STUDENT’S BOOK AUDIOSCRIPTS S.1 and S.2 It’s strange because in the holidays I can get up early every day But the first few days back at school are really difficult I can’t wake up in the morning, and I just want to sleep when I get home I feel just like this bear! In the holidays I can play computer games all day – it’s great! When school starts, I can’t play during the day, and even in the evenings I have homework, so I have no free time! So I know just how this boy feels! I love school because I can see my friends every day and I can learn interesting things I get bored at home, and in the holidays there’s nothing to So this kid is definitely me! 1.1 and 1.2 I think it’s good for families to spend time with each other every day – for example, during a meal It’s great to eat as a family because you can enjoy the meal and chat about your day In my family that’s difficult because my sister is a university student She’s studying engineering in the United States We message her all the time but it isn’t the same as hanging out together I haven’t been to many parts of the world, but I hope to travel more in the future But I saw a TV programme about schools in Singapore In the programme, it said students were under a lot of pressure from exams And not just older students but little kids, too Of course, education is important for everyone, but at my school we don’t have homework and exams all the time I think larger families are good because you learn to share and you get advice from people of different ages If you’re an only child, there’s just you and you get everything you want And it could be boring to be with your parents all the time But there can be problems, too If you grow up with a lot of brothers and sisters, home life can be quite competitive, as everyone wants to get their parents’ attention 1.3 That’s so clever It’s like a trick You know it isn’t real but your eyes still believe it And the grass looks like a green shirt! I don’t know how they did it but it’s really cool! What a great idea! We don’t have anything like that here – we just sit on the grass in the park I’d love to relax there by the water after a day at school You could get away from all the traffic in the streets and listen to music A great place to relax – much better than at home! Wow! I have one just like it in my bathroom at home – but it’s much, much smaller! I like it because it looks so different; the ones we have here look boring – you know, just grey metal frames on the side of the road This one looks so cool! 164 2ND EDITION I’ve never seen anything like that! It looks like it’s up in the air, like it’s floating They painted it there but it isn’t just to look cool It’s easier for drivers to see, so they slow down I suppose it’s a good idea if it stops accidents But would it work on every street? I mean, if they all looked like that, you wouldn’t notice them 1.4 and 1.5 A: Do you fancy a bike ride after school? B: Thanks, but I’m meeting a friend straight from class We have some writing to A: So, are you going to your homework together in the library? B: No, nothing like that We have a lot of different hobbies but writing is our favourite You see, we’re bloggers We write together every day and a lot of people read our posts A: Sounds great, but I don’t think I’d be good at that I prefer being outdoors B: Well, we’re all different, I guess Enjoy your ride A: Did you have a good time on your birthday? B: Yes, thanks I spent the afternoon with a few friends from school A: Did you have a party? B: No, I didn’t want one this year A party at home with decorations and a cake seemed a bit babyish – more for a kid who’s ten or something So we went paintballing It was amazing! We were covered in pink paint by the end! A: You lucky thing! I’ve always wanted to that B: Yes, much better than just going for a burger Listen, please Before you go, I need to give you a little information about the after-school clubs There are a few changes The video club is in Room 10 as usual, so you can continue editing your films Unfortunately, the technology tutor isn’t here but we hope to have robot-building back next week There’s no change to sports, but art is going to be in room this week, so take your paints and pencils to room All the classes start in ten minutes as usual, so … A: Dad, I want to meet up with my friends on Saturday but I haven’t got much money B: That makes two of us! We went shopping for some new trainers for you only last week A: I know, but my favourite band is playing and I can’t afford the ticket B: How much money you need? A: About thirty pounds B: Hmm, your brother wants some money to go to a football match at the weekend, too So we’ll see A: Oh, don’t say that! ‘We’ll see’ always means ‘no’! A2+ A: Can I have my friends over after school on Friday? B: Er, how many people you want to invite? A: Five B: Five! Do you remember the last time when just one friend came? There were packets, cans and empty pizza boxes all over your room A: We’ll be tidy There won’t be any problems, I promise We’re going to practise the guitar but we won’t be loud, honestly! B: Hmm, I’m not making food all evening – you could get takeaway pizzas like before Or why don’t you go out with your friends? A: But there aren’t many places to go round here Please, Mum! 1.6 and 1.7 This is a photo of a group of people I think it’s a family There are two teenagers, their parents and grandparents They are all outside There aren’t any houses in the photo but I can see some trees behind the family So perhaps they are in a park or in the country The boy is at the front of the group and the girl is at the back The sun is shining Maybe it’s quite warm because the people are wearing shirts and sweaters but not coats They are all wearing jeans or trousers They are walking on the grass, and they are smiling and laughing I think they’re all having a good time 1.8 and 1.9 My name’s Azra I’m from Izmir, a city on the east coast of Turkey It’s great living by the sea because I can lots of different water sports – or just go to the beach after school It’s relaxing just to hang out by the water You can read a book, listen to music or just look at the beautiful blue sea For me, it’s the perfect location for young people Hey, I’m Carlos Sure, the beach is nice, but there are always a lot of crowds and it isn’t great in the winter I’d say that living in the capital city is better In Madrid, where I’m from, there is so much for people of our age: sports, music, gaming competitions, markets, exhibitions – everything! And it’s in the centre of the country, so it’s easy to go north or south Ewa here You don’t have to live in the capital to enjoy it You can just visit when you want to No, in my opinion, there’s no better place than near the mountains I’m from the Polish town of Zakopane, in the south of the country The scenery is amazing In winter, I ski, of course, and last year I tried snowboarding The summer is also great for walking and enjoying nature Photocopiable © Pearson Education Limited 2019 STUDENT’S BOOK AUDIOSCRIPTS 1.10 and 1.11 We live in the country now but my parents grew up in an industrial area full of factories The art in the gallery was really traditional I wanted to see something more modern I wanted the after-school club to have some interesting activities but the classes were very dull There isn’t much crime in our village and there are only a few cars, so the streets are very safe and quiet People often say street art is ugly but there are some very attractive pictures just opposite our school 1.12 J = Josh E = Eddie J: Oh, not again! E: Josh, how many times has your phone beeped? Who is messaging you all the time? J: I’m sorry, Eddie, but it’s my mum She wants to speak to me E: Well, call her or turn your phone off I’m trying to watch the match J: Hi, Mum I’m at the football Yes, Josh and I had a pizza before we arrived at the ground Can we speak later? Bye, Mum E: Did you see that? What a goal! J: Hi again, Mum Is there something important you need to tell me? No It isn’t raining and I’ve got my jacket, so there’s no problem Can I call you in an hour, at the end of the game? Yes, bye, Mum OK See you later Right, back to the action! E: What now? J: Hi, Mum! What’s the problem? I can’t leave the match now to go to the supermarket! It isn’t dinner time yet, so why can’t I go later? I’ll