attitudes of the first-year students at FFL, UTEHY in listening skill via TED Talks, the effectiveness of using TED Talks in learning listening skill and the way using TED Talks in enhancing listening skill because listening skill is the most important skill for students in learning English as well as their future job The results of the study, in summary, were quite positive in finding that the students have good attitudes to learning listening skill via TED Talks This study also shows some difficulties of the first-year English major students at UTEHY encounter in learning listening skill when they learn through TED Talks and the result of this study also shows that the effectiveness of using TED talks and also shows the first–year students’ perception about using TED Talks in learning listening skill Participants of this study consist of 111 first-year English major students of Languages Department A mixed method was used to collect quantitative and qualitative data The students’ responses make the paper more clearly However, the students have encountered a number of difficulties during the implementation of the process, so suggestions and recommendations have been investigated so as to deal with the problems After studying, researcher find that the students are very interested in using TED Talks in learning listening skill And some suggestions are given such as how to with TED Talks in language learning Though the limitations have been inevitable, the study is expected to be beneficial the students, and researchers of the related subjects iv TABLE OF world Vietnam is a developing country and it is also in the process of international integration, so English plays an important role Although English is not the most spoken language in the world, it is the official language in 53 countries and is spoken as a first language by around 400 million people worldwide But that’s not all, it is also the most common second language in the world According to the British Council, by 2020 about two billion people in the world will be studying English We cannot deny the usefulness that English brings to all of us It is connected with the process of globalization, it also makes a contribution for the development of the global economy and English helps people in everywhere closer and closer English is used in every field and in every aspect of our life English language demands both in daily and business communication Political, economic, scientific, sports life of the whole world is in English too It is also the language of the media, the internet or international trade, banking system, activity of transport on the land, on the sea and in the air is carried out in English If you know English, you will give yourself many chances of getting a good job or studying aboard In Vietnam, English becomes a compulsory subject in all levels In English, there are four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing But listening is the most significant skill It is the factor that has a huge impact on other skills Moreover, it is necessary for English learners to improve their ability to understand the content of their conversation and help them success in real life At Hung Yen University of Technology and Education, especially the first-year students in Faculty of Foreign Language, their listening skill is still limited There are some main reasons that make students feel difficult in learning listening To listen English well, it needs many factors such as vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar,… So, listening is considered as the most difficult skill Nobody can communicate fluently in English without listening well At Hung Yen University of Technology and Education (UTEHY), the firstyear students at the Faculty of Foreign Languages said that they are worried about their 29 have many difficulties This depends on the learning force as well as the initiative in the learning process Therefore, in the questionnaire, researcher allowed students to choose many answers when asking questions about the difficulty of learning to read in order to have the most accurate data for the research Thirdly, the survey also shows the advantages of TED Talks in enhancing listening skill for the first-year English major students at UTEHY TED Talks (TED Talks videos and TED Talks app) are useful technology that can help them deal with the difficulties in learning listening skill Except improving the listening’s ability, they can enhance other skills such as reading, writing, speaking Moreover, the other advantage which is quite important and proves “TED Talks are useful technology for learning English” is enhancing knowledge about every fields such as Technology, Science, Art,… The more they watch TED Talks, the more they open their knowledge and improve all their English skills Finally, there are some suggestions recommended in order to ease students' difficulties All students need a lot of efforts Most students thought that choosing suitable English videos to current English level, improving knowledge about society, culture, as well as grammar structures is very important Besides, correcting pronunciation and rehearing are good ideas for learning listening skill All students have their own options to suit their English proficiency and level Solution to improve listening skill for the students via TED talks According to the result of questionnaire and interview, there are some advices to students to overcome the main hindrances and help students when using TED Talks in learning listening skill 5.1 Improving grammar and vocabulary via TED talks Grammar is a language’s structure It is also a necessary and important factor in listening comprehension In TED Talks video or TED Talks app, it converges many experts who are good at English and good at particular field These speakers are skilled in using many different grammar, use words sensibly put them When you listen to TED Talks videos, you can write everything down on your notebooks to learn and you can improve listening speed because you can change spokesperson’s speed depend on your level 30 Like grammar, vocabulary in TED Talks is used in the context very flexibly and correctly In English, it is different between specialized terms and vocabularies and daily vocabularies If you use all your available vocabulary in casual communication to listen the