difficulties in learning English Vocabulary ―How to help students to learn vocabulary better?‖ is always a question for teachers at Nghe An Trading and Tourism Vocational College To improve vocabulary learning and teaching, two questionnaires are designed and directed to 70 students and 10 teachers The findings discuss the difficulties in teaching and learning vocabulary of both teacher and students and the methods they use to teach and learn vocabulary Simultaneously, some techniques of teaching and learning vocabulary better are recommended based on the findings of this survey iii Luan an Do an synonyms and antonyms to teach my pupils I feel that the pupil comprehend the lesson more quickly For example: when giving ―cold‖, I simply say: ―cold‖ means not ―hot‖ or I use the symbol bad # good, bike = bicycle However, we should be careful in using these synonyms and antonyms, since it is not always possible to find words of similar or opposite meanings 5.4.4 Pair and group works Group and pair works is very effective teaching strategy for teaching a foreign language, as students improve their spoken skills and overcome shyness It is also an important method to generate new ideas It maintains students ' interest as they remain focused on the task No doubt that it increases the work load for teacher as he/she has to prepare the topic very carefully in advance and remain alert during the class to provide suitable feedback at the right time 5.4.5 Role play Role play is a spontaneous conversation between two pupils who are imagining they are other pupils or imagining they are in a different situation Role play is generally used for free speaking practice The students want to have role play, they have to remember vocabulary The teacher gives puppets in stead of personality in conversation The students come to the blackboard and role play following the puppets This activity will offer opportunities for free use language Moreover, this activity makes the pupils feel confident in front of class The pupils will benefit from it when they come to secondary school 5.4.6 Using Mind-mapping Mind mapping is creative note-taking method, which eases us to remember much information (De Porter, Readon, and Nourie, 1999:175) The best mind mapping is colourful and used much pictures and symbols; usually like an art Buzan (1993:1) states that mind mapping is a powerful graphic technique, which provides a universal key to unlock the potential of brain Mind mapping technique imitates the thinking process, namely possible us to move from one topic to picture, symbol and color that will not just help the students to understand the vocabulary knowledge but also makes the students feel good, enjoyable and attract their brain which at last lead them