get what you need on the way home But I didn’t know she was visiting No one told me Why don’t I go to her house at the weekend? I could go on Saturday or Sunday and we could … 2.1 and 2.2 S = Speaker S1: In my free time I play hockey as I’m in the school team S2: I dancing and singing, and also I a bit of horse-riding S3: At the weekend I usually go to work in a care home and I entertain the residents S4: The hobbies that I like to are recording amateur YouTube videos in my bedroom at home, I like to play computer games when I’ve got some free time, and I sometimes go to the park with my friends to play football S1: I dance five times a week and I play hockey once a week S5: I train two times a week for my football club S3: I dance every day and I have singing two hours a week S4: At the weekends I like to watch television series and films 165 2ND EDITION S2: I’m learning gymnastic skills at the moment and it’s good fun S5: I am learning to play the ukulele and I’m teaching myself by watching YouTube videos S2: At the weekends I go to trampoline parks and to a big shop in the centre in London S4: I am learning to play the drums 2.3 There are lots of clubs for young people, from sports clubs to theatre clubs and local youth groups A new report says that joining a club has a lot of positive effects on young people’s lives Some of the advantages are things that we would expect, like spending time with other people and making new friends But there are also some effects that are more of a surprise For example, the report says that young people who join clubs more exercise than ones who don’t, so they are fitter They also make more healthy choices, like eating more fruit and vegetables and not eating foods that are bad for them And the big surprise is that people who are members of clubs and take part in activities are happier than those who don’t join clubs With all these advantages, maybe it’s time to look again at the clubs in your town or city 2.4 Hello I want to talk to you today about Copthorn Youth Club So, who comes to our club? Well, we’re quite a new club, only ten months old, and we want to get up to one hundred members We’ve got fifty-five now, but new people are joining every week, so we hope we can soon get our numbers up We meet once a week I know some youth clubs meet at the weekend, but we think people are often busy with other activities on Saturday and Sunday, so we always get together on a Thursday And what we do? Well, we a lot of different activities, and we also have talks from guest speakers We invite people from different countries and ask them to tell us where they’re from and what life is like there We have a kitchen at the hall where we meet, and we occasionally make pizzas together or cook other food We’re also pleased because we have five new computers You can use them for playing games or use the internet for homework, and they also have programs for doing animation, so some of our members are working on a film at the moment, which will be ready soon One thing that everyone thinks is really good fun is the monthly competition It’s different each time; for example, it might be to find the best joke or the best dance moves Everyone really enjoys that Something I think we should in the future is increase the number of trips we go on So far, we’ve only been to the local museum, but I can think of lots of other interesting places If you have any ideas, let me know Anyway, thanks for listening and I hope to see some of you at the youth club next week A2+ 2.5–2.8 A: So, shall we start with the computer game? What you think about that idea? B: I’m not sure Some people enjoy playing computer games, but a lot of people don’t like them – especially older people A: I agree with you Older people don’t usually like these games And I don’t think that a traditional game is a good idea because these games are a bit boring, in my opinion B: That’s true And there are often arguments when people play them Would going for a walk be a good idea? Most people like going for a walk A: Well, it’s OK if there’s a nice park or something near where you live B: OK, so that’s possible Would football be a good idea? Or volleyball? A: Yes, I think that’s a great idea Most people enjoy playing these games, and even the older people who don’t like computer games can take part B: No, I disagree I think that some people are bad losers They only like playing when they win A: Yes, you’re right So what about a film? Maybe that would be a better choice B: Yes, I agree that would be a good choice Everyone loves watching films So, what else is there? I think relaxing in the garden is boring What you think? A: Yes, I agree It’s boring, especially for young people B: OK So, it’s time to decide What you think? A: Well, I would say either going for a walk or watching a film Do you agree? B: Yes, but I think a film is more fun because you can choose something funny, so everyone will laugh together, and you can enjoy a film even when it gets a bit colder, in the evening So maybe we should choose the film Are you OK with that? A: Yes, good idea We’ll go for that one then 2.9 and 2.10 You need to work harder at school if you want to make progress I think you’re just wasting time when you’re playing games on your phone You could be doing something useful and more fun! Emily is the best student in our class She always gets good results in exams I’m taking part in a singing competition next weekend I really hope I win! Good luck with your show tonight, Sam I’m sure everything will go well for you – you’ll be a real star! Oh, this part is so difficult I keep trying, but I just can’t get it right! Photocopiable © Pearson Education Limited 2019 STUDENT’S BOOK AUDIOSCRIPTS 2.11 and 2.12 A: Who messages you the most often? B: That’s definitely my mum She messages me at least twenty times a day! A: Who you buy birthday presents for? B: Just my family I don’t usually buy presents for friends because I don’t have enough money! A: Who you usually go to the youth club with? B: I sometimes go on my own, but I usually go with Abi A: Who plays tennis in your family? B: Only my brother No one else plays, and I only play football 3.4 As I said, the fun of geocaching is that you never know what’s in the box Sometimes geocachers find something fantastic One guy found a valuable gold watch worth hundreds of pounds And another geocacher was the first to find a container with a useful modern GPS gadget in it – perfect for finding more treasure! I’ve been into geocaching for about a year but, sadly, I haven’t been quite so lucky My first ever cache contained just one thing: a scary black spider! But it really isn’t about the object; it’s about the experience The last cache I opened had a tiny wooden box which played a tune to welcome the finder That really made me smile So why don’t you give geocaching a try? You may not find a fortune but you’ll have some great stories to tell about your adventures 3.5 I = Interviewer E = Eddie I: Are you a writer? Do you know anyone who loves stories? Well, keep listening With us we have Eddie, a fan of a different way of telling stories called a story slam So what actually is a story slam? E: Basically, it’s an event for story-lovers But it’s different from a book club because people listen to writers read their own work Each person has five minutes to read their story aloud to the audience There are usually about twenty speakers in each slam but it isn’t a competition with a prize, so you don’t win anything At the end, people just vote for the story they like best I: How did you first hear about the idea of a story slam? E: I’d like to say that it was my idea, but I first read about it online A teenager from Washington blogged about a slam she went to I mentioned the idea to my friends but no one was very interested! Then an American teacher joined our school and he organised the first story slam for the students 166 2ND EDITION A2+ I: What happened at that first event? E: We were all very nervous, of course, but everything went well The teacher gave us lots of advice and we practised reading aloud to make them sound interesting Someone told a ghost story, another person did science fiction, and there were lots of funny stories too I wrote about something that really happened I: Oh? What was your first story? E: Well, I was walking through