INTRODUCTION Overview of environmental problem in Vietnam’s hotels:  Manage energy waste: Energy has been and is becoming an important metric for hotels Saving energy means saving on operating costs The hotels use a lot of energy for daily activities and entertainment The high energy demand is due to the use of modern technical equipment such as air conditioners to provide comfort for a large number of guests Most hotels meet their energy needs by purchasing energy produced from burning fossil energy, such as coal, oil, etc This causes air pollution and changes the environment's temperature  Manage water uses: In the operation of the hotel, in addition to the amount of water needed for each hotel room and the usual activities at the hotel such as kitchen and laundry, some other water needs such as swimming pools, lawns, and golf courses can require a very large amount of water Excessive water use can degrade or destroy local water resources, threatening the regular supply of water for local needs These problems can be made worse in areas where peak tourist seasons coincide with dry periods  Manage sewage: Document continues below Discover more from: vụ buồng of wastewater Wastewater can be “gray HOÀN CHỈNH 41 bathrooms, and gutters, water”, which is mostly from washing machines, sinks, showers, Nghiệp vụ buồng phòng or “black water”, which is wastewater from toilets and kitchen dishwashing liquid InNone some tourist destinations, these types of wastewater receive little or no treatment Pollutants such as intestinal bacteria and chemicals are released directly into the environment Poor wastewater treatment can cause soil and surface water pollution and degradation of tourism resources  Manage waste: Hotel emits large amounts of solid waste, packaging, food scraps, and cleaning and maintenance materials, some of which are toxic In many cases, waste is concentrated in inappropriate trash cans that are not sorted in the first place or discharged directly into the natural environment Improper disposal of waste can cause soil and water pollution as contaminants seep through the piles into the ground Improperly designed landfills can cause fires, odors, fly flies, and inefficient waste storage Landfills containing hazardous materials such as paint cans and batteries can seriously contaminate water, air, and soil, threatening environmental safety and human health  Manage chemical uses: Chemicals used to clean hotel guest rooms or for recreational facilities such as swimming pools can contaminate local soil and water and may be hazardous to human health Leaks of CFCs and HCFCs from refrigerators, air conditioners, and other refrigerating equipment as well as dry cleaning chemicals, aerosols, fire extinguishers, and foams, are chemicals that contribute to ozone layer depletion  Manage purchasing problem: Hotels must purchase a very large number of goods, including supplies for laundry and sanitation, food and drink, equipment, vehicles, stationery, furniture, bedding, and guest bathroom items During production, use, and disposal, these items can cause negative impacts on the environment Product procurement decisions affect the amount of waste produced by the antibiotic as well as the potential for air, water, or soil pollution from the use or disposal of these products Reason for choosing the topic: According to the information provided in the general situation section, our team believes that activities to improve and be environmentally friendly for a hotel, particularly the room department, are necessary Because the room department is responsible for not only the customers' sleep but also their health, it should be the first place in the hotel where environmental activities are implemented However, based on the current state of affairs, Hotels in Vietnam are still not enthusiastic about this issue because environmental products or services come at a relatively high cost, which can directly affect hotel revenue However, environmental friendliness is necessary, so our group of students decided to choose this topic to find out and analyze the root of the existing problems The barriers that have been making customers hotels shy when applying activities for the environment CHAPTER 1: OVERVIEW OF HOTEL 1.1 History of establishment and development: 1.1.1 Marriott established history Figure Marriott's hall of history John Willard Marriott and his wife Alice Sheets started Marriott on May 20, 1927, in Washington, USA A root beer bar with nine seats was the first thing Marriott established in Washington, DC The United States had a severe downturn from 1929 through 1932 While businesses were laying off workers, Marriott surprised everyone by deciding to grow and launching the Hot Shoppes restaurant chain, which was equally successful Later, John Willard Marriott looked into more modern commercial opportunities He operated a chain of food and beverage establishments established in 1932, each with an entirely unique menu He rapidly established a business that specialized in in-flight catering in 1937 after sensing the need for food and drinks among passengers flying on recently established airlines In 1957, Marriott entered the hospitality industry in a momentous move The first motorized hotel in history opened in Arlington, Virginia, from 1957 to 1985, and was run by Bill Marriott, J Willard Marriott's son Over the following 25 years, Marriott developed into a diverse, international company, and Bill Marriott became its CEO, whose vision and leadership revolutionized the hospitality sector JW Marriott Jr was chosen to lead Marriott as its CEO in 1972 But then, J Willard Marriott, Sr passed away, and JW Marriott, Jr was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors in 1985 Marriott