WAYS TO IMPROVE WRITING SKILL FOR ENGLISH-MAJORED STUDENTS Nguyễn Thị Xuân Mai, Nguyễn Thị Bích Chi, Nguyễn Thị Ngọc Loan* Khoa Tiếng Anh, Trường Đại học Công Nghệ TP Hồ Chí Minh (HUTECH) Supervisor: ThS Ngơ Bình Anh Khoa ABSTRACT As stated by Nunan (1999), writing is often considered to be among the most difficult skills to master for Foreign Language (FL) learners It creates thinking that can help learners form their ideas and develop their censorious thinking skills to summarize, analyze and censor (Rao, 2007) In this research, our group will show more in literature reviews about essential writing skills for English-majored students On the other hand, we aimed at observing students’ advancement in functional text writing, as well as raising their interest in dealing with writing tasks in the suitable way Keywords: Foreign Language (FL) learners, censorious thinking skills, essential writing skills, summarize, analyze, censor Introduction Writing is the specific ability which helps learners use their thoughts into words in a meaningful form and interact with the messages by their mentality Furthermore, through writing, certain things can also be achieved for the learners, such as independence, comprehensibility, fluency, and even creativity According to Harris (1993), writing is a process that happens to a period of time, especially if the writers take account the extended periods of thought that antedate beginning draft (p 100) In writing, the writers need a time to some processes inside Each writers have the different length of time As stated by Nunan (1989), writing is an extremely complicated cognitive activity in the writers are demanded to show control of a number of elements concurrently In this article, our group will mention to writing skills for students (p 36) Literature review Writing is very important because it helps students communicate better than any other types of media Students can learn how to write better by many ways such as reading, interpreting texts, practicing grammar rules in writing, and other activities As stated by Bizzaro (2003), it takes a large amount of exercise to improve at creative writing 3320 Convincing writing skills are central both in higher education and the world of work that follows That being said, it does not mean that creative writing should be viewed as an activity for an associate degree that only happens within the walls of one’s classroom (Harper, 2003b) It is recommended that lecturers should support their students' development of writing habits and preferences outside their classes at university It is good when lecturers recognize that many students don intensive amounts of writing for their our purposes: writing emails, journals, texts, internet sites, blogs Lecturers can introduce helpful methods how to write English well for major first-year students: interact with students individually; establish what students have to gain in process of learning; create safe, friendly and comfortable atmosphere in the classes so as to help students being more open and willing to cooperate in more demanding writing projects (Chapman, 2003) Therefore, the process approach of writing can be considered as a dynamic, and somewhat unpredictable, process as a whole (Tribble, 1990), in which writers can try to reformulate their ideas and frame the meanings of their messages in their work When working in group of pairs, learners will improve their writing from their partners’ instruction to develop their thinking skills Implications Could university students improve their English writing?