a clothes shop when my friend messaged me I wasn’t looking where I was going and I knocked into some people No one got annoyed or anything Then, suddenly, I walked right into a tall mirror … and I said sorry to the person opposite! Then I realised it was me! It didn’t hurt but everyone in the shop was laughing My face went bright red I: So what you like best about story slams? E: I enjoy being creative but that’s not the most important thing For me, it’s the audience Having a group of people there to react to your ideas is great There’s nothing better And it doesn’t matter if they don’t choose your story as the best I: In the future, you think you’ll become a professional writer? E: That would be an interesting life but it’s also difficult to earn money And writing for me is just for fun I’m going to continue with it but not as a full-time job To be honest, I’m not sure what I’m going to when I leave school someone sat down next to me – it was the other teenager’s mum Can you guess what happened next? She told me I was a really good kid and that she was very proud of me I started to laugh but I kept my head down In the end, my mum came back and the lady realised her mistake She was really embarrassed After what happened, I often tell my mum to be proud of me, just like the lady on the plane! 3.6 3.9 and 3.10 This is a true story that happened to me last year It was my friend’s birthday party and we were at a pizza place Everyone was chatting and we were all enjoying our food I was sitting in the corner and there wasn’t much space, so I was right up against the table Then I wanted to get something from my bag, so I stood up and pushed my chair back But I didn’t know the tablecloth was stuck on the belt I was wearing Can you imagine what I did after that? I pulled everything off the table when I was moving from my seat! Suddenly, a pizza flew up and landed on my friend’s face … and it was her birthday There was food everywhere Then a boy at the next table took a photo Seconds later, we were all over social media In the end, we all went home early When I think back to what happened, I feel embarrassed but I’ve laughed about it with all my friends I never watch horror movies They’re much too scary! I use the dictionary on my phone a lot – it’s useful for checking spelling I saw something yellow and shiny on the ground – it was a gold ring with a diamond! My favourite colours are dark blue and black I never wear light colours like white We didn’t anything special on my birthday It was just an ordinary day The museum was full of ancient objects from across the world They were all thousands of years old 3.7 I’m going to tell you about something funny that happened on a plane I was travelling with my mum to Sydney, to visit my aunt While I was looking for my seat, I noticed a boy my age a few of rows in front We both had dark hair and were wearing jeans and a top He was travelling with his mum too During the flight, my mum went to sleep while I was watching a video Suddenly, she woke up and went to the bathroom A little later, 3.8 Um, where am I? Oh yes This is a story, er, that happened last month, I think Yes, it was last month That’s right So, I was walking my dog when my mum messaged me Or was it my dad? I can’t remember Anyway, um, the message said I had to go home, so I turned round and … I’m going to tell you about something funny that happened to me I was waiting outside school for some friends I had my headphones on and my favourite song was playing on my phone I love music and I started singing the words and doing the dance moves My voice isn’t great but it didn’t matter because I was alone What you think happened next? Yes, my friends arrived and … This story is about something that happened to me a few years ago It was the first day at a new school I was making a noise in class when the teacher got angry and asked me to leave I walked to the front of the class and there were two doors in front of me I chose the wrong one and I walked into a cupboard full of books I could hear … 4.1 and 4.2 S = Speaker S1: This evening I’m going out with my friends to the cinema S2: This evening I’m singing in a show S3: Well, this summer for my holiday, I’m going to an island off Thailand, which is quite new for me because I’ve only ever been on the mainland S4: Tonight I’m going to look after my brothers because my mum is out S2: This weekend I’m going to have a meal in a restaurant for my brother’s birthday Photocopiable © Pearson Education Limited 2019 STUDENT’S BOOK AUDIOSCRIPTS S1: At the weekend I’m going shopping with my friends and family I’m going to buy a dress for my grandma’s anniversary S5: This evening I’m going to stay at home and revise for my exams next week S6: I’m going to complete my coursework, which needs to be done before September S7: Tomorrow I’m going to go swimming I start swimming at o’clock and it finishes at 7.30 I’ve been swimming for about five years now I usually it twice a week and that’s on a Sunday and a Thursday S8: Tonight I am going to my best friend’s party S9: I’m meeting a friend for lunch in town and then we’re going to watch a film at the cinema S5: I’m meeting my friends and we are going to play football 4.3 and 4.4 I can’t learn something new if someone just tells me how to it I need to watch someone something and then have a go myself I hate just listening and noting down what someone says I like to be active I find it difficult to settle down in class and sit still I prefer to get up and move around I work best with other people I don’t like working alone I’m good at listening to other people and taking advice from them I find it difficult to make up my mind about something if I’m working alone So I like doing projects with my friends I learn by trying new things If I’m not sure about how to something, I’m happy to give it a try and see what happens I’m not scared of taking a chance and making a mistake because that’s how you learn; and I don’t worry about failing If something isn’t correct, I’m happy to cross it out and start again I don’t learn very quickly and I need to work hard if I want to well and get good grades in tests I usually hand my work in on time I hate it if I’m late with a piece of work and the teacher tells me off 4.5 A: Did you enjoy that history class? B: Not really I thought the film we watched was too long – and it was a bit boring A: Really? I agree it was quite long, but I learned a lot from it I thought the quiz was fun, too B: Maybe for you, because you know a lot about the past It was too difficult for me and my team We only got a few right But it was good that we all talked about the subject together as a class A: Yeah, that was really interesting Maybe you should be in my team for the next quiz! 167 2ND EDITION A2+ 4.6 4.7 A: Why we get so much homework? It’s not fair! My dad says he didn’t have much homework when he was at school B: Yeah, my parents say the same They didn’t spend much time doing homework when they were young, so they had more free time But that doesn’t mean their homework was easy They had to remember more facts because they didn’t have the internet to check things A: That’s true They only had a few books to find information in I think the internet makes homework more interesting, but it takes more time now A: Hi Did you enjoy the trip to the football match? B: Yes, it was great! The final score was 2–2, which wasn’t bad Some people were a bit disappointed, but I was just glad our team didn’t lose! We’re really lucky that our teachers take us on trips like that It’s a lot of work for them Unfortunately, some students didn’t behave well and the teachers got a bit angry with them Those students may be really disapointed next time because the teachers may not allow them to go on the next trip! I definitely want to go again! A: Hi, Gemma Is that your new guitar? B: Yes My parents bought it for me, but I don’t know what to I love learning it and I enjoy my lessons at school, but I never get any better I think maybe I should change and learn something different, like the piano A: No, don’t that You love the guitar It’s a difficult instrument to learn B: I know And I don’t think I can spend any more time practising A: Why don’t you join the school band? Playing with other people is more fun than practising on your own B: That’s a good idea Thanks A: Do you