specialized words, you cannot hear well, but you can use TED Talks TED Talks is a good choice because there are many topics, fields such Education, Medical, Science, for you to choose if you use it When you want to listen on TED Talks videos or app, you need a notebook because any words is shown but you don’t know, you can stop videos or rewind several times to remember how these words pronounce and write them down and translate, then test yourself on how many of them you can remember Many students realize that learning listening skill is very difficult if their vocabulary is very limited because lack of vocabulary or wrong pronunciation makes listeners misunderstand or not understand what the speakers want to impart This is reason why increasing vocabulary is also one of the essential ways helping students improve their listening skill And TED Talks are useful method for you 5.2 Improving knowledge of topics via TED Talks TED (Technology - Entertainment - Design) is a mass media organization, specializing in posting talks, allowing to watching online for free, with the message of "Ideas worth spreading" With Over 30 years of development and development, TED has successfully organized more than 1500 talks, organized more than 6000 events around the world from outstanding experts in different fields The image, voice and spirit of TED are the cross-cutting values that they want to spread to all communities so you can freely choose the topics that you are interested This also helps you enhance your knowledge quickly 5.3 Practicing listening as much as possible on TED Talks videos or app Ted Talks are an effective English learning application It allows users to use it for free and indefinitely You only need a smartphone and internet network, you can listen and study anywhere, anytime English learning through TED Talks has many different speaking speeds that will help you to pick up the language easily and you can listen to it over and over again In addition, there is a huge amount of knowledge on TED Talks you choose and learn that will help you feel interested in learning English TED Talks videos or 31 the app has a notification mode for the user This helps learners improve their selfawareness and practice every day English listening habits 5.4 Improving listening skill through TED Talks with eJOY app As English learners, you might find it familiar watching video TED Talks on YouTube TED Talks have always been great resources to help us improve English And one technology which can help you learn English with TED Talks videos on your mobile phone effectively is eJOY app However, not everyone knows how to use eJOY app by the right way So in this part, some steps will help you know how to use it best Step 1: Choose the right TED Talks Why: This step will help you pick the talks that suit you The best videos for you should be of your favorite topics and learning purpose How: • Open eJOY app on your phone • Search for a video: There are a few options for you to choose from: + On eJOY’s search box, search for a video by entering keywords and filtering your topics, levels (for example, TED Education) + You can also access the eJOY Courses “TED Talks” to find a video of your choice + Use YouTube Connect to convert a TED Talks video on YouTube to eJOY Step 2: Watch the video with English subtitles Why: Watching the whole video once or twice will help you have a general idea of what the talk is about How: • Watch the video with English subtitles or subtitles in your mother tongue • Pause to look up and save any new words Step 3: Split the video into small pieces and watch the most preferred one Why: According to many language experts, working with short clips is more effective than working with long ones In addition, you’ll be able to focus entirely on your favorite parts instead of the whole long video How: 32 • • Re-watch your favorite parts and remember their subline number Use the Cut a Clip feature, choose the start time and end time of the split part of the video • When practicing your English with videos or movies, we always suggest working with a short video clip of no more than three minutes A one minute piece is even better • Watch the newly-split clip a few times and don’t forget to look up new words Step 4: Play games with the clip Why: This step will help you practice your listening and speaking skills in depth How: Choose any game to begin with Below is our suggestion: - Activity 1: Active Listening Active listening is a combination of comprehension listening and bottom-up listening (listening for details or focused listening) This method of listening will focus on language forms at the word and sentence levels • Listen to each dialogue carefully (you can listen to it as many times as you want) • Repeat the dialogue when the video is paused • Check your results when the subtitles are displayed - Activity 2: Listening Quizes Quizes will allow you to practice your active listening through word recognition and sentence completion • Listen to each dialogue line • Use the - correct words/ phrases to complete the sentences Activity 3: Do Shadowing Based on the shadowing technique, we design the Shadow game to help you practice your speaking skills • Listen to each dialogue line • Click on the record icon (the micro icon) to start recording your voice • Click again to stop recording • Our latest speech recognition technology will analyze your speech and show you all of your pronunciation errors 33 - also practice passive listening with the clip while carrying out other 34 CHAPTER IV: CONCLUSION 4.1 Summary of the study The aim of thesis is to find out difficulties faced by first year English major students at UTEHY in learning listening skill Basing on the findings, the author offers some solutions to help the students become more advanced in learning this skill via TED Talks To achieve this aim, the researchers conduct the survey research with the participation of 111 students of campuses of Faculty of Foreign Languages at UTEHY Specially, the author studied the issues: 1) The attitude of the students towards learning listening skill, 2) Difficulties they encountered in learning listening skill, 3) The benefits that TED Talks bring to the students in order to help them enhance their listening skill and 4) What should be done to help students improve listening skill via TED Talks?
