spreading machines operated in traffic Spreaders/gritters are to be operated in such way that homogeneous distribution of spreading agents is given within the set spreading dosage, spreading width and spreading track asymmetry BS EN 15597-1:2009 EN 15597-1:2009 (E) Scope Demands on design and construction of bulk spreaders, trailer spreaders and towed spreaders with speed related spreading for winter service are determined by this document At the same time, information is given on the minimum content required for operating manuals The standard is valid for machines which are used to spread the following media: a) spreading agents with or without pre-wetted agent; b) abrasive spreading agents; c) brine The following points are not covered by this standard:  requirements for registration and approval;  requirements made by automobile manufacturers;  requirements on safety – these are dealt with in EN 13021 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for spreading machine shall be designed in such a way that handling and easy adjustment for various spreading agents under various spreading conditions (e.g different speeds) are ensured Selected dosage spreading agents Requirements on dosage are shown in Table The test method is given in Annex A Table — Requirements on dosage of spreading agents Spreading agents admitted deviation % Solid thawing unit of carrier vehicle For this mode of drive EN 15431 applies 4.4.2 Drive by hinged wheel and carrier vehicle wheel-hub drive Stationary emptying system shall be ensured by internal or external device allowing to drive the spreader with carrier vehicle stationary All the functions shall be possible as in driving operations 4.5 Design requirements 4.5.1 Spreading device The whole of the spreading device shall be designed to avoid congestion of agents during normal operation In traffic areas (excluding airport runways and taxiway) the highest point of spreading agents trajectory (the visible main flow) shall be no more than 600 mm from ground (see Figure 2) 10 BS EN 15597-1:2009 EN 15597-1:2009 (E) Dimensions in millimetres Figure — Spreading device Ground clearance between spreading disc and road surface, with fully loaded hopper, shall be minimum 300 mm (see Figure 2) The spreading device shall be designed to enable a) the connection of a trailer by the carrier vehicle, without use of the spreader; b) stationary emptying The spreader shall allow to collect spreading agent directly from the conveyor and not through disc for dosage tests operations (see Annex A) 4.5.2 Equipment for spreading agent pre-wetted A 2-inch thread shall be available for fast coupling connection for filling liquid thawing media tanks accessible from ground When the spreader is equipped with an automatic system able to shut off the external filling pump when the tanks are full, the connection shall respect the diagram shown in Annex B There shall be a level indicator legible from the filling operations (readable scale with division of at least one tenth of the maximum tank volume) Design of tank(s) and feeding pipes shall permit a filling performance of to fill complete the tanks or at least 500 l/min A warning alarm shall be activated on the control box when the minimum brine level is reached Emptying of tanks and feeding pipes shall be ensured by a valve operating from the ground Liquid overflowing shall be avoided to prevent bursting of tank and corrosion of the vehicle 4.5.3 Stationary emptying There shall be a suitable means provided to empty the hopper when spreader is stationary not through spreading disc The time to empty the full hopper shall be no more than 15 or at least 350 kg/min for big volume spreaders 11 BS EN 15597-1:2009 EN 15597-1:2009 (E) 4.6 Operation and control system 4.6.1 Operating voltage The control box shall be operated with a voltage of either (12 +−94 ) V or (24 +−12 ) V 4.6.2 Degree of protection All electric unit outside of driver’s cab shall be protected against dust and waterproofed according to EN 60529, degree of protection: IP66 (excluding lights) 4.6.3 Control related spreading The setting of spreading dosage, spreading width, and spreading track asymmetry shall be independent from driving speed The speed signal shall be according to EN 15431 It shall be possible to simulate the speed at least from 10 km/h to 60 km/h, with steps of maximum km/h, adjustable from control box The driver shall be able only to set speed related or simulated speed This function allows the use of the spreading machine independently from the carrier vehicle 4.6.4 Adjustment steps It shall be possible to change the adjustment step for spreading dosage on the control box with minimum increment of g/m² It shall be possible to set the adjustment step for spreading width and track in steps of at least 0,5 m When using pre-wetted salt, the setting of spreading dosage shown shall be in relation to the quantity of solid agent, and shall be adjustable between the three systems (see Annex C) In any case the proportion of liquid shall always be shown 4.6.5 Control box The control box has to be ergonomically placed within good reach for the driver Its demounting and remounting shall be possible without special tools and shall not take more than 30 The control box shall have a device for switching ON/OFF the complete unit, and another for switching ON/OFF spreading operation All functions for spreading operation necessary to the driver (spreading dosage [g/m²], spreading width [m], spreading track position, prewetting [ON/OFF]) shall be directly accessible on the control box All spreading parameters shall be easily readable by the driver on the control box 4.6.6 Control box alarms If close loop system is present on the spreader, the control box shall have the following alarms: a) in case of breakdown of conveyor, spreading disc and liquid pump (with pre-wetted option), or deviations from setted values; b) the driving speed for spreading operation is too high to obtain the requested spreading values 12 BS EN 15597-1:2009 EN 15597-1:2009 (E) 4.6.7 Selection of spreading agent 3 Settings for at least two different solid spreading agents with bulk density from 0,8 t/m to 1,8 t/m shall be possible 4.6.8 Data recording For necessary data recording EN 15430-1 applies 4.6.9 Emergency operation In case of control box breakdown during winter service, it shall be possible to continue spreading operations, adjusting manually without tools: a) ON-OFF spreading operation; b) start-stop auxiliary engine (when present); c) spreading dosage (solid or/and liquid when present); d) spreading width; e) spreading track asymmetry The necessary setting values of the operating controls shall be described in the operating manual 4.6.10 Spreading in specific areas A blast system shall be present to be used in specific areas, when in use it shall increase the dosage values in an adjustable way This switch shall not be self-locking, once engaged, or in case of self-locking there shall be a warning signal Operating manual The operating manual shall respect EN 13021 and shall also describe the way to check the parameters of the spreader for seasonal test The operating manual shall be supplied together with the machine Its content shall deal with: a) specifications; b) description of function; c) field of application shown in Tables 1, and 3; d) description of settings; e) function test; f) repair and maintenance 13 BS EN 15597-1:2009 EN 15597-1:2009 (E) ANNEX A (normative) Static test method to check spreading dosage performances A.1 Short description The technique applies for checking the accuracy of set spreading dosage (in g/m²) of spreading agents brought out with a spreading machine (gritter) In case of various and separately stocked spreading agents components, the different components shall be checked separately A.2 Applicable spreading agents Any kind of agents according to 4.6.7 A.3 Technical means for testing a) Container for spreading agent; b) chronometer; c) scales, precision: ± % of measured value, reading: ≤ 100 g A.4 Testing procedures Stationary testing: Dry-media hopper at least half full In case of spreading machines with pre-wetting equipment, dry and liquid media shall be caught in separate containers Any chute or distribution device should be removed before carrying out the test How to operate: a) set the control box with all parameters (spreading dosage, spreading width and simulated speed); b) tilt the spreading device; c) start the spreading operation; d) after s put the container under the flowing agent stream; e) catch the agent in the container for 30 s or a time to have at least 12 kg (theoretical weight); f) after this time take off the container and after stop the spreading operation; g) weight the agent in the containers; h) carry out this operation twice; 14 BS EN 15597-1:2009 EN 15597-1:2009 (E) i) calculate the average of the two tests and compare to the desired theoretical value This value shall not deviate by more than the tolerances shown in Table Each single measurement shall not deviate more than double of the tolerances shown in Table When the spreading machine is equipped with pre-wetted system, the solid and liquid agent shall be weighed separately Other testing methods are also
