incoming materials, processes and finished products Licensed Copy: Wang Bin, ISO/EXCHANGE CHINA STANDARDS, 23/04/2008 02:21, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI EN 15344:2007 (E) NOTE quality A quality management system certified to EN ISO 9001 may be a suitable guarantee of consistent recyclate The specification and the standard deviation or range of values within and between batches of material shall be agreed between the supplier and the purchaser Where a statement of recycled content, or the previous history of the material is requested, documentary evidence shall be provided, where there is no analytical method available to supply such information These records should be available to the purchaser on request Where a recyclate has been produced via a melt process, the supplier may choose to state the level of filtration applied during that process This will determine the maximum size of any non-melting contaminants present in the recyclate The statement of filtration level shall include details of the filter Recyclates which have not passed through a melt process cannot be quantified in the same way, and the supplier may state this NOTE EN 15343 describes a qualified recycling process and gives details of traceability and the assessment of recycled content Licensed Copy: Wang Bin, ISO/EXCHANGE CHINA STANDARDS, 23/04/2008 02:21, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI EN 15344:2007 (E) Annex A (normative) Method for the determination of contaminants A.1 General This annex defines a method for the determination of the contamination (non melted particles and impurities) visible in recycled polyethylene Three methods are foreseen and parties may agree on which methods will be used A.2 Principle Determination of non melted particles and impurities in 10 kg of granules extruded by a laboratory extruder and determination of the contamination by visual examination of some portions of the extruded sample A.3 Apparatus A.3.1 Method A The apparatus consists of a single-screw laboratory extruder, without filters, with a suitable head for blowmoulding of a tubular film having the following characteristics: - tube diameter: at least 70 mm - thickness: 100 µm A.3.2 Method B The apparatus consists of a single-screw laboratory extruder, without filters, with a plain head suitable to extrude a film of the following characteristics: - width: 100 mm - thickness: 200 µm to 300 µm A.3.3 Method C The apparatus consists of a single-screw laboratory extruder, without filters, with a suitable head for blowmoulding of a tubular film having the following characteristics: - tube diameter of at least 70 mm (to obtain a film of approximate width of 200 mm) - thickness of (60 ± 10 ) µm A.3.4 Device for visual examination A magnifying glass of philatelic type is suitable Licensed Copy: Wang Bin, ISO/EXCHANGE CHINA STANDARDS, 23/04/2008 02:21, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI EN 15344:2007 (E) A.4 Procedure A.4.1 Method A At least 10 kg of granules shall be extruded to obtain a film having representative characteristics The verification of the contamination shall be made with the aid of a magnifying glass on ten pieces of extruded film, having a length of m, taken at a reciprocal distance of at least 10 m The non-melted particles and visible impurities 100 µm or higher shall be considered and counted The counting of non-melted particles and impurities shall be carried out only for material intended for the manufacture of hollow bodies, (bottles and flasks) of a capacity not higher of dm NOTE The quantity of non melted particles and impurities of 100 µm or higher is an indication of the rejection rate which would be expected in the production of bottles and flasks A.4.2 Method B 10 kg of granules shall be extruded to obtain a film having representative properties The verification of the contamination shall be made with the aid of a magnifying glass on ten pieces of extruded film of m, taken at a reciprocal distance of at least 10 m The non-melted particles and visible impurities 100 µm or higher shall be considered and counted A.4.3 Method C 10 kg of granules shall be extruded to obtain a film having representative properties The verification of the contamination shall be made with the aid of a magnifying glass on five samples of film, of 20 cm x 20 cm, taken at a reciprocal distance of at least m The amount of contamination shall be expressed as the average of the values found in the five samples The non-melted particles (or gel) and visible impurities shall be considered and counted separately in two categories: 100 µm or higher (but less then 500 micron ) and 500 µm or higher A.5 Expression of results For each test method the number of the contamination found according to A.4.1, A.4.2 and A.4.3 and their dimensional classification shall be recorded For contamination which is not subject to restrictive limits and not considered by method A, method B, or method C, it is sufficient to give an indication of the quality of contamination 10 Licensed Copy: Wang Bin, ISO/EXCHANGE CHINA STANDARDS, 23/04/2008 02:21, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI EN 15344:2007 (E) A.6 Test report The test report shall contain the following information: a) reference to the present standard (EN 15344:2007) b) information for the identification of the sample; c) test results 11 Licensed Copy: Wang Bin, ISO/EXCHANGE CHINA STANDARDS, 23/04/2008 02:21, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI EN 15344:2007 (E) Annex B (normative) Test Method for the determination of bulk density B.1 Scope This test method specifies a method for determining the bulk density, i.e the mass per unit of volume of loose material (powder or granular material), that can be poured from a funnel of specific design When the method is applied to relatively coarse materials, rather variable results may be obtained, owing to the error introduced when a straightedge blade is drawn across the top of the cylinder A knowledge of bulk density is of limited value in estimating the relative fluffiness or bulk of moulding materials, unless their densities in the moulded condition are approximately the same It therefore gives a fairly good idea of stability of mixing, presence of humidity and stability between batches (consistency) Key Volume of approximately 500 ml, Diameter of hole at base 55 mm ± 0,25mm Inner height: 200 mm ± 0,2mm, Inner diameter: 113 mm ± 0,2mm, Volume: 000 ml Angle approximately 65° Diameter of hole approximately 60 mm Distance of 100 mm ± 0,5 mm Figure B.1 — Typical apparatus 12 Licensed Copy: Wang Bin, ISO/EXCHANGE CHINA STANDARDS, 23/04/2008 02:21, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI EN 15344:2007 (E) B.2 Material Powder or granular material B.3 Apparatus B.3.1 Balance, accurate to 0,1 g B.3.2 Measuring cylinder, smoothly finished inside, which shall be constructed of metal, of a capacity of 000 ml (Inner height of 200 mm and an inner diameter of 113 mm) B.3.3 Conical funnel, of the form and dimensions shown in Figure B1, of a capacity of 500 ml, internal diameter at base 55 mm, equipped with a metal trap plate for the lower orifice Diameter of orifice in trap plate 60 mm B.4 Preparation of test sample Mix the sample well before testing B.5 Procedure B.5.1 Support the funnel (B.3.3) vertically with its lower orifice 100 mm above the measuring cylinder (B.3.2) and coaxial with it Mix the sample of the powder or granular material well before testing With the lower orifice of the funnel closed by means of the trap, place 200 ml to 400 ml of the sample material in the funnel B.5.2 Open the trap quickly and allow the sample to flow into the measuring cylinder When the measuring cylinder is full, draw a straightedge blade across the top of the measuring cylinder to remove any excess of the sample Weigh the contents of the measuring cylinder to the nearest 0,1 g, using the balance (B.3.1) B.5.3 Repeat procedure B.5.1 and B.5.2 to complete at least two determinations of the sample under test B.6 Expression of results The bulk density of the material under test is given, in grams per millilitre, by the formula: m V (B.1) where m is the mass, in grams, of the contents of the measuring cylinder; V is the volume, in millilitre, of the measuring cylinder Take as the result the arithmetic mean of the results of the determinations obtained by following the procedure B.5 13 Licensed Copy: Wang Bin, ISO/EXCHANGE CHINA STANDARDS, 23/04/2008 02:21, Uncontrolled Copy, (c) BSI EN 15344:2007 (E) B.7 Test report The test report shall include the following information: a) reference to this European Standard (EN 15344:2007); b) all details necessary for complete identification of the material tested; c) individual results determined following the procedure B.5 and the arithmetic mean of the results; d) details of any deviation from the test method, as well as any incident which may have influenced the results; e) date of the test 14