think schools will be very different in fifty years? B: Hmm … I think they’ll be different in some ways, but not others I think people will learn the same subjects, like maths and science A: Yes, you’re probably right that the subjects won’t change much But the way we learn might change I mean, schools might be bigger, with thousands of students B: No, I don’t agree I think they’ll probably be smaller because it will be possible for students to study at home and have lessons with their teachers online A: That’s true That would be cool! This photo shows some people in a café There are five people in the photo and they are all teenagers I think they might be school friends because they have some books with them They’re wearing warm clothes, so it’s probably winter They’re drinking orange juice, and they look very relaxed and happy Maybe school has finished for today The girl on the left is writing something in her notebook and the boy next to her is looking at his phone The boy on the right is showing the two girls his tablet I think maybe he’s showing them some photos or a video The girls are looking at the tablet and they’re smiling, so maybe the video or photos are funny ones 4.9 and 4.10 T = Tim J = Josh T: Hi, Josh! Nearly the weekend! J: Oh hi, Tim I know I can’t wait! T: Hey, you fancy meeting up on Saturday morning? We could go into town I need to get some new trainers J: I can’t on Saturday morning because I’ve got my guitar lesson I don’t finish until half past eleven T: Well, what about after your lesson? We could meet at my house and have some lunch, then go into town together? J: That sounds good I can get to your house at about twelve T: Cool! See you there! J: Yeah See you! L = Laura R = Rosie L: Hi, Rosie How are things? Did you get your project finished? R: Yeah, I handed it in yesterday L: Well done! So, you fancy going to the cinema tonight? There are some really good films on at the moment R: I can’t tonight because I have to babysit for my little sister But what about Friday night? I’m free then L: That sounds good I’m free Friday We could meet at the cinema at half past six The film starts at seven That’ll give us time to buy some popcorn R: Good idea I need to check with my mum, of course But I’m sure it’s OK I’ll text you if there’s a problem L: OK See you on Friday then R: Yes See you there Photocopiable © Pearson Education Limited 2019 STUDENT’S BOOK AUDIOSCRIPTS 2ND EDITION 4.11 5.1 and 5.2 I went on an exchange to England last year and it was a really good experience First, I practised my English a lot, especially with my host family because they didn’t speak any German So my English really improved I also made a lot of new friends I think it’s great when you have friends in other countries; it’s interesting to talk to them about different things Also, I think you learn to things for yourself when you go to another country You can’t just ask your parents or your friends all the time You have to think for yourself I might go on an exchange to Spain next year That would be good! My school organised an exchange visit to Italy last year In some ways it was really difficult because my Italian wasn’t very good, so it was difficult to talk to my host family But it was good that I had to work hard and try to speak It made me more confident, and now I know that I can use my Italian My host family were really nice – so kind I now feel like I have a second family in Italy and I’m definitely going to visit them again The best thing was living in a different culture Living in another country teaches you so much and it helps you understand how people in other countries are different, and how they are the same as you S = Speaker S1: I think it’s better to get style tips from my friends because it’s not really important what supermodels wear in magazines S2: I think it’s better to get fashion tips from your friends because they’re honest S3: I think it is best to get style advice from fashion experts rather than friends because fashion experts know exactly what they’re talking about S4: I think it’s better to get style tips from your friends because they know you better S5: I think expensive clothes are often better as they are higher quality, but cheaper clothes, you can sometimes buy more of them as you have more money S6: I think expensive clothes are better than cheaper clothes because I feel like they last longer and maybe you can get designer brands as well S7: I think expensive and cheap clothes can be good, but, um, usually the more expensive ones are better quality but you can get cheaper ones that are just as good S1: My teeth are straighter than they were five years ago because I’ve had braces S3: Compared to five years ago, I’m a lot taller and more confident in myself S8: Um, I prefer going shopping with my friends because there’s a lot more things to do, and with my parents it’s more boring S5: I find shopping easier with friends as it’s often more fun and more interesting to spend time with them I also find it more enjoyable as we often have lunch together 4.12 A: And the final answer, to question number ten: the capital of Hungary is Budapest B: Oh, yes, of course it is! I knew that, but I put Prague! How annoying! A: You look very happy today! B: I am! We just got our results for the end of term exams, and I got all As and Bs! A: Well done! A: Mr Simpson? B: Yes, Helen? A: I just want to give you this homework It’s my history project B: Oh, thank you very much See you tomorrow A: What are you going to for your birthday? B: I don’t know I’d like to go and watch a football match, but not all my friends like football, so I might have a party at home; or maybe I’ll go to the cinema It’s so hard – I really can’t decide! OK Listen, please … Thank you Right, let’s get started Right, I’ve got some information about the school trip to the museum next week It’s quite important, so I suggest you write it in your notebooks Then you won’t forget 168 5.4 and 5.5 Hey there You’re on this site, so you care about how you look, right? But I don’t think I’d like to be a model It’s harder work than you think and I wouldn’t like to be as thin as most models Joe I’m not very keen on being in photos People think that teenagers are always in selfies but some young people aren’t confident enough Maybe they think they aren’t as cool as the other kids online I’m not shy when I meet people but I just prefer not to be in photos all over the internet To me, the world of selfies is getting too competitive Some people think they need to look like a supermodel They check their hair and apply make-up before they take a picture It’s a bit silly, really A good photo is about the situation and enjoying being somewhere, not about looking good 6.1 People often ask me, ‘What’s the best thing to if you meet a bear?’ Well, the best thing is to look after yourself and NOT meet a bear There are a few simple rules First, plan your route carefully Look out for signs that say you can’t go into a particular area This is often because there are bears there, so you must take notice of these Secondly, a lot of meetings with bears happen because people aren’t careful enough with food Bears love food and the smell of food always attracts them Camping is great fun and you can camp overnight in the park, but you have to keep your food in a special box so it doesn’t attract bears You mustn’t leave food lying around 169 2ND EDITION Next, people often ask me about bear spray: does it work? The short answer is ‘yes’ You don’t have to carry bear spray, but it’s a good idea for an emergency situation But of course, you don’t really want to be that close to a bear In fact, the next rule is: don’t go too close to any wild animals You must stay one hundred metres away from bears and twenty-five metres away from other animals You mustn’t go any closer than this, even if they seem to be sleeping Also, bears can get angry if they don’t see you coming, so you have to make a lot of noise while you’re walking, to warn them that you are there They will then decide for themselves to move away from you But what should you if all these things fail and you end up too close to a bear? Well, if a bear comes towards you, you mustn’t run away A bear can run faster than you and you won’t get away! You must use your arms to make yourself look big, then turn sideways and walk slowly