Scientists have identified two ways in which species disappear The first is through ordinary or
"background" extinctions, where species that fail to adapt are slowly replaced by more adaptable life forms The second is when large numbers of species go to the wall in relatively short periods of biological time There have been five such extinctions, each provoked by cataclysmic evolutionary events caused by some geological eruption, climate shift, or space junk slamming into the Earth Scientists now believe that another mass extinction of species is currently under way – and this time human fingerprints are on the trigger
How are we are doing it? Simply by demanding more and more space for ourselves In our assault on
the ecosystems around us we have used a number of tools, from spear and gun to bulldozer and chainsaw Certain especially rich ecosystems have proved the most vulnerable In Hawaii more than half of the native birds are now gone - some 50 species Such carnage has taken place all across the island communities of the Pacific and Indian oceans While many species were hunted to extinction, others
simply succumbed to the "introduced predators' that humans brought with them: the cat, the dog, the pig,
and the rat
Today the tempo of extinction is picking up speed Hunting is no longer the major culprit, although rare
birds and animals continue to be butchered for their skin, feathers, tusks, and internal organs, or taken as
savage pets Today the main threat comes from the destruction of the habitat of wild plants, animals, and insects need to survive The draining and damming of wetland and river courses threatens the aquatic food chain and our own seafood industry Overfishing and the destruction of fragile coral reefs destroy ocean biodiversity Deforestation is taking a staggering toll, particularly in the tropics where the most global biodiversity is at risk The shinking rainforest cover of the Congo and Amazon river basins and such place as Borneo and Madagascar have a wealth of species per hectare existing nowhere else As those precious hectares are drowned or turned into arid pasture and cropland, such species disappear forever

of the most colorful ceremonies is the festival of "Eunoto," when the teenage boys of the Masai become men
Eunoto lasts for many days and Masai people travel across the region to get to a special place near the border between Kenya and Tanzania The teenage boys who travel with them are called "warriors." This
is a traditional name from the past when young men fought with other tribes
At the beginning of the ceremony, the teenagers paint their bodies while their mothers start to build a place called the "Osingira," a sacred room in the middle of the celebrations Later, the senior elders from
different tribes will sit inside this place and, at different times, the boys go inside to meet them Later in
the day, the boys run around the Osingira, going faster and faster each time
The teenagers also have to alter their appearance at Eunoto Masai boys' hair is very long before the
ritual but they have to cut it off In Masai culture, hair is an important symbol For example, when a baby grows into an infant, the mother cuts the child's hair and gives the child a name At a Masai wedding, the hair of the bride is also cut off as she becomes a woman And so, at Eunoto, the teenage boy's mother cuts his hair off at sunrise
On the final day, the teenagers meet the senior elders one more time They get this advice: "Now you are men, use your heads and knowledge." Then, people start to travel back to their homes and lands The teenagers are no longer warriors They are adult men and now they will get married and have children

Nepal has made important progress over the past few years to promote equality, but the country still has one of the highest rates of child marriage in the world 41% of Nepalese girls are married before the age
of 18
Poverty is both a cause and consequence of child marriage in Nepal Girls from the wealthiest families
marry 2 years later than those from the poorest, who are seen as an economic burden, and who drop out
of school and earn little money
Food insecurity plays an important role, too Nepalese families that do not have enough food to eat are more likely to marry their daughters at a young age to decrease the financial burden One study shows that 91% of people who had secure access to food married over the age of 19
Dowry is also common practice in many communities Parents marry their daughters as soon as possible because the money they have to pay to the groom's family is higher if their daughter is older Since 2010, the legal age of marriage is 20 for both men and women, or 18 with parental consent, according to the Nepalese Country Code
The law states that punishment for child marriage is imprisonment for up to three years and a fine of up
to 10,000 rupees (£102) But reports suggest that this law is rarely applied There has been quite a lot of
progress in Nepal over the past 3 years with a clear government commitment to ending child marriage
and civil society cooperation The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare is currently developing Nepal's first national strategy on child marriage in collaboration with UNICEF
Nepal and Girls Not Brides Nepal However, the post-earthquake and post-fuel crisis environment has meant progress is slow and the national strategy has been delayed
(Adapted from http://www.girlsnotbrides.org/)

