FFL: Faculty of Foreign Language AN GIANG UNIVERSITY Le Thi Thuy Huynh INTERNSHIP REPORT ID: DTA176105 ABSTRACT An internship is a significant part of the curriculum because this is a string that shortens the distance between the theories provided and the application in reality If students thus study theories without practice, they will have trouble while adapting to the world However, when students spend a short time working while studying academic subjects, they have a chance to apply the knowledge from the classroom to real-work experience They can promote professional skills and provide opportunities to get acquainted with their possible future workplaces Thus, AGU lecturers organize eight weeks for each student working in flexible and professional areas And through eight weeks of working at the EVAS center, I gained more experiences and learned more new skills useful for me And now, I would like to show some of them in this report as a reference to save In this report, I used several methods, including observing, recording by internship diary, and searching on the internet In my internship report, I divide this into three parts: the first one is the description of EVAS centers: their location, history, and activities Secondly, I share my internship activities like my missions in EVAS, my experiences, and the problems I had Finally, these are some DTA176105 Picture 17: The classroom of EVAS's kids PART II: INTERNSHIP ACTIVITIES: Here are some activities that I have been trained in, and what I have learned and improved at EVAS center I Activities at EVAS: Consulting: At the EVAS center, I had a chance to be a consultant and was trained by my instructors (Ms Tran and Ms Du) Here is the registration process that I need to follow After greeting every student who comes to the EVAS center, I will give them a quick test, but I need to ask them about their English target first Then, students must register to be tested the level of English proficiency before going to class A consultant will test students by asking simple to complex questions to know where they are Students registering for KET, PET, IELTS, and TOEIC must also take a written test on reading and writing besides the oral exam Through these tests, the consultant will ask students what time they can take a class during the week, and therefore the consultant can find a suitable class and exchange information about details of the program and the price of this course AN GIANG UNIVERSITY 19 Le Thi Thuy Huynh INTERNSHIP REPORT ID: DTA176105 During the internship, I had a chance to consulting with a few students and parents They are from EVAS STARS’ level to COMMUNICATION level In general, I ask all people coming to EVAS if they have ever studied English in another center or if they are learning English at home Then, I ask some general questions such as “what is your name?”, “how are you?”, “how old are you?”, “where are you from?”, “What colors you like?”, “what fruits you like to eat?” and many more That was EVAS STARS level At Cambridge level, I usually give them some questions like “Where you live?”, “what class are you in?”, “what you like to in your free time?”, “what sports you play?” and so on At Communication classes, I give them time to introduce themselves Then, I pick up a topic and discuss it with them I listen and help them check pronunciation and grammar as well Teaching assistant: For EVAS STARS class there must be a teacher and a teaching assistant in the classroom because children are curious, active, and often want to go outside They cannot control themselves in the whole lesson Therefore, teaching assistants play a significant role to help teachers succeed in teaching Teaching assistants have many responsibilities Teaching assistants help the teacher by checking pronunciation, guiding students to their worksheets, reminding them to keep silent and use English only in the classroom, taking attendance, collecting homework, and recording grades A typical lesson is as follows First of all, I need to discuss lessons with teachers to know what students need to study these days Secondly, I am usually in the class 15 minutes early to help students find their seats and review their previous day Next, when the teacher comes into the classroom, I remind all students to say: "Hello, teacher!" Moreover, when students cannot catch up with the lesson, I try to explain it to them again If they can still not understand, I can translate it into Vietnamese but with limitations With Twinkle Stars students, I have to lead them to the water closet or the restroom and take them back I also help teachers prepare and set up materials and information for new lessons if they need it Tutorial: A tutor is a person who helps students understand the lesson but not in the classroom When students cannot keep up with their classmates, a teacher will ask an internship employee to tutor them Tutoring activities help students to get more interactive and specific than a book or a lecture Tutorial responsibilities are reviewing previous lessons and capturing the new ones as best as possible Almost all tutorial classes are after their studying at EVAS Before that, the teacher will give tutors a list of students who need tutoring and what they need to improve Then, tutors set up the lesson plan to help students Finally, when the tutoring class finishes, tutors need to report the process to the teacher For example, I was a tutor for a communication student who was absent for a week I AN GIANG UNIVERSITY 20 Le Thi Thuy Huynh INTERNSHIP REPORT ID: DTA176105 borrowed the teacher's book Then, I noted all objects he must study and set up some speaking and listening activities As a result, he can be in class after two days In Cambridge class, I usually give students an empty sheet Then I spell the words and let them write them down That is the best way to help them remember the spelling and enhance their listening skill I also make some games to help them practice their reflexes and relieve pressure after a tiring day Besides, for EVAS STARS level, there will be an additional test for children's songs So, I usually sing along with them I use flashcards to teach and review vocabulary Taking care of students: In EVAS center, I had time to be a caretaker for some classes I need to ask teachers about students and requirements in the class Then, I report to training department and share some performance record with students’ parent I also inform them about some monthly activities or class activities Besides, I collect their feedback for EVAS If it is necessary, I will report to the manager Supporting outside activities: Besides all activities in the class, EVAS also has a lot of outside activities In this case, I will be asked to help them prepare materials Then, I am a leader to help them control students Other activities: I also ❖ Mark the score for Mini-test, Practice Test, Midterm Test and Final Test ❖ Be test examiners: Hand in the exam paper to every student and guide them to it Take back the exam paper and mark the score ❖ Prepare materials for teachers before class and make a photocopy of materials if needed ❖ Enter the paid students’ information to the center’s system