away You mustn’t run, shout or make any sudden movements If the bear runs towards you, that’s the time to use your bear spray! It’s best to spray when the bear is about five to ten metres away and aim for its head and eyes The pepper will get in its eyes and will give you time to get away Finally, my advice is: don’t go hiking by yourself – always go with a friend 6.2 This animal has soft fur and a long tail It can climb trees and jump easily from tree to tree It has sharp teeth and can sometimes bite people This animal has wings and can fly It’s blind, so it can’t see, and it hunts at night for food It catches small insects to eat This is a large sea animal It has a powerful tail which helps it to swim fast It hunts for small fish to eat It lives in large groups and is very clever It’s also a friendly animal and often helps people This is a kind of bird, so it has feathers on its body But it can’t fly It can dive into the sea and it uses its wings for swimming It catches fish to eat This is an insect You often see it flying around your garden or in parks It lands on flowers and it uses the sweet liquid in the flowers to make honey, which people can eat 6.3 It’s true that all birds have wings and feathers Some birds, like the kiwi in New Zealand, can’t fly, but they still have wings In the past there was a bird called the Moa in New Zealand, which didn’t have wings, but none of these birds are alive today This is false Most dogs have fur but there are some kinds of dogs, like the Peruvian Inca Orchid, which don’t have any fur – they just have skin A2+ It’s true that all dogs and foxes have tails, although some kinds of dog have very short tails Some bats have tails, but others don’t, so the sentence is false 6.4–6.6 I hope you’re all looking forward to the camping trip next weekend The weather forecast looks excellent It’s going to be sunny all weekend and it’s going to be hot too, so please remember to bring a water bottle You don’t need to pack coats, but bring a sweater as it’ll be cold in the evenings Mobile phones aren’t allowed because we don’t want you to lose them If you need to make a call, you can ask a teacher to use theirs OK, any questions? A: That was a lovely walk today, wasn’t it? And we were really lucky with the weather B: Yes, the countryside was beautiful, but it was quite hard getting to the top of that hill! A: That’s true Maybe we should plan to walk along the beach tomorrow That would be easier, and it’s lovely being by the sea B: Yes, I like the beach, but it’s quite crowded I’d rather go somewhere quieter, like the forest It’s more interesting walking there, and we might see some animals A: OK Let’s that A: Shall we have a barbecue at the weekend, Mum? B: I’m not sure I don’t think the weather’s going to be very good, is it? You can’t have a barbecue if it’s raining A: No, it isn’t going to rain I checked the forecast It’s going to be cloudy, but dry and quite warm And there isn’t going to be much wind, so I think a barbecue will be fine B: Hmm … I think I’d rather wait until a sunny day Maybe in a couple of weeks A: Wow! These holiday photos are amazing! What a fantastic beach! B: Yeah, I know It was great And it wasn’t too busy either A: Cool Did you swim in the sea? B: Well, no It was a bit disappointing, really The water looks lovely but it isn’t very safe for swimming, so we swam in the pool at the hotel There was a river near the hotel too, and some people swam there, but the water was freezing, so I didn’t try it! But it was great fun playing on the beach! If you get the chance to visit a rainforest, you should go for it I wouldn’t recommend going by boat, though Sometimes the river’s quite wide and you can’t really see what’s going on in the trees Don’t choose an organised trip in a truck either The noise from the vehicle scares all the wildlife away The only way to really get a feeling of what the rainforest is like is on foot It’s the most difficult option, but definitely the best Photocopiable © Pearson Education Limited 2019 STUDENT’S BOOK AUDIOSCRIPTS 2ND EDITION 6.7 6.10 and 6.11 Wild camping is allowed in Scotland, which means you can camp anywhere – in fields, on mountains, next to lakes or by the sea I definitely prefer wild camping to staying on campsites Campsites are noisy and crowded, like being in a city But wild camping is magical – you can look out at the stars at night, hear the wind blowing through the trees and watch the sun coming up while you have your breakfast Of course, you have to be sensible and choose a safe place to camp The main disadvantage is that you have to carry your tent with you, plus all your food and water And, of course, you have to carry all your rubbish away with you It’s also not always fun washing your face in a freezing mountain stream! But for me, the feeling of freedom it gives you makes it all worth the effort! There’s a lovely, peaceful beach near where I live, and I love going there I usually go in the evening, when there aren’t many people I like taking my shoes off and walking through the water It feels lovely and cool on my feet Everything is silent, except for the gentle sound of the water on the sand I find it very calm, and it’s a great place to think In my country there’s a place called the Iguazu Falls There are lots of huge waterfalls You can climb up and stand near the waterfall, but you mustn’t go too close It’s really loud, so you can’t speak, but you just have to look at it! It’s so beautiful, especially when the sun is bright and it’s shining on the water 6.8 A: So, let’s think about the best place for them to camp Shall we start with the beach? Do you think that’s a good idea? B: Well, not really I think it’s a dangerous place because the sea might come up in the night, especially if there’s a storm A: Yes, I agree with you I think a forest is a safer place because the trees will protect you from the wind B: Yes And also, they could use wood to make a fire So I think the forest would be more fun than the beach And there are no dangerous wild animals in this country A: Yes, that’s true But what about this one, near a stream? It might be useful to be close to water What you think? B: No, I disagree I don’t think it’s safe to drink water in the wild I think it’s better to carry your own water with you – then you know that it’s clean A: Yes, you’re right What you think about this one, right up in the mountains? B: Hmm … I don’t think it’s very sensible to camp so far away from towns and villages They might have an accident, and then they wouldn’t be able to get help A: Yes, I agree I think it’s more sensible to camp in a field Fields are usually closer to villages This one looks good because the wall will keep their tent safe from the wind B: Yes, but they shouldn’t camp in a field with animals I think that’s the worst idea of them all A: Yes It wouldn’t be easy to sleep with the animals all around! B: So, shall we decide on the best place? A: Yes In my opinion, it’s either in the forest or the field next to a wall B: I agree with you And I think that a forest is probably the best idea They’ll be safe from the wind and they can find wood to make a fire A: Yes So, we’ll go for that one 170 7.1 and 7.2 The person who makes the most delicious food is my mum The smells which we get from the kitchen when she’s cooking are amazing She’s someone who likes parties, too, so she often invites a big group of people to share a meal And nobody leaves the house hungry! One thing which makes me hungry is the smell of fresh bread My dad makes some every weekend It’s delicious Oh, and I always run to the table when I smell roast chicken – it’s my favourite And another thing which makes me want to eat is the smell of popcorn I can’t say no to it! I’m a person who cares about animals So the one food which I’d never eat is meat I’ve been a vegetarian for years, so it’s not part of my diet It’s the same for fish, of course And something which I’d never drink is tea I just hate the smell of it Yuk! 7.3 A: B: A: B: A: Would you like one of these for dessert? Mmm, please There you are Ugh! Sorry, but that’s so sour I can’t eat it Oh I prefer these I don’t like the fruit flavours Would you like an apple instead? B: Great, thanks! A: I’m starving! B: Me too! I’ve got some raw carrots my mum gave me with my lunch We could share those if you like A: Er, no, thanks I’d love some crispy fries from here B: Hmm, all salty and hot But the cheapest are one pound and I’ve only got fifty p A: And I haven’t got any money at all B: We could share a bag of peanuts from the shop A: OK, great Much better than vegetables! A2+ A: B: A: B: A: You eat meat, don’t you? Yes, I love it Well, you’re going to love this There you are Oh, thank you Now take a big bite and tell me what you think Good, isn’t it? You can’t beat barbecued food B: Very nice, thank you Can I have a drink, please? A: Sure And then you can have some more to eat if you like A: What’s that smell? B: What? On no! The oven! … Oh, it says on the box to bake for twelve minutes and it was in for half an hour We can’t eat that A: It might be OK in the middle – the cheese and bits of chicken look OK B: You’re joking, right? It’s completely black on the sides! Let’s make a sandwich Now what’s in the fridge? 