessible and affordable formany people Especially, the role of technology in the COVID-19 pandemic in thefield of education has been significant Due to social distancing measures, educationalinstitutions worldwide were off However, technology has enabled remote learning tocontinue Many video-calling platforms now allow students to join their classes fromhome such as Zoom, Google Classroom, and Microsoft Teams have been usedextensively for virtual classrooms, video conferencing, and online assignments

In addition, Technology empowers individuals to take control of their learningjourney, enhancing their knowledge and skills autonomously It is clear that Studentsare no longer only reliant on their institution teachers Many of the top teachers have aYouTube channel where they upload videos that students from all around the worldcan learn from

Trang 11

Furthermore, Technology has made learning more interactive and engagingthrough the use of multimedia tools such as videos, animations, animation, 3D visuals, simulations and other media This has helped students to understand complex conceptsmore easily and make learning more enjoyable For example, the majority ofclassrooms are equipped with multimedia projectors Multimedia projectors candisplay images and videos on a large screen make lessons more participatory andenjoyable for students.

3 Technology in Healthcare

Technology has improved significantly in the last ten years It appears thatalmost everything can be accomplished with the simple press of a button This isespecially true in the medical field Doctors can now do surgeries using technologythat was not even available a decade ago Technology has made it easier for doctors todiagnose and treat patients

As providers continue to expand their uses of Healthcare technologies, keybenefits are realized across different sectors of Healthcare Below we dive into three

of the top benefits of technology in healthcare, and what you can do to begin reapingthe rewards of innovation for your patients

One of the most widespread uses of Technology in healthcare is the adoption ofelectronic health records (EHR) EHRs make patient health information instantlyaccessible to providers and patients by supporting automated workflows betweenpeople and technologies

Patients don’t need to call the doctor’s office to learn their test results—they cansimply review their EHR on the patient portal Care teams can coordinate decision-making using the same up-to-date information And administrative staff spend lesstime shuffling paperwork and making phone calls to exchange information Thechallenge around EHRs is portability Many Technology providers are beginning torecognize this problem and offer EHR integrations that allow for easier adoption ofnew technologies

The next thing is about healthcare access, one of the main barriers to quality care.Cost, distance, and physical limitations often prevent patients from receiving the carethat they need, leading to delayed treatment Disadvantaged populations areparticularly affected, and providers can offer solutions that help them reap the benefits

of technology in healthcare
