dedicated to my family for their everlasting love and trust iv ABSTRACT This study focused on designing an English for Specific Purposes syllabus for nursing students at Ca Mau Medical College The aims of the study are to explore students’ needs in learning English for Specific Purposes of nursing students at Ca Mau Medical College, to select appropriate topics and tasks in an English for Specific Purposes syllabus; and find out some elements for a suggested syllabus that meet the learners’ needs and purposes of learning English for Specific Purposes The subjects for this study consist of 140 nursing students, administrators, nursing teachers and 10 nursing officers at two hospitals The data were mainly collected through questionnaires and interviews The collected data were analyzed according to statistical frequency and percentage The research findings indicated that the students’ needs in the English for Specific Purposes course are expectation of the course such as language skills, pronunciation and vocabulary, preference of topics In addition, the results from the study also revealed the tasks, and common topics needed to teach in the English for Specific Purposes course and language functions and language forms From detailed findings, some implications for designing an English for Specific Purposes syllabus were proposed Limitations of the study were pointed Luan an Do an Chapter INTRODUCTION 1.1 Rationale of the study In views of educational curriculum, ESP for students in Ca Mau medical College is a compulsory subject with its general aim as to provide students necessary linguistic knowledge that benefits them in specialist area Medical staff, in general, often use English for understanding written medical texts in English, reading English instructions for use of medical equipment and drug, comprehending some English abbreviations in patient records, working with foreign medical specialists, taking part in various international conferences on modern health care and etc Therefore, medical students are expected to learn kinds of English language that is more relevant to their specialist area in the future in order to work more efficiently in their work To some extent, nursing students whose work is to take care of patients’ health, learn the language in medicine in general, they also learn the language replicating that of their work The problem both nursing students and professional English teachers are facing is that there is little opportunity to communicate in English with others in the hospital in the city of Ca Mau Most nursing students also showed little motivation in English learning in particular, that is a reason why the job of communicating rarely held in language classroom In spite of difficulties in ESP teaching and learning in Ca Mau Medical College, there is still a need for AND training program with sound ESP course Due to the demand in foreign exporting a source of nurses to countries like Luan an Do an has been very necessary to say that ESP course is equally emphasized in their curriculum Graduated students must be equipped with work skills and basic knowledge of English for Specific Purposes so that they can use English in their job effectively As mentioned earlier, the EN program has been implemented for at least three academic years in CMMC However, there has hitherto been no official EN syllabus for instruction and the selection of content depends a lot on the ESP teacher's intuition There are various EN coursebooks available which the language teachers adopt for teaching, such as English for Nurses I (Presovska univerzita, 2006), Medicine (Longman Group Ltd., 1979), English for Nursing (Cambridge University Press, 2010), English for nurses (Ho Lien Bien, 2011) However, those available medical coursebooks are to be used for teaching Medical students at universities, who have rather high proficiency level of both professional skills and English language so the adoption for AND students in CMMC seems unrealistic As a consequence, the choosing for content of EN coursebook varies from year to year, causing an uncontrollable and inconsistent situation in teaching and learning Another noticeable issue in EN program is that only ESP teachers who make the decision without drawing on other nursing specialist’ opinions about the course content Usually from the beginning of the ESP course, the ESP teachers themselves seek for materials available in the internet, the library, etc or adopting some sections in commercial coursebooks which are believed to be
