re th t to ABSTRACT ng ep hi Moock et al (2003) did an attempt to analyze the returns to education in Vietnam by using Mincer earnings function based on the 1992–93 Vietnam Living Standards w Survey (VLSS) data In this paper, I replicate the job of Moock et al (2003) to re- n a lo estimate the returns to education by using the 2008 Vietnam Household Living d y th Standard Survey (VHLSS) and Mincerian earnings functions, but with a different ju regression method, called clustered data at household level using panel commands yi pl The study reveals that (1) an additional year of schooling associates with 8.95% ua al increasing in the average rate of return to education, comparing with only 5% in n 1992/1993 In terms of gender gap, females experience higher returns to school than va n males (11.47% vs 8.33%) This pattern is unchanged when referring to result in fu m ll 1992/1993 (6.8% vs 3.4%); (2) workers in public sector get higher rates of return to oi education than those in private sector (9.95% vs 5.59%) However, foreign sector is at nh the one has the highest rates of return among the three, 11.9%; (3) university is the best z option for schooling investment with the countries and time periods have confirmed that better educated ua al individuals earn higher wage than the less-educated ones A variety of studies have n been started with the seminal work by Mincer (1974) who was the first to derive an va n empirical formulation of earning over the lifecycle In his basic formulation, the oi squared years of experience m ll fu logarithm of earnings can be interpreted as years of schooling, years of experience and nh In Vietnam, since the Vietnam Living Standards Survey (VLSS) firstly conducted at z in 1992–93 till present, many studies have employed the VLSS data and the Mincerian z vb earnings function to examine rates of return to education in Vietnam, such as: Glewwe jm ht & Patrinos, 1998; Gallup, 2002; Moock et al., 2003; Liu, 2006; Nguyen Xuan Thanh, k 2006; Vu Trong Anh, 2008; Vu Thanh Liem, 2009; Doan & Gibson, 2010; etc The gm results are also diverse l.c om The most cite study is from Moock et al (2003), in which the authors attempt to analyze the returns to education in Vietnam by using Mincerian earnings function an Lu based on the data of VLSS 1992–93 The authors find that the estimated rates of return n va are quite How have the returns changed? Especially, in d term of gender gap, between males and females who receive higher returns to y th ju education? In term of sectoral gap, among public, private, and foreign sectors, any yi discrepancies among these three? The findings are important implications for policy pl ua al makers in directing the wage and educational policies n I would like to replicate the job of Moock et al (2003) to answer these questions va n by using the Vietnam Household Living Standard Survey (VHLSS), conducted by m ll fu General Statistic Office (GSO), in 2008 and Mincerian earnings function, but with a oi different regression method which is first time applied in this kind of estimation, called at nh Clustered data at household level using panel commands 2, instead of using a simple standard cross-sectional OLS estimator From the
