On May 20, 1927, John Willard Marriott and his wife Alice Sheets launched Marriott in Washington, USA, starting with a nine-seat root beer bar Despite the severe economic downturn from 1929 to 1932, when many businesses were laying off workers, Marriott chose to expand by introducing the successful Hot Shoppes restaurant chain This decision marked the beginning of Marriott's exploration into modern commercial opportunities, eventually leading to a chain of seven food and beverage establishments.

Housekeeping is often referred to as the "heart of the hotel," playing a crucial role in maintaining cleanliness and aesthetic appeal throughout the property This operational department is responsible for ensuring that guest rooms, public spaces, and back areas are well-maintained and inviting While it does not directly generate revenue, housekeeping serves as a vital support function, focusing on fulfilling guests' needs for comfort and security during their stay.

The housekeeping department plays a crucial role in fostering collaboration among various departments, ensuring seamless operations that deliver high-quality service to customers.

Role and responsible

The Housekeeping department plays a crucial role in ensuring a clean and comfortable environment for guests, fostering a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere that enhances their overall experience By maintaining high cleanliness standards throughout the hotel, the department not only contributes to guest satisfaction but also enables efficient room sales, allowing for repeated bookings and maximizing profitability.

 Providing a clean, safe, and comfortable environment.

 Protecting and maintaining the cleanliness of the building and its surroundings.

 To provide friendly and courteous service.

Housekeeping plays a vital role in maintaining linen supplies across various areas such as guest rooms, restaurants, banquet halls, conference venues, and health clubs, while also managing inventory effectively Additionally, it promotes strong collaborative relationships with other departments to enhance overall operations.

Executive Housekeepers report directly to the General Manager or the Rooms Division Manager and are responsible for supervising cleaning activities within the hotel Their key duties encompass recruiting and training new staff, managing budgets, controlling costs, and overseeing daily inspections of guest rooms and overall hotel cleanliness They supervise room attendants and housekeeping staff, ensuring that cleanliness standards are met, while also arranging work schedules and providing a safe and healthy work environment Additionally, they focus on protecting hotel property and minimizing losses and damages.

The secretary reports directly to the Executive Housekeeper and plays a crucial role in hotel operations Key responsibilities include managing the cleaning, maintenance, and repair of guest rooms, supporting the Executive Housekeeper in overall management tasks, providing an updated list of available rooms, organizing staff training within the department, and overseeing the checkout process for VIP and out-of-order rooms.

The Linen and Uniform Supervisors, who report to the secretary, oversee the management of hotel linens and employee uniforms The Linen Room Supervisor is tasked with inspecting, supplying, and ensuring the cleanliness of all hotel bed linens while also supervising the ironing and laundry processes Meanwhile, the Uniform Supervisor is responsible for maintaining a stock of clean uniforms, managing inventory at various usage stages, and establishing a budget for uniform procurement and materials.

Linen attendants, under the supervision of the Supervisor, play a crucial role in maintaining cleanliness and organization in linen management Their responsibilities include sorting and arranging bed sheets, pillowcases, towels, tablecloths, and napkins into designated piles, ensuring all items are clean They also handle soiled fabrics by placing them in containers for washing, meticulously check and count each fabric item during laundry dispatch and return, and send any torn fabrics to a tailor for repair.

Laundry Supervisor is responsible for laundry operations and support for laundry manager They must be knowledgeable about all aspects of laundry equipment, chemicals and fabrics.

Ensure an ample supply of table towels, napkins, sheets, pillows, pillow covers, towels, and handkerchiefs for various hotel activities, including restaurants and guest rooms Additionally, the hotel provides laundry services for both in-house items and guests.

The Floor Manager, reporting to the secretary, is responsible for the overall condition of assigned guestrooms and areas, including corridors and staircases Key duties include issuing floor keys to room attendants, supervising cleaning operations, inspecting completed work, and coordinating tasks on the floors Additionally, the Floor Manager oversees the transfer of soiled linen to the laundry and the collection of fresh linen from housekeeping They must also alert the security department of any safety concerns and prepare housekeeping status reports, while keeping the front office informed about room availability.

The Room Attendant, reporting to the Floor Supervisor, is responsible for various essential tasks, including checking room status, preparing the housekeeping trolley, and thoroughly cleaning guest rooms They change towels, fulfill guest requests for additional items, and collect laundry Additionally, they handle lost and found items, restock supplies for the next shift, organize linen and utensils in the pantry, and report any rooms displaying a "Do Not Disturb" sign.

The public area supervisor, reporting to the secretary, is responsible for daily shift scheduling, task assignment, and oversight of public area attendants Key duties include maintaining cleanliness in all public and functional areas, monitoring for damage or theft of hotel property, ensuring proper placement of flower arrangements, conducting cleanliness and maintenance checks, and overseeing the quality control of equipment, tools, and chemicals.