doubled its international presence after acquiring Renaissance Hotel Group in 1997 The group's goal for 2012 and beyond is to use technology and creativity to influence how people travel in the future From mobile check-in and Greatroom in the lobby to transforming the meeting experience with the Red Coat App Direct, make travel more brilliant for your guests The world's largest hotel firm, with 5,700+ properties and over 1.1 million rooms across 30 brands in over 110 countries, was created in 2016 after Marriott International purchased Starwood Hotels & Resorts Anthony Capuano (left) and Stephanie Linnartz (right) will take over as CEO and President, respectively, of Marriott International in 2021 Figure 28 Horizontal cage laundry equipment Besides, Renaissance Saigon hotel uses rainwater storage systems Rainwater harvesting cisterns are located in the terrace that capture both storm water and condensate from the mechanical equipment The water is then mixed with semi-clean water treated to rid of household sewage excluding toilet sewage This water is then reused for irrigation, toilet flushing and fire extinguishing thus eliminating the need for potable water The probable intensity of rainfall for years stands at 601.03 L/s.ha (extremely heavy rainfall equivalent to 216mm/h) which translates into the runoff of 115m3 from the roof of 1,419m2 after downpour in 25 minutes A storage tank with a capacity of around 115m3 sufficiently prevents runoff of rainwater from roof even at the time of first-ever downpour in five years to last 25 minutes 2.2.4 Sustainable Purchasing The Renaissance Riverside hotel’s good housekeeping practices and appropriately eco-friendly equipment greatly increase sustainability and reduce pollution on the property The hotel works closely with suppliers to ensure that every measure is taken regarding the purchasing of supplies These programs include: 46 • Buying locally grown food and wine products – beneficial to the local economy and aiding in the reduction of transportation costs, in turn helping to improve air quality • Purchasing non-hazardous cleaning products • Using “just in time” purchasing practices to prevent unnecessary waste • Using cloth napkins and tablecloths in restaurant • Using recyclable/reusable packaging materials for food products • Partnering with many suppliers who share their visions and have made ecological responsibility part of their culture 2.2.5 Air Quality Renaissance Riverside Saigon hotel applies some programs to protect our air They implement a no-idling policy for delivery trucks in the loading bay Also, they use water-based paints to the fullest extent possible, reducing volatile organic compound emissions Additionally, they use automatic carbon monoxide detectors and install separate ventilation for chemical storage, laundry and pool areas The hotel also use paints, adhesives, sealants, coatings that are certified for indoor air CHAPTER 3: EVALUATION & RECOMMENDATION 3.1 Evaluation:  Large amenity bottles: A typical large, pump-topped bottle contains the same amount of product as about 10 to 12 tiny, single-use bottles Because tiny bottles are not usually recycled, they end up in the hotels’ trash bins – generating refuse that will never truly decompose in landfills In addition to allowing guests to use as much of a product as they need, the larger bottles are also recyclable along with other basic containers, such as plastic soda bottles The shift will save about millions of little plastic bottles per year and reduce its annual plastic usage on amenities by 30% 47 However, refilling pump toiletry bottles has raised hygiene concerns following US research which found that one in four soap dispensers in public restrooms were contaminated with bacteria, but the study also concluded sealed systems could eliminate or considerably reduce that risk Some guests avidly collect tiny bottles of toiletries on their travels, even if they end up gathering dust in the bathroom cupboard once they get home Everybody is into sustainability, but when you go away and you're paying for it, you like a bit of luxury  Magnetic card lock: For the hotel, installing a magnetic card lock is more practical and contemporary because there is sophisticated key management software that will keep track of the number of guest rooms and the personal details of visitors In an emergency, the hotel can pull up past data on the hours that each room was open The next is security, which provides more assurance of guest safety than a mechanical lock In the event that mechanical locks are used and customers lose their keys, the hotel will need to produce new keys or install new locks Finally, staff members will need to carry a variety of keys to open each room when cleaning it To discover the right one, it takes a lot of time The room staff just requires one master card to access all rooms when using the magnetic card key, without having to remember A specialist is needed to complete the installation process since installing the door with the magnetic card lock is highly difficult Furthermore, it will be more challenging to recognize an object when the sensor surface is dusty, wet, or scraped Consequently, it is essential to periodically clean and safeguard the sensor face Additionally, recognition is more challenging when the magnetic card is put incorrectly Additionally, the system is unable to verify when the controller abruptly loses power or the identifying device malfunctions  Energy efficient LEDs bulbs: 48 Of course, one of the main benefits of adopting energy-efficient lighting is that it consumes a lot less energy than conventional lighting Making the transition to energyefficient bulbs will result in significant monthly energy savings because