7.4 and 7.5 A: Hey, have you seen this new food blog? It’s got some great ideas B: Oh I’m not really into looking at recipes I like cooking but I just use the book we have at home A: But it doesn’t have just recipes It’s full of articles on everything about food You can learn how to eat healthily, what’s good and bad about being vegetarian, all sorts of things B: Hmm … I was thinking of giving up meat, so I might check it out A: Yes, have a look The blogger writes well and she gets comments from teens from all over the world A: Phew! I’m so full – I couldn’t eat another thing B: Yes, you made a good choice That pizza was huge but my sandwich was tiny A: Sorry I didn’t offer you any But you must admit the service was good B: Sure, they brought the food quickly and that’s great It’s just that I’m still hungry A: Why don’t you have a dessert – a big piece of chocolate cake or something? B: Hmm, I think I’ll leave it I’ve had the desserts here before and they’re all very sweet A: How was your cookery presentation last week? B: Not great I was making biscuits from the recipe I use at home … A: Don’t tell me – you burned them! B: No, it wasn’t that I thought I knew the recipe, so I didn’t have a copy I tried to explain everything simply but I got confused And then I got nervous Photocopiable © Pearson Education Limited 2019 STUDENT’S BOOK AUDIOSCRIPTS A: Did you start talking too quickly? I always talk fast when I’m nervous B: Actually, I couldn’t think what to next and I didn’t remember how much sugar, milk and butter we needed A: So what did you do? B: We found a recipe online but the teacher wasn’t very happy! A: How’s the revision going? B: OK, thanks I’m studying really hard, so I’ll be happy when the exams are over A: Me too Hey, why don’t we have a party at the end of term to celebrate? B: Nice idea We could have a beach barbecue A: Perfect! I’ll find out what everyone likes to eat B: Wait a second – don’t we need to agree a date first? A: Yes, you’re right We need to know when everyone is free before we talk about food B: OK, let’s that and then we can send out an invitation A: Great! I’m looking forward to it already A: Are you OK? You look a bit upset B: I’m fine I just had a disagreement with my mum over lunch A: Did she make you turn your phone off ? I can’t use mine at the table B: Me neither, so my phone was in my bag – nowhere near me A: So what happened? Did you ask for something else to eat? B: No, I was happily eating my pasta but there was a lot there I got full quite quickly, so I only ate about half A: Well, that’s sensible B: My mum doesn’t think so She says I’ll have to eat the rest for dinner! 7.6 and 7.7 This photo shows a group of young people in a kitchen It isn’t a lesson in an ordinary school, so they are probably learning to become chefs, I think All the students are girls and the teacher is a man He’s showing them how to make ice cream He’s putting some fruit on top … er, I can’t remember the word in English but it’s a type of fruit you eat in the summer The students are wearing tall hats and a black uniform It looks like a type of jacket They look very interested and are watching the teacher carefully There are different plastic objects in front of the teacher I’m not sure of the word in English, but the one with the fruit is something you use for holding food or water There’s an object in front of two students at the back I’m not sure what it is but maybe it’s something you use for heating food 171 2ND EDITION 7.9 and 7.10 The oven was too hot and the biscuits I made were burned – just completely black – so I threw them away People say it’s better for you not to cook vegetables and to eat them raw There were so many chillies in the soup that I couldn’t eat it It was much too spicy for me! Yuk! This orange hasn’t got any juice in it at all It’s really dry I saw a video on YouTube of a girl who ate a lemon, including the skin How can anyone eat something so sour? I don’t eat much sugar, so I always choose salty popcorn, not sweet 7.11 Hi and welcome back to ‘Food Focus’ Today’s podcast is all about everyone’s favourite food, which is, of course, chocolate! Tomorrow is, in fact, World Chocolate Day Yes, the seventh of July is the day when countries around the world celebrate chocolate of different types I’ll give you some ideas for recipes later in the podcast but first, a few facts on chocolate We get chocolate from cocoa beans, which were very important to the ancient Mayans, the people who lived in what is now Mexico The Mayans used cocoa beans as money and they were worth more than gold And we’ve known about chocolate for a long time When you think the word ‘chocolate’ first entered the English language? In the 1920s perhaps or earlier, in the 1800s? It was, in fact, in 1604, so more than four hundred years ago Although cocoa bean production started in South America, it’s the Europeans who really love chocolate nowadays Europeans eat about half of the world’s chocolate and the average person in Britain, Switzerland or Germany eats eleven kilos of chocolate a year As a celebration of its 100th year, a British chocolate company created the biggest chocolate bar in the world How much did it weigh? An incredible 5,792 kilos! Now that is a lot of chocolate! How would you feel about seeing yourself in chocolate? There are clever artists who have made sculptures of famous people such as actors, singers and international leaders In 2016, a company made a head and shoulders statue of the Queen of England It even has a crown and jewellery made of chocolate Amazing! So how could you celebrate … 8.1 and 8.2 S = Speaker S1: I love to go on holiday I’ve visited Dubai, America, France and Spain but I haven’t been to Japan S2: I’ve eaten snails on holiday in France and I’ve seen jellyfish in Portugal S1: I’ve already been to Wales this year S2: I’ve just got back from a week’s holiday in France A2+ S3: I’ve been to the Greek islands but I’ve never visited Spain S4: I have stayed in a rainforest overnight, I have been to the beach in Australia, I’ve also visited Europe S3: I’ve sailed on a glass-bottom boat and seen the fish beneath me S5: I’ve been scuba-diving in Ibiza with my family 8.3 A: Hello, can I help you? B: Yes, we’re staying here tonight The name’s Mr Edwards A: Mr Edwards No, I’m sorry, I don’t seem to have your name here Did you make the booking by telephone? B: No, I did it on the internet A: OK, let me just have another look Oh yes, I can see it now Mr Edwards A double room B: Yes, that’s right A: Hello Have you got your ticket? B: Yes, here it is A: Thank you And your passport? B: Er, yes, I think it’s here … Er, no, it’s not in my bag Oh I think maybe I’ve left it at home Er, I’ve got my student card … A: I’m sorry, I can’t accept that A: Good morning Is everything OK for you? B: Well, no, actually The room was cold overnight and the shower doesn’t work properly The water’s either too hot or too cold A: Oh I’m sorry about that I’ll get someone to look at the heating and the shower right now and if we can’t fix them, we’ll find a different room for you B: OK Thanks A: Oh I’m cold! B: Yeah, but it’s ten thirty now, so it should be here soon I can’t wait to get to London A: Yes Hang on a minute; that’s not our train over there, is it? Lots of people are getting on B: Let me just check the board Oh, no, it is our train Come on, we need to run! A: We just need to look inside your bag, sir Could you open it for us? B: There