Hai Anh The event : The milestone of Hoang Sa (The Paracel) On January 1st 1974, China claimed their sovereignty over the Paracel Islands of Vietnam which China called Xisha (Tay Sa) The escalation of China’s actions was carried out the days after They occupied land, built the fake stonetombs on the Paracel Islands Many armed fishing vessels and warships appeared to surround the island and chased the warships of the Republic of Vietnam On January 19th, 1974, the Republic of Vietnam’s Navy landed to keep the island but failed on account of China’s FirePower At exactly 10.25 a.m, the Republic of Vietnam’s Navy shot out to start the battle with the Chinese Navy in the Paracel Thirty minutes later, The violent naval battle was between Vietnam’s big and voluminous battle ships and China’s small but flexible ones Thirty minutes in the flame, the both sides’ships were severely damaged, lost the ability to fight, HQ-10 of the Republic of Vietnam sank The rest had to withdraw after the South Sea Fleet of the Chinese reinforcement for the enermy Since this time, the whole Paracel Island fell into China’s hand The recapture bombing plan of the Republic of Vietnam Air Force was cancelled a day later During the war in Hoang Sa, 74 soldiers of the Republic of Vietnam were killed It was January 19th 1974 that marked the end of hundreds of years of Vietnamese peaceful possession on Hoang Sa and opened a new period which has been 41 LUAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com years up to now, the period in which the Paracel Islands became a painful symbol of splitting and of justice that has not been done With several generations of Vietnam, January 19th is an unforgetable historical milestone Twenty-four years a day after the neibouring relation of friendship was established, China forcibly seized the Paracel Islands from Vietnam Since then, Hoang Sa, Gac Ma or more recently the name “Shanghai Ocean Rig 981” have become the typical phrases when refering to the enlargement ambition on the East Sea of China They hurt the aspiration for a peaceful and cooperative friendship that the first leaders of the two socialist countries (HO CHI MINH and MAO TRACH DONG) had laid the foundation Special Navy are going to march to the Paracel at Da Nang airport in January 1974 Among sixty-four martyrs sacrificed in the Johnson South Reef Skirmmish in 1988, Martyr Nguyen Van Phuong had passed the entrance examination to the Army Officers’ but he did not study, he joined the Navy to protect the Vietnamese islands He sacrificed at the age of 20 LUAN VAN CHAT LUONG luanvanchat@agmail.com Gac Ma Statue The wreath was dropped down into the sea to memorialize the martyrs 2.1.2 Group Presenter: Le Thu Huyen The event : The Johnson South Reef Skirmish of 1988 The Johnson South Reef Skirmish of 1988 was a naval battle that occured between China and Vietnam in the spratly islands on March 14th 1988 In the early months of 1988, the Chinese Navy’s soldiers occupied some reefs in the area of the Spratly islands, seized the Fiery Cross, the Cuarteron Reef, the Gaven Reef, the Hugh Reef and the Subi Reef They also intended to occupy the Johnson South Reef, the Collin Reef and the Landown Reef The Vietnamese Navy brought weapons, ammunition and kept the defense in the Pigeon Reef, the Ladd Reef and the London Reef in orfer to prevent the Chinese Navy from expanding the scope At the beginning of March 1988, China mobilized two fleets to the Spratly islands’area, which increased the number of vessels here In response, two transport ships from the Vietnamese Navy’s Brigade 125, the HQ-604 and HQ-505 were mobilized They carried nearly 100 army officers and men to Johnson South Reef, Collin Reef, and Landown Reef in the Spratly islands The HQ-605 was ordered to protect the Landown Reef on March 12th On March 13th, on the Johnson South Reef, Vietnamese troops put the Vietnamese flag on the Reef In the morning of March 14 th 1988, Chinese Navy’s warships attacked the military and civilian vessels of Vietnam They used large cannons to bombard crazily our ships and soldiers, took over the Collin Reef, the Johnson South Reef, the Landown Reef by landing armed soldiers The batlle between our troops and the enermy took place fiercely Both HQ-604 and HQ-605 were sunk The HQ-505 armed transport was ordered to prevent the Chinese troops from taking the Collin Reef Much as the forces of two sides were too unequal, the Vietnamese soldiers resisted bravely and protected the Collin Reef and the Landown Reef China has occupied the Johnson South Reef since March 16 th 1988 In the battle, Vietnam lost three ships, three people sacrificed, 11 were injured, 70 people were missing Later, China returned to Vietnam people arrested, 61 people are still missing and were considered to be martyrs LUAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com According to China, while their ships were supporting a team exploring oil, the Vietnamese Navy attacked, so the Chinese “forced to defend themselves” and they declared that they regretted capturing the Reefs in the Spratly Islands by force at the beginning of 1988 and it was a serious violation of the most basic principles of international law The Naval Battle to protect the Johnson South Reef, the Collin and Landown Reef in the Spratly islands has a great historical significance Through the war, Vietnam demonstrated that the Vietnamese people and soldiers were willing to sacrifice to protect the sacred sovereignty of Vietnamese over islands The Vietnamese Navy soldiers defended two Reefs: the Collin and Landown And the Johnson South Reef was only lost after the last soldier fell on the island The sacrifice of the soldiers were not in vain They set up a glorious military feat and wrote a bright page in the history of the Vietnamese people They are heroes and live forever in the hearts of the people However, the war reminds us to be always vigilant with the neighbouring country which has been a dangerous enemy for thousands of years and we have to build the army and the defense stronger and stronger Finally, we need to establish and accelerate a good friendship with every country in the world LUAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com 2.1.3 Group Presenter: Nguyen Hong