they use between 25 and 80% less electricity than conventional bulbs Bulb life is significantly increased with energy-efficient technology They actually have a to 25 times longer confirmed lifespan As a result, even while purchasing energy-efficient bulbs will cost more up front, you will end up saving money over time because you won't need to replace them as frequently The lifespan not only saves you money, but it also spares you the hassle of frequently changing light bulbs at your hotel Besides, traditional light bulbs use 90% of their energy to produce heat and only 10% to provide light Because energy-efficient bulbs produce less heat, they won't be scorching to the touch Cost is one of the biggest drawbacks of energy-efficient lighting The price of a compact fluorescent light bulb can range from $2 to $15, whereas the price of a 100-watt LED bulb can reach $50 Since conventional lights are far less expensive, many customers are put off by the cost of energy-efficient options  New HVAC system - split terminal heat pump (STHP): Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) technology nowadays has become increasingly sophisticated and capable of meeting not only the needs of the most discriminating traveller, but also in achieving an environmentally sustainable design The inverter-driven heat pump offers a more energy-efficient, reliable, and quieter alternative to conventional packaged terminal air conditioner and packaged terminal heat pump units STHP units can have up to a 58 percent reduction in electricity costs because they reach the set temperature faster than its PTAC counterparts and maintain the desired temperature for a longer period of time They provide up to a 21.3 SEER rating, above the Energy Star minimum of 14.5 for air conditioners The systems are a solid long-term investment proving to have 2-3 times the lifespan of most PTACs and are supported by a 10-year parts warranty, according to the company 49 However, these modern systems come with some drawback Despite the significant reduction in operating expenses, it will take a while before you recoup the initial investment People who are not tech-savvy might find the system too complex Furthermore, a smart HVAC requires frequent adjustment to reap maximum benefits It can be costly to set up The most advanced intelligent ACs can cost up to four times more than conventional climate control systems Some of them require complex installation procedures and configuration before you can start using them  Inverter technology: Inverter technology allows HVAC equipment to provide variable speed capacity capabilities that boost guest comfort by adjusting the BTUs and matching how warm or cool a consumer wants the space An inverter variable speed compressor operates like a dimmer, where the user has the flexibility to set the light at various shades depending on individual preference The results are continuous optimized comfort, dramatically reduced temperature swings, and improved in-room humidity levels Since inverter variable speed compressor technology matches the unit output to the actual demand of the room, less energy is consumed without sacrificing guest comfort Variable capacity is reduced after the set temperature is quickly reached, creating a more efficient operation that delivers maximum energy savings while keeping the space comfortable and the guest satisfied Compared to other split or window air conditioners, an inverter air conditioner is a bit expensive as it comes with unique features Also, if you need to repair your inverter air conditioner, you’ll have to spend more money compared to a regular air conditioner One of the main reasons behind this is that the inverter is complex in structure, and it needs highly professional HVAC technicians to repair it  Low-flow fixture: Standard faucets can on average use anywhere from 1-3 gallons per minute, or 4-8 liters per minute depending on the age of the faucet and the pipes, as well as the available 50 water pressure However, switching to a low-flow faucet that uses 1.5 gallons per minute can reduce your sink's water flow by about 30% or more The standard toilets use 1.6 gallons per flush, compared to the 1.28 gallons used by low-flow toilet fixtures The standard showerheads use 2.5 gallons of water per minute, while low-flow showerheads use no more than 2.0 gallons per minute Low flow fixtures are specifically designed to limit water waste The average low flow fixture expels around half the gallons per minute than a standard fixture Add that up over time, and you can save about a thousand gallons of water per year Besides, the less water you use, the less energy required to heat it For instance, if you are an avid hot shower taker, electricity is needed to heat that water As the result, low flow fixtures will allow you to use less electricity and less water, leaving you with a decrease of the amount owed on your utility bills Since these shower heads mix the water with the surrounding air, it can cause the water to cool down quickly There can also be a delay in warming the water, so a fast shower might not be as satisfying Moreover, there are models that can be adjusted to increase the water pressure in your shower head, but some don’t And old low-flow showerheads can be too stingy with water and make it feel like the pressure is lacking  Linen and towel reuse program: The first benefit of Linen and towel reuse programs is fewer loads of laundry correlate to lesser water use With a smaller overall laundry pile, you may be able to run smaller towel laundry loads for a far more efficient clean Less laundry to also implies smaller sewage, energy, and labor expenses, resulting in long-term savings It’s not simply about doing fewer washings Towels