Is there a problem? A: We just need to … ah, here it is B: Oh sorry, I forgot about that It’s just a bottle of water A: Yes, but you can’t take that through, I’m afraid I’ll have to take it off you B: OK No problem A: There Everything else is fine Have a good flight B: Thanks Photocopiable © Pearson Education Limited 2019 STUDENT’S BOOK AUDIOSCRIPTS 8.4 Security officers in Scotland found a young cat in a woman’s handbag No one noticed the cat when she got on the flight in Greece! One airline offers passengers the chance to travel from New York to Abu Dhabi inside their own three-room apartment They have comfortable sofas and they also get delicious meals Some airlines in the US have rules saying that passengers must keep their shoes on during the flight Maybe they’re worried about the smell if passengers take their shoes off! New York’s Grand Central Station is one of the busiest train stations in the world Its forty-four platforms are on two different levels and they are all under the ground Security officers have sometimes accepted other forms of ID, such as a student card, a photo of someone’s passport on their phone or even a store card! 8.5 I = Interviewer A = Abi I: What’s it like moving to a different country? Today I’m talking to Abi, who’s moved from London to New York City Hi, Abi Welcome to New York A: Hi I: When did you move here? A: Well, my dad has lived here since the spring, when his new job started I had some exams in May, and my mum and I planned to move when I finished those, but it finally happened when school ended for the summer I’ve been here for three months now 8.6 I = Interviewer A = Abi I: Cool! Have you used the trains here? A: Yes, I use the underground trains – the subway It’s OK, but it’s difficult at the weekend There aren’t as many passengers, of course, and you have to wait a bit longer before a train comes But the strangest thing is that some trains change their route, so you get on your usual train and it goes somewhere else! That’s difficult! I: That’s true And how you like the food in New York? A: Oh it’s amazing! You can buy everything here – foods from all over the world – so you never get bored! I mean, London’s OK for that too, but this is much better! And you can find great food which doesn’t cost much, which is great! I: Have you seen any famous people yet? A: Yeah, and I find it really strange that no one here gets excited about seeing film stars I’ll say to my friends, ‘Look, there’s Zac Efron,’ and they just say, ‘Oh, yeah.’ I’ve even seen Johnny Depp – he’s my favourite actor! I don’t think it’ll ever be normal to me to see film stars just walking around 172 2ND EDITION I: So what’s your favourite thing about New York now? A: Well, I love the parks and green spaces, especially Central Park And people have been so friendly I’ve got lots of new friends – I think that’s the best thing about being here now Of course, people I know back home always talk about the shopping in New York, and it’s true that it is amazing, but that’s not so important to me I: And what are your plans for next year? A: Well, I’ve already seen most of the famous places, like the Statue of Liberty My friends say that in the summer there are lots of music events in the parks That’s definitely something I want to My mum and dad also want to go to all the museums, but I’m not so keen on that idea I: Thanks for talking to us, Abi! 8.7 Tom The first thing I always have with me is my phone I never go anywhere without it It means I can call my family if I need to and I can get online to chat to my friends If I’m going to a new city, the second thing I take with me is a guidebook It’s the best way to find interesting things to I know you can get information online, but I prefer a book The final thing is paper for drawing I love drawing, and it helps me keep a record of the interesting things I’ve seen Evie What I always take away with me? Well, the first thing is my camera I know everyone takes photos on their phone, but you can take much better photos with a camera If I’m travelling on my own – on a school trip, for example – the second thing I take is a photo of my brothers I’ve got a really funny one which always makes me smile, even if I’m not having a great time And the final thing I take, if I’m going on a longer trip, is a diary It’s a great way to keep a record of things I’ve done and places I’ve seen It’s really useful when I get home and everyone asks me, ‘What did you do?’ 8.8 and 8.9 A: So, we have to think about the best present for the boy Shall we start with the camera? What you think about that? B: Well, I know that some people have a camera, but I think most people prefer to use their phone to take photos, so I don’t think it’s a useful present for most people A: Yes, I agree with you And I think your phone is better because you always have it with you, so you can show your photos to your friends, too I think a photo of his class might be a nice present because it will help him remember all his friends B: Yes, that’s true, but you think a photo like that is a bit too formal? What about the T-shirt? All his friends can sign it and write messages or draw funny pictures I think it’s a more personal present A2+ A: Yes, you’re right And it’s more fun, too B: Yes What you think about the backpack? Do you think that’s a good idea? A: Well, a backpack is very useful – I’m sure he’ll use it a lot So that’s a possibility And I also think a guidebook would be a good present because he can read about the place he’s going to and learn about which places to visit, the best cafés – things like that B: Yes, I agree And his friends could sign it, too, to make it more personal A: That’s a good idea I’m not sure about the diary Diaries aren’t very popular now, are they? B: No, I agree Most people don’t use diaries, so I don’t think that’s a very good present The book of photos of his home city might be nice because he can show it to his new friends to talk about his old home A: Yes So, we’ve talked about all the presents now Shall we decide on the best one? B: OK Well, I would choose either the book of photos of his city or the T-shirt A: OK And my choice would be the T-shirt or the backpack B: Well, we both think the T-shirt is a good idea, so shall we choose that? A: Yes, I’m happy with that Let’s choose that one 8.10 and 8.11 I don’t want to share a room, so I’d prefer a single room I think our train leaves from platform three, so we need to go over the bridge Oh no! My phone’s out of battery and I haven’t brought my phone charger with me! If you’re going into town and back again on the bus, it’s cheaper to buy a return ticket When I’m on a train, I always listen to music through earphones so no one else can hear it Don’t wait until you get there to find a hotel Go online, look for a hotel you like and make a reservation – online or by phone 9.1 and 9.2 A: When I’m bored, I watch TV or play video games B: When I feel bored, I normally just find a corner to sit in and I read a book C: If it’s wet during the school break, me and my friends hang around in the dining halls D: When it rains, I usually go to the library and study, but if the weather’s nice, I go out and play with my friends E: If I have no homework after school today, I will go out with my friends for a pizza F: If I have free time after school today, I will play computer games with my friends G: If the weather is good this weekend, I will take my dog for a walk with my friend H: If it doesn’t rain this weekend, I will go to the local zoo with my friends Photocopiable © Pearson Education Limited 2019 STUDENT’S BOOK AUDIOSCRIPTS 9.4 Hi everyone, and thanks for inviting me I’d like to talk to you about comic conventions, or comic cons for short Now, I didn’t get into comic cons because I enjoyed reading It was my love of science fiction that got me started But comic cons are popular with kids who play computer games, draw cartoons or watch action films Comic cons have been getting more popular since the late 1990s but the first ever comic convention took place in New York in 1968 Myself, I’ve been interested in comic cons since I was fifteen For me, the best thing about comic cons is the number of superfans who dress up Imagine being in the same room as action heroes, monsters and robots! Some of these fantasy costumes take hundreds of hours to complete My most