conducting this research paper ii ABSTRACT This study aims at investigating the reality of teaching and learning speaking activities with the English textbook for grade 11 at Nghi Xuân high school – Hà Tĩnh province, the necessity of adapting speaking tasks and suggesting some adaptions with the hope they can maximize the learner‟s involvement in oral activities In this study, quasi- experimental method was utilized to collect data, teachers' and students‟ attitudes towards adapting speaking activities in “Tieng Anh 11” and the practicality of teachers' adaptation The data in this research were collected from EFL teachers and 90 students at Nghi Xuan high school Data collection instruments are students‟ questionnaires, teachers‟ interviews and classroom observations The findings of the research indicates that a majority of EFL teachers and students encountered many difficulties from “Tieng Anh 11” such as students‟ low participation and limited vocabulary, large class-size and mixed ability, unsuitable and less communicative tasks, too difficult tasks and shortage of teachers‟ experience in teaching speaking Besides, the finding results reveal that teachers' perception on adapting “Tieng Anh 11” was positive The research also conducts a pilot teaching and gets a feasible result Hence, together with the research results, the implications and conclusion of the research Luan an Do an CHAPTER CONCLUSION 5.1 Conclusion As teachers of English at a rural school, we have faced many obstacles in developing students‟ speaking skill, and the desire of how to improve the effectiveness of speaking lessons is really the strong motivation This study aims at investigating the necessity of adapting speaking activities (in tasks of speaking lessons), finding how to adapt them and then suggesting some appropriate speaking activities for textbook “Tieng Anh 11” to help the 11th form Nghi Xuan students have more chances to practice speaking and improve their speaking ability The research has discovered the significant findings: First, the communicative activities presented in some tasks in speaking lesson in “Tieng Anh 11” are not effective because they are not varied and interesting enough to attract the students‟ concentration or some topics are not familiar to them due to the low background knowledge of rural students, generally The combination of the current speaking activities and changing ones is highly appreciated because the changing speaking activities provide the students more chances to practice speaking, help them feel more confident and interested in speaking English Therefore, to motivate students in speaking lessons, it is vitally necessary to adapt these speaking activities Secondly, the students‟ favorite speaking activities except for games are also highly appreciated by the teachers In the teachers‟ view, the activities such as discussion, role play, describing pictures, information gap, interview and co-operative learning are very profitable, easy to prepare, participated by many students in a speaking period Moreover, these activities get them not bored and make them more confident However, games are not always profitable and very time-consuming though they are very interesting and attract students‟ attention According to the findings, it can be concluded that teachers should adapt speaking activities Luan an Do an key role which can affect the success or failure of the changing speaking activities Therefore, teachers should have good preparation for pre-speaking, good organization of group or pair work They also should find chances to promote their knowledge because teaching speaking communicatively requires good communicative competence, creativity and enthusiasm on their part of themselves 5.2 Limitation of the study As the focus of the thesis is adapting speaking activities to reduce students‟ difficulties in learning English speaking lessons, it is expected that the study results will provide basic knowledge and applications not only for the author but also for other teachers and learners of English at Nong Cong high school However, the study can not avoid limitations as follows: Firstly, the research has not covered all forms of adaptation The two forms of adaptation which are applied in this minor thesis is modification and supplementation, so the suggested speaking activities may be not very varied Secondly, the researcher has not investigated and adapted all speaking activities for every unit in textbook “Tieng Anh 11” As a result, there are not many suggested speaking activities Last but least, the study is designed with small scope of subjects (only 11th form students at Nghi Xuan high school) Therefore, the evaluations of the current speaking activities are limited and incomplete 5.3 Suggested further research On the basis of the findings and the limitation of the study, it is suggested that further research be extended to: - other forms of adaptation as extension, extemporization, exploitation or restructuring to vary the changing speaking activities - speaking activities for every difficult unit in textbook “Tieng Anh 11” to suggest