can sustain significant wear and tear throughout the hamper-stuffing, drying, folding, storage, and repositioning processes that they must endure each time they are rewashed Bath towels only need to be washed after three uses for hygiene reasons, and you may choose to impose laundry after three days of your stay, but even then, you are reducing two-thirds of the frequent usage your towels are undergoing 51 The Association for Linen Management estimates that hotels can save up to $6.50 a day per occupied room with such programs In any case, the savings add up quickly Assume that a 200-room hotel with a 55 percent occupancy rate implements a towel/linen reuse program At $6.50 per occupied room, that would be $260,975 saved per year Towel/linen reuse program contributes to water conservation and less detergent use The website Economically Sound estimates that a 150-room hotel can conserve 6,000 gallons of water and 40 gallons of laundry detergent per month with a towel/linen reuse program That's 72,000 gallons of water and 480 gallons of laundry detergent per year The disadvantage of this program is that some guests will unhappy because they were paying so much for a hotel room but they can not change the towels  Heat pump water system: Since they can draw from the heat in the air, these water heaters not have to work to generate new heat Instead, this heat comes from anywhere in the air, even the waste heat from a nearby furnace Because of this, they are incredibly energy efficient compared to traditional models, for specific, they are three times as energy efficient as a storage electric hot water heater And they’re long-lasting; a good, well-maintained heater can last between ten to fifteen years Also they reduced greenhouse gas emissions because they don’t generate heat, gas leaks and toxic emissions are non-existent from heat pump water heaters Plus, the unit itself doesn’t get too hot outside, making it a safer option for families with pets or kids Research has shown that if all residential electric water heaters were replaced with heat pump water heaters, the energy cost savings would jump to $12 billion annually, and 140 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions would be prevented annually That’s the equivalent of emissions from 13 million vehicles However, these water heaters can cost up to twice as much as other models, which can be a setback for those working on a tight budget The cost can range from around $2,100 to $3,300 upfront, not including installation Also, heat pump water is not suitable for very cold climates due to longer booster run time reduces the efficiency Besides, they 52 can be noisy, so they need to be cared when choosing where to install that avoid locating near guest room  The horizontal cage laundry equipment: Laundry in a horizontal cage has a few benefits First of all, it conserves three times as much water as the upper door washer (vertical cage washer) The best features of this type of washing machines are that they preserve sturdy clothing for longer periods of time, wash clothes less tightly against one another, and not stretch or deform clothing the way upper-door washing machines The front-loading washer's rotating mechanism can spin at 1400 rpm, which is roughly twice as fast as most upper-door washers This helps garments dry more quickly In addition to the normal washing modes, the front-loading washing machine includes a number of custom modes, various washing and drying capabilities, including immersion washing and screen cleaning for curtains Additionally, the washing efficiency surpasses that of a vertical cage washer A larger space is required to position the horizontal cage It uses more electricity than the vertical cage washer, thus It is more expensive, has a longer wash cycle than a vertical cage washer, and does not allow you to add more laundry at the same time  Rainwater storage system: The most common reason for installing a rainwater-harvesting tank is to save money The average garden hose sprays out liters upon liters of water for each minute of use, and you’ll be paying for every drop The initial investment might seem steep, but it’s one that pays dividends in the long run Some rainwater harvesting systems can be used to fill swimming pools, flush toilets, and even fill dishwashers and washing machines Moreover, when you install a rainwater harvesting tank, you’re not just going to be saving money, you’re also going to be helping the environment Studies have shown that switching to a rainwater harvesting tank can reduce hotel's water consumption by up to 100% 53 Rainwater can be used in hotel garden without filtration However, rainwater to be used in internal fixtures will need to be filtered and disinfected A sediment filter must be used to remove any contaminants, which might clog filters and valves, or cause discoloration If you plan on drinking your rainwater, or using it for washing yourself, you will also need a high-intensity ultraviolet sterilizer to destroy harmful microorganisms Besides, it can be difficult to harvest sufficient quantities Although a rainwater harvesting tank can help you through droughts, the amount of water they store is unlikely to last forever 3.2 Recommendation:  Organize the Earth hour program: With a message that is calling everyone to reflect on the link between humans and Nature, the mutual relationship between species, so that there are concrete actions and contributions to use energy saving and efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, limiting the consumption of single-use plastic products, towards achieving the goals set by the Paris Climate Agreement The earth is the only one that needs to be protected for today and