recent one was a space monster and I spent about fifty hours on it I’m getting faster, though, as the first one I made was about eighty hours in total At comic cons it’s possible to meet your favourite actors, storywriters and cartoonists all in one place! I’ll always remember getting my favourite star’s autograph Unfortunately, I didn’t have her book with me and she’d run out of photos, but she used my ticket and wrote me a lovely message If you go to a comic con, it’s important to plan your day Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes for all the walking you’ll But the most important thing you’ll definitely need is your phone charger If you have a dead battery, you’ll miss out on some brilliant photos! I want to work in the world of fantasy movies I think I’d be hopeless as an actor but a job as a make-up artist would be my dream There are other opportunities, of course, for someone who wants to be a costume designer or model-maker, for example So, I’m already looking forward to going to the next convention and I hope to see you at a comic very soon 9.5 She’s sitting between her friends and she’s wearing … oh, I’ve forgotten the word for the things you wear in the house You know, the type of shoes that are soft and comfortable? On the left of the picture, there’s a … er, I’m not sure of the word in English It’s the thing you use to put your clothes and things on when you aren’t wearing them It’s in the boy’s bedroom on his bed Er, I can’t remember the word in English but it’s something you put on the bed to keep you warm when it’s cold She’s wearing jeans but there’s a … er, what’s the word? It’s when you can see through the jeans and you need to repair them But this style is in fashion now! 173 2ND EDITION It’s hanging on the left of the photo It looks like a type of bag in the shape of an animal You can see it at the bottom of the photo Er, I don’t know the word in English but it’s something you put on the floor It’s like a carpet, but smaller 9.6 and 9.7 I’m sorry, I couldn’t hear you I was listening to music through my headphones I needed some information for my science project, so I did a search online to find what I wanted I had so many photos on social media that weren’t very good, so I decided to delete a lot of them You won’t be able to use your phone in here but if you go outside, you’ll get a signal I don’t know why but it took a long time to download the app to my computer I had my phone with me, but I couldn’t call them because my battery was dead 9.8 P = Presenter A = Anita H = Harry P: And now some news on technology If you’re a fan of social media, then this will interest you The government in the UK is worried about the number of younger people who are on social media Many social media sites say that you must be thirteen years old to join, but not everyone follows this rule A study suggests that three quarters of children aged ten to twelve already have social media accounts It’s very easy for them to join the most popular networks because all they have to is put in their date of birth No one checks if they have put in the correct year or if they’re saying they are older than they really are So, what you think? Call in and let us know Do you think we should control social media for kids under thirteen? Here’s our first caller, Anita A: Hi, yes, I’m fifteen now and I’ve been on social media for two years I think it’s a good idea to protect younger children To me, ten is too young to be going online without the parents checking what the young person is looking at The internet is a great tool but everyone needs to search safely online P: Thanks, Anita And now we have Harry Harry, what’s your opinion? H: Of course, I agree that being safe online is important, but I don’t think age limits work I mean, everyone’s different Some younger people are ready to go on social media at the age of eleven or twelve So why wait until their thirteenth birthday? I think it depends on the person Some fifteen-year-olds are less sensible than me! I’m thirteen and my parents didn’t let me join social media before So, I’ve been on the most popular sites for about six months P: Good point there, Harry Now let’s talk to Danielle, who is calling us from … A2+ 10.1 and 10.2 I = Interviewer D = Dan I: We all love celebrating festivals with family and friends With me is Dan Redfern, a festivals expert First, let’s talk about traditional festivals that go back hundreds of years Are they still important? D: Yes They’re part of our history That doesn’t mean they show us how people lived in the past, but they connect us to it They also show our culture and pass that culture on to younger people so it doesn’t die That’s why we shouldn’t change them, even if they’re old-fashioned I: And what about modern festivals, like music, film or food festivals? There are lots of these now! D: Yes, every town and city now seems to have a festival of some kind Of course, some are run just as businesses – all they think about is earning a lot for the people who organise them But more and more people enjoy them each year, so I don’t think you can say there are too many I: Let’s talk about some individual festivals Tell me about the Oulu Music Video Festival D: Yes, that’s always busy I went there to see the air guitar competition – you know, where people listen to music and act like they’re playing a guitar It was great – really funny to watch, and everyone was well behaved It’s just a shame I forgot to take my camera I: Oh dear! I’ve always wanted to see the Orange Festival at Ivrea in Italy Tell us about that D: Oh that’s amazing! There are thousands of oranges everywhere, but not for eating – for throwing at each other! There’s like a huge orange battle in the streets! It’s amazing that people don’t get hurt! I went last year, just to watch, but of course I ended up throwing a few oranges! It was certainly good fun! I: What’s your favourite festival? D: I think it’s the Hair Freezing Festival in Canada It takes place in winter, when it’s very cold People put their hair into warm water to make it wet Because it’s so cold, the water in their hair freezes and goes hard, so they can create amazing frozen hairstyles It isn’t a traditional festival and it’s extremely silly, of course, although some people are serious about it But anyone can have a go – young and old That’s why I love it I: And what about the future? Will festivals change? D: Good question Of course, the world is more international now and lots of things are changing But I think people will carry on enjoying festivals in the familiar way Of course, some big festivals are becoming quite expensive to organise, but I think they’ll still happen I: Thanks, Dan Photocopiable © Pearson Education Limited 2019 STUDENT’S BOOK AUDIOSCRIPTS 2ND EDITION A2+ 10.3 and 10.4 So, it’s only a few days until the Cooper’s Hill Cheese-rolling Festival, and we’re all looking forward to it! For those of you who don’t know, people race to roll a huge piece of cheese down a steep hill – it sounds crazy, but it’s great fun! The organisers will be out on the hill on Saturday and Sunday, getting it ready for the main event on Monday They put up gates at the top and bottom of the hill, to mark the start and finish lines for the races, and they also take away any stones they find, to make the hill safe for the races We’re expecting a lot of people to come and watch this year It’s amazing that when the festival started only about two hundred people watched it Last year there were almost four thousand people, and this year there may be as many as five thousand! If you want to get a good view of the races, you need to get there early People start arriving from about ten o’clock, ready for the start at twelve You certainly need to be there by eleven at the latest There’s a small car park in the village near the hill, and there’s also a small supermarket there, where you can buy drinks and snacks If you want to meet friends before you go to watch the events, the best place is the café The races usually take about two hours and there are plenty of laughs! At the end of the day, they announce the winners and present the prizes There’s more information on the website and if you want to join in, there are forms in the post office, so go there and add your name to the list! 174 Photocopiable © Pearson Education Limited 2019