Think about the last test you took How much of what you learned for the test do you still remember? Many people take tests to pass a course or get a promotion, but they often forget the information afterward This is especially the case for people taking large international tests like TOEFL or IELTS These tests usually involve multiple-choice questions, and people often study to increase their scores, not
to learn important information In fact, educators are divided on whether these kinds of tests are the most
effective way to assess a person's abilities
Those who support such tests say they are the only way for educators and employers to compare people
based on their test scores However, there are people trying to reform this system They believe that
standard tests aren't the best way to measure a person's ability These reformers also believe that intelligent people are not always good at taking tests or memorizing facts A multiple-choice test cannot always tell what people have learned, or whether they can apply that knowledge in the future
Reformers believe that other types of evaluation achieve better results Tests that contain a mix of written and spoken questions give a more complete assessment of what the person is capable of A portfolio, or a collection of work done throughout a course, can show how much the student has improved individually Group interview, where a group of people are interviewed at the same time, can also be useful for employers, since they show how people interact with others
Alternative educational institutions such as Montessori and Waldorf schools don't believe that
education should be focused on testing At these schools, the classroom is very relaxed and "free" with students learning from each other as much as they learn from teachers Some of these schools even allow students to choose what they study Teachers create activities designed to let students show their abilities
or knowledge of a certain subject In these schools, the focus is on learning by experiencing and doing things
The debate on testing continues, and educators have yet to find a perfect method of evaluating learning Until that day comes, old test methods will be used and new test methods will continue to develop But one thing's for sure, testing will continue to play an important part in our lives - so study hard!

A How useful test scores are
B Whether testing is an effective method to assess learners
C The importance of taking TOEFL or IELTS

Trees are useful to man in three very important ways; they provide him with wood and other products, they give him shade, and they help to prevent drought and floods
Unfortunately, in many parts of the world man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important In his eagerness to draw quick profit from the trees, he has cut them down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had
Two thousand years ago a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire It gained the empire but without its trees, its soil became hard and poor When the empire fell to pieces, the country found itself faced by floods and starvation
Even though a government realizes the importance of a plentiful supply of trees, it is difficult for it to persuade the villager to see this The villager wants wood to cook his food with, and he can earn money
by making charcoal or selling wood to the townsman He is usually too lazy or too careless to plant and look after trees So unless the government has a good system of control, or can educate the people, the forests will slowly disappear
This does not only mean that there will be fewer trees The results are even more serious For where
there are trees their roots break the soil up, allowing the rain to sink in and also bind the soil, thus
preventing it being washed away easily, but where there are no trees, the soil becomes hard and poor The rain falls on hard ground and flows away on the surface, causing floods and carrying away with it the rich topsoil, in which crops grow so well When all the topsoil is gone, nothing remains but a worthless desert

Many universities around the world are proud to have long histories and strong traditions However, very few universities can claim to be among the oldest in the world
Nalanda University, in Bihar, India, was established around 600 BC It was most likely the world's first
university In the past, scholars came from Europe, China, and all over India to learn about science,
medicine, the Buddhist religion, and other subjects The university is in ruins now, but at one time it was
an impressive school with temples, classrooms, libraries, and dormitories
Trang 23According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the University of Al-Karaouine in Fes, Morocco, is
the oldest surviving university in the world It was probably founded in 859 and became a famous place
to study natural sciences The first university in Europe is definitely the University of Bologna, in Italy It was one of the few universities in Europe that were not influenced by religion Professors were forbidden from teaching outside the university, and so students came from all over Europe to study with its famous teachers

