requirem ents of I EC 60793-2 The fibre type shall be agreed between the custom er and supplier 4.2 Transmission requirements The transmission requirem ents of the cabled fi bres shall conform to the fam il y, detailed or product specifications of IEC 60794-2 (all parts) Particular values may be agreed between the custom er and supplier The attenuation coefficient shall be m easured in accordance with I EC 60793-1 -40 Cable elements and cable construction 5.1 General Generall y, optical cables comprise several elem ents or individual constituents, depending on the cable design which takes into account the cable application, operating environment and manufacturing processes, as well as the need to protect the fibre during handling and cabling The material(s) used for a cable element shall be selected to be com patible with the other elements in contact with it An appropriate compatibility test m ethod shall be defined in the fam il y or detail specification When the fibres are in contact with a filling com pound, the compatibility of the filling com pound with the fibre coating shall be demonstrated by testing coating stripping force stability after accelerated ageing in accordance with I EC 60794-1 -21 , m ethod E5 Alternative ageing conditions and tests m ay be agreed between the custom er and supplier Optical elem ents are cable elements containing optical fibres and are designed to be a primary functional unit of the cable core They may comprise an y of the cable elem ents described below Optical elem ents and each fibre within a cable elem ent shall be uniquel y identified as described in 5.1 Tests may be performed on cable elem ents either in uncabled form or in finished cable Unless otherwise specified, testing shall be perform ed on cable elements in a finished cable This means that testing shall be perform ed only on a finished cable if the cable elem ent manufacturing operation is done by the same manufacturer as the cabling operation Testing I EC 60794-2: 201 © I EC 201 –7– shall be perform ed on cable elem ents onl y if the cable elem ent is supplied by a third party; this does not exclude testing of the finished cable Testing of elements as defined in the applicable I EC 60794-2 series specification can be used as a guide for internal verification by a manufacturer Bu ffer The buffer consists of a suitable material applied loosely or tightl y over the coated fibre The interstices between the coated fibre and loose buffer can be filled with a suitable and easil y deformable material Dimensions and stripability requirem ents shall conform to the fam ily, detailed or product specification of IEC 60794-2 (all parts) Ru g g ed i zed fi bre el em en t Further protection can be provided to one or more fibres, buffered fibres, ribbons or pol ym eric tubes with or without strength m embers by surrounding within a single elem ent sheath of suitable material Such an elem ent m ay be called a "breakout element" or "subcable" Pol ymeric tu be If the fibres are deployed in a tube, one or m ore individual primary coated fibres or ribbons are packaged (loosel y or not) in a tube construction which can be filled or unfilled The tube may be reinforced with a com posite wall If required, the suitability of the tube shall be determined by an evaluation of its kink resistance in accordance with I EC 60794-1 -23, method G7 If used, the filling compound in the tube shall com ply with I EC 60794-1 -23, method G9 The filled tube shall compl y with I EC 60794-1 -22, m ethod F9, when tested in tube or cabled form 5 Ribbon stru ctu re If the fibres are deployed in the form of a ribbon, the ribbon structure should conform to IEC 60794-1 -31 Fibres shall be formed into units of typicall y two, four, six, eight, twelve, sixteen or twenty-four fibres each Sl otted core The slotted core is obtained by extruding a suitable m aterial with a defined number of slots, providing helical or SZ configuration along the core One or more primary coated fibres or optical elem ents such as ribbons or fibre bundles are located in each slot Stren gth an d an ti-bu ckl in g m embers I n general, the cable shall be designed with sufficient strength m em bers to m eet installation and service conditions so that the fibres are not subjected to strain in excess of limits specified in I EC 60794-1 -1 : 201 5, The strength and/or anti-buckling mem bers may be either m etallic or non-m etallic and may be located in the cable core and/or under the sheath and/or in the sheath _ Under preparati on Stag e at th e tim e of publicati