forever Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is contributing to combating climate change Fighting climate change is the responsibility of all of us Turning off a light bulb is one more chance to cool the Earth Let green be the new color of the planet Take one more step to save the Earth Look to the future, act now  Waste control: According to the 2008 International Tourism Partnership Report, the average hotel generates about kg of waste/night/guest and owners often pay twice as much for the waste; the first is in packaged form and the second is for processing Separating waste at source is a way to contribute to reducing the total amount of waste entering the environment, and at the same time saving on collection, transportation and treatment costs With daily waste, hotels - restaurants should separate at least types of garbage: biodegradable waste (fruit peels, vegetables, tea grounds, coffee grounds, 54 leftovers, flowers, plants, etc.)), non-biodegradable waste (bottle labels, plastic bags, ceramic - porcelain - glass ) and recyclable waste (plastic items, plastic bottles, spray bottles, cans, paper, cartons ) The more detailed it is, the better With biodegradable waste, it can be completely recycled into enzymatic water used for washing dishes, spraying insects, cleaning floors or making bio-organic compost by composting, bokashi, etc In addition, waste recycling not only helps to keep the environment greener, but also benefits businesses with a short payback period and significant cost savings More specifically, food waste typically accounts for more than 40% of a typical hotel's solid waste Most types of food waste can be composted into green manure, a better way of disposing of waste than throwing away leftovers More and more hotels are adopting this recycling method, and training staff on how to dispose of it and its benefits  Use sparingly and protect water resources: Hotels - restaurants can reduce water by up to 50% if they use aeration faucets for kitchen-bathroom areas, use low-flow showers or install more water-efficient cleaning and laundry equipment Installing low-flow showerheads or faucets with aeration can save up to $1.50 per room per month Research shows that when traveling, the average person uses more water than usual In addition, other environmentally friendly solutions are also being applied by hotels in laundry rooms with the aim of preventing harmful chemicals from entering the wastewater system In addition, small notes placed in the bathroom with messages reminding tourists to proactively save water are also effective in spreading awareness to visitors Moreover, small notes placed in the bathroom with messages reminding tourists to actively save water are also effective in spreading awareness to visitors  Room service: Instead of providing shampoo and shower gel in small packages, switching to large bottles to serve many guests is a good way to significantly reduce the amount of waste released into the environment In addition, used bottles and jars can be recycled 55 within a certain period of time, helping the hotel save money In addition, the hotel's leftover shower gel can be re-cooked and turned into hotel souvenirs - a lovely new soap This helps to reduce waste as well as the money from the sale of the hotel will be donated to charities to help people  Encourage employee participation: Encourage employee participation by communicating through training sessions, tours or contests on maintaining awareness in a culture of service At the same time, the management staff also continuously provide information on the hotel's website, magazine or public areas about green tourism and its benefits in the hotel organizational environment  Purchasing eco - friendly supplies: The use of environment friendly materials in the hotel business is being strongly supported by hotels From the use of furniture, decoration, or personal items: drinking cups, etc., hotels are using materials that are close to nature and the environment This helps the hotel save costs and is also environmentally friendly This can be done by selecting office furniture made from sustainable materials like bamboo or recycled wood, choosing paper products made from post-consumer waste, and selecting cleaning supplies that are non-toxic and biodegradable Look for packaging made from sustainable materials like recycled cardboard and biodegradable plastic, and choose suppliers that use eco-friendly printing methods  Use eco - friendly cleaning products:  Microfiber towel People eventually toss away the cleaning supplies they use, and many of those aren't the eco-friendliest Reusing items is one approach to run a sustainable hotel, so use cleaning equipment that will last you a long time and be efficient Microfiber towels can be used repeatedly and are capable of cleaning any surface 56  Natural Disinfectant Spray Many cleaning sprays that people use contain hazardous substances such volatile organic compounds that have a negative influence on the environment, in addition to the cleaning tools that people use If you want to operate an eco-friendly hotel, non-toxic disinfectant sprays are a terrific choice These sprays are safe for use on all types of surfaces, non-toxic, and effective at removing any bacteria or germs  Non-Toxic Air Filters More than you might guess, using a non-toxic and environmentally friendly air filter enhancer in your hotel will help to purify it An air filter booster called NANO capture air makes your air filters more effective at purifying the air It's safe for the environment and non-toxic to use A clean environment requires that your visitors and employees breathe air free of pollutants, and this spray can help with that REFERENCE  Admin (2019, June 15) yếu to Co ban CUA