Los Angeles dancer, Brian Perez, was eating out with his friends one evening when suddenly everyone went quiet To his horror, he saw that the reason for this was that people were checking their phones Realising he had to do something to stop this, Brian made a rather daring suggestion What if they all put their gadgets in a pile in the middle of the table until they had finished the meal? If anyone picked up their phone, that person would have to pay the whole bill And so, it is said, the game of 'phone stacking' was bom
The necessity for action like this highlights a major problem in today's society: our inability to
disconnect from technology But while Brian's idea deals with the obsession in a social context, measures also need to be taken at home Some people drop their smartphones into a box the moment they arrive home, which gives them the chance to interact with the people they live with The fact that the phone cannot be heard - it is on silent - nor seen - the flashing lights are hidden by the box - means that they are
no longer tempted to use it
A less drastic solution is to ban electronic devices at certain times of day when the whole family is
likely to be together, for example at meal times This can be hard for everyone, from teenagers desperate
to text friends to parents unable to switch off from work On a normal day, however, dinner takes less than an hour, and the benefits of exchanging opinions and anecdotes with the rest of the family certainly makes up for the time spent offline
Taking a break from technology is one thing, but knowing when to turn off a device is another Time seems to stand still in the virtual world, and before you know it, you find that it is three o'clock in the morning This is where a digital curfew comes in handy, a set time when all devices must be put away Evenings without technology are usually nice and peaceful and make a more agreeable end to the day And then it's time for bed One of the best ways of ensuring you can sleep at night is to ban electronic devices altogether from the bedroom Lying next to a machine bursting with information is far from relaxing, and the sounds it emits during the night can easily wake you up With technology out of the

The pursuit of fame has never been more popular than it is today Where fame was once reserved for the most gifted artists in the entertainment industry, these days it seems that anyone from a reality TV contestant to an online video blogger can become famous
Most talent show contestants and video bloggers are young people with little or no idea about how to
handle fame They can struggle to cope with the sudden glare of the spotlight Then, as their new-found
fame ends and the public's attention turns elsewhere, these fading stars often struggle to readjust to normality
However, hanging on to fame has its own pitfalls Fame brings a loss of privacy as a star's life becomes
the subject of media attention and, sometimes, cruel rumour This can have a serious effect on their friendships
People who desire fame have to be prepared to live their life under a microscope Fame may build confidence, but it can also destroy this confidence, bringing insecurity, depression and loneliness
It is important to put human emotions and relationships before fame because, after all, fame does not bring happiness The bright lights of fame have blinded many wannabes who, later, end up feeling lonely and confused Fame is fleeting for most people, but the real world is lasting for everyone

Like many constructions, it started small; but now thousands of children with autism are making friends and learning social skills by playing a version of online building game Minecraft Stuart Duncan, a web developer in Timmins, Canada, got the idea through a popular blog he ran about his own experiences with autism as well as bringing up a son with autism Other parents with autistic children started telling him
that their kids were enamoured with a game that let them explore a randomly generated wilderness
However, many of the children were being bullied by other players So, in 2013, he set up a server to run
a version of Minecraft exclusively for children with autism and their families
At first, he thought the invite-only server would attract 10 or 20 people To his amazement, hundreds requested to join in the first few days Now, almost three years later, the community boasts nearly 7000 members, along with a team of admins help manage its many activities "Parents see such a benefit themselves and their children," says Duncan
Trang 294
Everyday social situations can be challenging for autistic children, who may struggle to pick up on social cues or understand another person's perspective Minecraft strips away the pressures typical of the real world There is no noisy or unfamiliar environment to distract you, no pressure to track the other person's facial expressions or worry about eye contact "With Minecraft, you can really just be yourself,"
he says
To join Autcraft, you must fill out an application Once approved, you are free to roam the landscape and build your own structures You can also take part in group games or build things as a team However, you have to stick to some rules Harassing other players or destroying their property can get you banned Joining a community like Autcraft could be a good first step to feeling less socially anxious and more engaged, says Elizabeth Laugeson, director of the PEERS Clinic at the University of California, Los Angeles The server also caught the eye of Kate Ringland at the University of California, Irvine She sees Autcraft as not just another online community, but as a tool that helps autistic children practise social skills "There's a lot of reflection going on," she says "Autcraft is supporting a lot of social behaviours."

