Week 10 - Date of preparing: Period 29 - Date of teaching: UNIT 4: MY NEIGHBOURHOOD Lesson 3: A CLOSER LOOK (page 41, 42) A Aims: Knowledge: - To introduce topic of the lesson My neighbourhood To teach the comparative adjectives - To Practice forming and using the comparative adjectives + Vocabulary: - Use the words related to the topic My neighbourhood + Grammar: - Compare two people or things using comparative adjectives; - Asking for directions Objective: By the end of the lesson students will be able to know the form and usage of comparative adjectives Practicing forming and using the comparative adjectives Behavior: The love of the neighbourhood, the hometown and the country The likes and dislikes their neighbourhoods Having the serious attitude to asking and giving the directions; cooperative learning; sharing B Teaching aids: - Teacher: Text book, laptop, louspeaker, projector… - Students: Text books, … - Method: T-WC; group works; individual … C Procedure: Warm-up: Kim’s game (5 minutes) - T gets Ss to look through the words and think of the opposite words of these Write the opposite words: quiet fresh narrow boring good modern I Presentation: (12 minutes) - Teacher shows the pictures and says: We can use comparative adjectives to compare two people or things - Tom is taller than Mary - A house in a city is more expensive than a house in the countryside Grammar: - Teacher explains the grammar about comparative of adjectives REMEMBER: Irregular adjectives - good/ well better - bad worse - many / much more - little less - far farther / further II Practice: (15 minutes) Task 1: Complete the following sentences with the comparativeform of adjectives in brackets (page 41) - Ask Ss to read the instruction - Tell Ss what they should (With a weaker class, the first sentence as an example) - Remind Ss to pay attention to the number of the syllables in each adjective - Ask Ss to the exercise individually and then compare their answers with a classmate - Check the answers as a class - Confirm the correct answers * Key: noisier bigger more peaceful more exciting Task 2: Use the correct form of the words in brackets to complete the letter (page 42) - Ask Ss to read the instruction Tell Ss what they should (With a weaker class, the first sentence as an example) - Ask Ss to read and complete the letter individually - Remind them to pay attention to the number of the syllables in each adjective - Have Ss compare their answers in pairs before checking with the whole class - Observe and help when and where necessary, and correct Ss' pronunciation and intonation - Confirm the correct answers * Key: smaller older wider more delicious cheaper Task 3: Look at the pictures of the two neighbourhoods: Binh Minh and Long Son Compare two neighbourhoods using the adjectives (page 42) - Ask Ss to look at the pictures of the two neighbourhoods - Elicit the contrast between the things in the two neighbourhoods and ask them to use the adjectives in the box to describe them - Have Ss compare their sentences in pairs before showing some of their sentences to the whole class - Ask other Ss to give comments and correct any mistakes if possible - Move around to offer help if needed - If there is time, ask some Ss to write their sentences on the board * Suggested answers: a) Binh Minh is noisier than Long Son b) Binh Minh is more crowded than Long Son c) Long Son is quieter than Binh Minh d) Long Son is more peaceful than Binh Minh e) Binh Minh is more modern than Long Son f) Binh Minh is busier than Long Son g) Long Son is more boring than Binh Minh III Production: (11 minutes) Task 4: Work in pairs Ask and answer questions about Binh Minh and Long Son neighbourhoods using pictures in (page 42) - Model this activity with a stronger student - Tell Ss that they can use the information from the sentences they have written in to ask and answer questions about the two neighbourhoods - Ask Ss to work in pairs - Go around to observe and offer help if necessary - Call some pairs to practise in front of the class - Ask other Ss to give comments and correct any mistakes if possible - Check and confirm the correct answers * Example: A: Is Binh Minh noisier than Long Son? B: Yes, it is A: Is Long Son more modern than Binh Minh?