Hoa The event : Shanghai Ocean Rig 981 One of the most noticeable issues in the East Sea in 2014 was that the Shanghai Ocean Rig 981 of China placed in the exclusive economic zone and continental shelf of Vietnam This was not only about the tension between China and Vietnam but also a problem which related to the whole world On May 1st 2014, Chinese National Offshore Oil Corporation moved its $ billion Haiyang Shiyou 981 Oil Rig to a location 17 nautical miles from Triton Island, the southwestern-most island of the Paracel Islands However, they LUAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com didn’t have intention of moving the oil rig out of the zone which is considered as the legal territory of Vietnam despite the opposition from Vietnam and other countries all over the world In fact, Chinese vessels chased, rammed and sprayed Vietnamese ones, which made the Vietnamese fishers as well as their liners be in danger many times Yet, Chinese Government stated that all of those actions were self-defense But it was not, not including that, China still did some violent menace to the Vietnamese For instance, on May 26 th 2014 about 40 Chinese ships surrounded and immersed a Vietnamese fisherman’s fishing ship in the traditional fishing ground where is the exclusive economic zone and continental shelf of Vietnam Fortunately, 10 fisher men were all saved Besides this, China continued to prevent Vietnamese people from approaching HD-981 On July 15th 2014 China announced that the platform had completed its work and withdrew it fully one month earlier than originally announced During the strained atmostphere of the Shanghai Ocean Rig 981, Vietnamese Government did a great job so as not to be entrapped by China Vietnam didn’t resort to violence to confront with China and was flexible with broad foreign policy on the basis of respect for Independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the countries in the world (including China) And Vietnam has been keen on dialogues with China to solve the situation in the East Sea “Vietnam demand China to withdraw the Oil Rig Haiyang 981 and all of its ships and aircrafts from Vietnam’s waters and not to repeat similar actions,” Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokeman Le Hai Binh said at a Press Briefing on May 15th 2015 On May 31st Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung appealed “ a stronger voice” from the U.S against China after clashes between coast guard vessels near the rig placed in contested waters of Vietnam On the other hand, Vietnamese citizens showed their patriotism through the songs and the Internet They proved the wrong-doings of China when their country were in dead –lock Especially, the soldiers who work and live on the islands have protected the country day and night in spite of the hardship Another important factor which made China withdraw the oil rig is the international reactions to the Shanghai Ocean Rig 981 The Vietnamese was supported by the international friends Some made videos on Youtube to criticize Chinese Government for such violent actions Some had photographs taken with the slogans supporting Vietnam in spite of the language barrier Vietnam also had the help from the international friends such as: France, the USA, Japan .and other countries The Haiyang Shiyou 981 oil rig was a precious lesson for the Vietnamese The lesson is that we should not be bad-tempered when the enemy try to entrap us, must use our head And after the dispute, we can see the intelligence and courage of the Vietnamese since “Nothing is more than Freedom” 10 LUAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com 11 LUAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com 2.1.4 Group4 Presenter: Le Thi Thanh Tam The event : China builds new islands in the Spratlys (Changsha) opinion, China continues having a lot of unruly actions, namely, “building more new islands in the Spratlys” They are turning Reefs to airlines, huge harbours and even military fortresses A website of the Chinese military has announced the photos taken on January th 2015 showing the illegal Accretion of China on Cross Rocks in the Spratly Islands of Vietnam Currently, Beijing still maintains six sand suction dredger ships working day and night on Cross Rocks and enlarge their unruly actions on two islands : Phu Lam and Quang Hoa belonging to the Paracel of Vietnam According to some famous of Southeast Asian, Orville Schell- the Director of Research Center USChina Relations, Professor Sarao Karam Tej Sing-the Indian Buddhist society Researcher ) , China has lost their image in the international community and their actions are aggressive and reckless The unruly actions of China indicate a sneaky plot to occupy the whole East Sea for themselves These actions are being countered by every country in the world Yet, Why China hasn’t stopped doing so? The answer is the benifits China gets It is known that the East Sea has a huge reserve of oil and coal Moreover, it is an integral international point of maritime traffic Therefore, China always wants to hold their own The ambition of The East Sea Enlargement with the nine-dotted line is expressed through a 12 LUAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com series of continuous unruly actions on The East Sea, which makes the tension increase not only in the area but also all over the world In response to China’s unruly actions, On January 6th 2014, the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs handed the Chinese Ambassador in Hanoi a protest to conduct illegal activities on Cross Rocks Vietnam has shown their voice and appealed oversea friends in the important international conferences and workshops to support Vietnam and oppose China With the international law of the South China Sea and the peaceful and flexible struggle of Vietnam as well as the approval of oversea friends all over the world, we hope that The Peace will soon be reestablished in the East Sea 13 LUAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com China is illegally building new islands in Changsha Chinese ship is illegally sucking sand in Changsha 14 LUAN VAN CHAT LUONG download : add luanvanchat@agmail.com 2.2 Practice Teacher lets students to play a game: WHO IS THE WINNER?