Advertising helps people recognize a particular brand, persuades them to try it, and tries to keep them loyal to it Brand loyalty is perhaps the most important goal of consumer advertising Whether they produce cars, canned foods or cosmetics, manufacturers want their customers to make repeated
purchases The quality of the product will encourage this, of course, but so, too, will affect advertising
Advertising relies on the techniques of market research to identify potential users of a product Are they homemakers or professional people? Are they young or old? Are they city dwellers or country dwellers? Such questions have a bearing on where and when ads should be played By studying readership breakdowns for newspapers and magazines as well as television ratings and other statistics, an advertising agency can decide on the best way of reaching potential buyers Detailed research and marketing expertise are essential today when advertising budgets can run into thousands of millions of dollars
Trang 33Advertising is a fast-paced, high-pressure industry There is a constant need for creative ideas that will establish a personality for a product in the public's mind Current developments in advertising increase the need for talented workers
In the past, the majority of advertising was aimed at the traditional white family - breadwinner father, non working mother, and two children Research now reveals that only about 6 percent of American households fit this stereotype Instead, society is fragmented into many groups, with working mothers, single people and older people on the rise To be most successful, advertising must identify a particular segment and aim its message toward that group
Advertising is also making use of new technologies Computer graphics are used to grab the attention
of consumers and to help them see products in a new light The use of computer graphics in a
commercial for canned goods, for instance, gave a new image to the tin can

Of all modern instruments, the violin is apparently one of the simplest It consists in essence of a hollow, varnished wooden sound box, or resonator, and a long neck covered with a fingerboard, along which four strings are stretched at high tension The beauty of design, shape, and decoration is no accident The proportions of the instrument are determined almost entirely by acoustical considerations Its simplicity of appearance is deceptive About 70 parts are involved in the construction of a violin Its tone and its outstanding range of expressiveness make it an ideal solo instrument No less important,
Trang 36however, is its role as an orchestral and chamber instrument In combination with the ger and deep sounding members of the same family, the violins form the nucleus of the modern symphony orchestra The violin has been in existence since about 1550 Its importance as an instrument in its own right dates
from the early 1600's, when it first became standard in Italian opera orchestras Its stature as an
orchestral instrument was raised further when in 1626 Louis XIII of France established at his court the
orchestra known as Les vinq quatre violons du Roy (The King's 24 Violins), which was to become
widely famous later in the century
In its early history, the violin had a dull and rather quiet tone resulting from the fact that the strings were think and were attached to the body of the instrument very loosely During the eighteenth and nineteenth century, exciting technical changes were inspired by such composer-violinists as Vivaldi and Tartini Their instrumental compositions demanded a fuller, clearer, and more brilliant tone that was produced by using thinner strings and a far higher string tension Small changes had to be made to the
violin's internal structure and to the fingerboard so that they could withstand the extra strain
Accordingly, a higher standard of performance was achieved, in terms of both facility and interpretation Left-hand technique was considerably elaborated, and new fingering patterns on the fingerboard were developed for very high notes
Question 44: All of the following are mentioned in the passage as contributing to the ability to play

English teenagers are to receive compulsory cooking lessons in schools The idea is to encourage healthy eating to fight the country's increasing obesity rate It's feared that basic cooking and food preparation skills are being lost as parents turn to pre-prepared convenience foods
Cooking was once regarded as an important part of education in England -even if it was mainly aimed
at girls In recent decades cooking has progressively become a minor activity in schools In many cases
the schools themselves have given up cooking meals in kitchens in the schools But the rising level of obesity has led to a rethink about the food that children are given and the skills they should be taught "What I want is to teach young people how to do basic, simple recipes like a tomato sauce, a
bolognaise, a simple curry, a stir-fry, which they can use now at home and then in their later life”, said
Ed Balls, the minister responsible for schools
The new lessons are due to start in September, but some schools without kitchens will be given longer
to adapt There is also likely to be a shortage of teachers with the right skills, since the trend has been to teach food technology rather than practical cooking Also the compulsory lessons for hands on cooking will only be one hour a week for one term But the well-known cookery writer, Pru Leith, believes it will
be worth it
"If we'd done this thirty years ago we might not have the crisis we've got now about obesity and lack
of knowledge about food and so on Every child should know how to cook, not just so that they'll be healthy, but because it's a life skill which is a real pleasure"
The renewed interest in cooking is primarily a response to the level of obesity in Britain which is among
the highest in Europe, and according to government figures half of all Britons will be obese in 25 years if current trends are not stopped