to facilitate monitoring every student’s condition II Advantages, disadvantages, and solutions Advantages: Through all my activities I did in the internship, I learned about friendship, coordination, the kindness of many people, and communication skills Then, I had growth AN GIANG UNIVERSITY 21 Le Thi Thuy Huynh INTERNSHIP REPORT ID: DTA176105 with many advantages Firstly, I had a great relationship here I was guided by my coworkers The first day I came there, I was assigned as a teaching assistant for the Twinkle class by my mentor I did not know what I should in the class They told me all activities I need to there But I also made a mistake I could not keep the class silent However, my mentor did not blame me She gave me some advice and encouragement Secondly, thanks to the presentations in class, I have some tips for myself when communicating Besides, I had been trained with my instructor's love, so I felt confident and relaxed when I persuaded the customers Third, I had enhanced my English-speaking skill when I was a tutor in the communication classes I usually need to keep the balance for foreign teachers and students in the class, from that I become more flexible Finally, I had responsibility at work, respected the discipline, and coordinated well with others Disadvantages: Although knowledge is almost fully equipped at the university, taking part in the working environment still has many differences Therefore, I always try my best, try to research, learn, and absorb the enthusiastic guidance of the senior colleagues, so I have somewhat limited the errors to complete the assigned work However, the difficulties I encountered during our internship were: That was the first time I had a job, so the changes from a relaxing environment to a flexible and energetic environment were a bit tough at the time I always felt worried about my words when I communicated with my co-workers and students I was really scared that I would make some mistakes I did not know a lot about modern technology such as the printer, television, and software for office work I did not know what to when the printer ran out of ink or had a jam Neither I even knew how to scan and print a set of documents I did not have many experiences with the problem-solving that I needed when I was in my internship period, for example, how to solve complaints when a customer is angry, or how to give feedback without offending others Solutions To improve myself, I tried to use some methods like reminding myself where I am, and what I should I also found and learnt some life skills in the books and then practiced AN GIANG UNIVERSITY 22 Le Thi Thuy Huynh INTERNSHIP REPORT ID: DTA176105 them carefully In addition, when I had free time, I searched for more information about all technology that I needed to use I also tried to follow my experienced coworkers and watch how they things Then, I took advantage of opportunities to practice them For example, I asked to help my mentors find students’ information in the software and add information for them Finally, when I got in trouble, I usually asked for help from my mentor Next, I looked at what she did for that situation Then, I tried it I also read more communication skills in the book When I had time with my instructor, I asked her about some common situations that appeared and some useful solutions III What I have gained: At the end, what I have gained the most from my internship are the remarkable improvements in my four English skills: listening, reading, speaking, and writing Then, I have chances to make my skills get better Beyond four basic English skills, I have enhanced communication skills, problem-solving skills, organization and time management skills, and teamwork Moreover, I have learned how to improve my knowledge by myself I also have got more about implication gestures while I worked and communicated with foreigners Next, I have learned how to help other people politely And I have known what problems I have and how to solve them Finally, I have known how to guess customers’ means I have gradually improved my skills and worked more effectively AN GIANG UNIVERSITY 23 Le Thi Thuy Huynh INTERNSHIP REPORT ID: DTA176105 PART III CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS: I Consolidation: Briefly, the internship has led to many helpful experiences for me I had the opportunity to connect with people with whom I wanted to establish relationships, and I also created new relationships with both the faculty and the staff involved in EVAS Center I was weak at managing times and anxious about that time, but the internship has helped me learn how to balance the time and work as a restrained person and make progress Thanks to working as a teaching assistant and tutor I possibly practice what I had been learning in the subject of interpretation, pragmatic, listening and speaking skill Though I had some difficulties in my workplace at first time, I could realize the prospect of employment for the interns As a result of balancing several roles, I could enhance my communication skills through my work in the center These are the reasons why I love my staying time at EVAS Center I feel that I am the best on my way Though I made some mistakes, I want that I want to be more flexible and professional I want to be there, EVAS Center I strongly believe that all the memories and skills that I have acquired throughout my internship experiences will stay with me for the rest of my life Thus, I would like to say that it is a wise decision since having internship time at EVAS Center like an academic journey Besides, the best advice I can give any student seeking an internship is that they should go for it, and EVAS is not a bad choice Not only does the experience enhance a résumé, but the experience can also provide the confidence to pursue our jobs in the future Besides, some agencies may offer a job opening for the student after graduation II Recommendations: Recommendations for EVAS center: To reduce the stress for all staff members, I hope the EVAS center can assign missions to everyone equally Besides, to help the students of the following academic years, they should create more activities like sharing tips and skill set to achieve English courses Next, getting in more outside activities is the best way to increase the interest in learning English If you cannot organize in the real environment for any reasons, you should it on the internet Recommendations for Faculty of Foreign Language: I had a great time during the internship, but I only had eight weeks to experience the working environment Therefore, it seemed to be not enough for me to be more fluent And I realize that the problem-solving skillset should be taught to students before they take an internship Moreover, I think it will be better if the FFL let language students focus on the interpretation Last but not least, If the FFL may organize some trips to some companies relating to my academic discipline for third-year students, they will choose where they should come for an internship and prepare their skills AN GIANG UNIVERSITY 24 Le Thi Thuy Huynh INTERNSHIP REPORT ID: DTA176105 REFERENCES EVAS Introduction, Training Program [online]
